Mood: Wanting wind

What a sucker

So when I first got my Beamer, I went to a local beach and flew there a few times. One of the guys who lives along that beach came out and talked to me about kiting and showed real intrest in it. He used to wind surf but said he was too old for that now and wanted somthing he could do from land. Well we talked for a little bit and after I flew a little longer showing him how it worked, I gave him a go.

I went to that beach again yesterday and flew my Ace. As I was setting up he came out and told me to pack it up because there wasnt even enough wind to get his little 3m up :o Yup you guessed it. After flying my Beamer, he went out and bought one too. I feel really good about getting another person into this sport.

Well anyway, we talked for a bit and he said there was no way that "my big ass kite" was gonna fly if the Beamer couldnt. I looked at him and said "Well lets give it a go."

I pulled the handles and she floated right up no problems :P

Guess what? He naw wants a bigger kite for low wind days.

Looks like we got another sucker, I mean kiter, around here! :D

That is so odd my 5m ace will not fly in ANYTHING less than 20Km/h (ahhh 12 mph) I have a hole handful of others kites that fly in less than that! (all my de-powers!) in fact almost everything (beamer tsr mark1 3.5) odd that now in 17mph it is bloody scary to park at 12 as a tiny gust and I am 10 feet off the ground. Reminds me of a friend's 'widowmaker' I almost never use it, too much lift for me and my buggy. I should tinker with the bridles (again) but I have to do that on the beach and well I'd rather fly something else... :frog:

@ kitedemon...

That sounds like it's totally powered up, so much so that it has a tiny wind window and won't fly until it has tons of wind, if I have you right! Very strange...

I've got one of the original june 2007 Aces, it's a year old and has over 200 hours on it. I modded it with a basic angle of attack adjustment, played with that for about 20 hours, I've since restored it to stock AoA overall, extended the tips by 6 cm, depowered the tips by five degrees, taken out a couple of the c row bridles near the tips to further depower the tips, and finally removed the center six brake bridles. It flies in less wind than my B IV 6.5 on the low lift setting (third knot), though nowhere near as stable at the edges and the zenith, but fine anywhere else in the window. I fly it on second-gen pansh lines and stock handles, and that's the way it was rigged for the video. 12 mph and I've got a full wind window, full control, easy reverse relaunches, scuds, and I'm jumping a couple feet whenever I want.

From what you say it sounds like we have two totally different kites. I know pansh is inconsistent, but what you're describing sounds totally mental! (Not you, the kite!!!!!!!!:o)

If I had a kite like what you describe, I would hate pansh!

My Ace has stretchy bridles, not static. Maybe they've stretched out enough to depower the kite enough to fly well in low winds, but I don't think so.

I wish there was someway we could compare kites, but nova scotia is a heck of a long way from BC.

Sure is! I think there is less than 3 hours on it. It lives on a shelf in the basement and if I figure purchase price by time used it is many times my most expensive kite that is including the new NPW I got (not that that was much $$) last week it have 7 hours on it now. I am not a fan of them a friend ordered one at almost the same time (july 07) and his is totally different feel. I emailed them but.... I am still waiting for the response. I figured it would be a fast kite but can you say slow... It is my worst low wind kite, slowest and the most lift (maybe I had a 9m Fone std) I fiddled the AOA (from racekites) and found it to be really odd then something still wasn't right. I passed it to a friend who someday might get around to tinkering the bridles I personally can't be bothered I need to be outside to lay it out so I can see it and well I'll fly something else rather than sit and mess with it. Everything is stretchy on it it feels like the canopy will stretch in addition to being ahhh almost sticky. It is black and white but by the time you can launch it (dead down wind or forget about it) it looks sand coloured and it might fall off in flying if you can stay on your feel long enough that is...

Thats weird kd. I dont have alot of flying experience but believe my bridals are all stock and its an older Ace (bought it used). I loved it at the beach the other day. I think I will only fly it there now as I have flown it inland also and it was very sluggish and not very responsive but that the beach it was a whole different game. Inland I was flying in maybe 5-7 mph so it was plenty of wind just not very clean wind. Where are you flying yours?

@ _____: hope you don't mind the hijack, but we're all interested in the same kite, so... It's good fun getting people into kiting, especially older folks, I think it adds years to life and make gray-haired folk feel way younger, I know I was just turning 40 and feeling it, then after some kite flying got quick and strong again real fast...

hey kitedemon -- I remember we had this discussion b4 and I didn't take you too seriously then. Sorry about that.

What you got sounds totally lousy, I know the pansh kites are inconsistent, but it sounds like you ended up getting just about the worst one they sent out. Sticky bridle lines? I've got a mix of lines in mine, mostly white with orange stripes (stretchy and smooth) and pure white (ropy and static, same as the first-gen flying line material) and yes I modded it quite a bit, but it was way more flyable than what it sounds like you have even before I started playing with it.

I'm going to be careful to mention what happened to you the next time I go online to pimp pansh, there really is no telling what exactly is going to be in that bag!!!!!!

wonder what Dakitez thinks, he's had to repackage quite a few pansh over past few months....

cheers,

furbo

Hmmm mine is all white bridles and the lines are so elastic I can pull at least 2 inches when launching. I replaced them and the handles before the first fly.
