What's in a name?

One of the things I love about this interweb thing is the sometimes clever nicknames people give themselves in forums like these. I thought maybe it'd be fun to find out where some of these names come from.

Mine's not terribly exciting. I'm an animator / designer and have lived my life on the Mac platform only to be ridiculed by my PC pals with the name "Macboy". It stuck and I've used it ever since.

How about you?

Man, I'm trying to think of how I came up with my name....... Let's see, my first name is Bob and uh um, well Gotthewind was rejected for some reason. I only had 1 kite at the time, and it sorta rhymed so I went with it. I didn't know 1 kite wasn't enough. I will always like my Beamer in any case.

I started out as Turkey, cause I just couldn't fly and was mad at myself !:smug:

Turns out I COULD fly I just couldn't surf. I discovered this at the Montana snowkite rodeo and took on Snowbird thinking snowkiting was the Bomb !!

Not much snow around here and my biggest stoke comes on Blades. I also fly a Blade and have a Blade ATB. Combine it with Kite Runner and you have Bladerunner.

I only wish I had thought to sell them name Snowbird

Emm I think I was called a feral child once by someone (meant to be an insult) but I liked the sound of the word and then when I looked up what it meant it suited me down to the ground.

I like the sun/sky/planets/stars etc. Wanted something no one else had and I could use about every place I went so.... solar IX (9) the ninth planet in an independent orbit as I have been routinely accused of being, since pluto was a real cute cartoon that wouldn't work.... solarix.

I know I have too much thought process :) I have my own orbit?

Dax is my nickname, and I couldn't tell you how it started because I don't remember, but it was some time about 9 years ago. My real name is Matt.

The name stuck and I use it as all my forum handles. It's short and easy to remember, and is rarely already chosen on forums. I used to be a local DJ and performed under that name for a few years. I do have my nickname tattoo'd on me, hahaha.

Mood: Loving the WIND right now!

[*] posted on 18-4-2008 at 04:40 PM

I don't have a good answer. I've just used Lobo for a long time on many forums.

But, I find it interesting that now that I'm getting into power kiting I view the wind differently. Always have wanted low to no wind for powered paragliding and RC ariplanes. Now, I want more wind.

And even more interesting.....go to this webpage of Lobo (not mine) and move your mouse over the trees in the lower right of the frame and see if the wind blows. Let them die down and do it again. I didn't find this till my interest in kiting. Hmmmmm! I still like the name Lobo....the gray wolf......an "old" gray wolf....ha!
