...saw the link that WG provided....just my 2cents...if you decide to buy from there, you'll probably want to look for tires that are 4ply....more durable and longer life.

Also, there are a few PKF members that have shops that sell all kinds of buggy tires as well...

Hey Sailors,
I assemble a rim using half of a standard PL 3-pc aluminum rim and half of a Big Foot rim.
Called the PhatBoy.

You can fit the regular 4.60/4.00x8 tire
Or the 6.50/13x8 or the 22/12x8 Big Foot tire.

The 6" wide rim allows the tire to ride with a wider contact patch (more grip)
Effectively extends your axle by 4" (2" on each side)
Looks totally cool.

Right now I have rims with 12mm and 15mm bearings.
The 20mm bearing will not fit these.

PhatBoy Rear Rims - $165 each

Safen Up! Buggy On!

Is there an advantage to using a bigger tire on the back? Taller and wider?

I think you need to get with me before you go buyin wheels bro'. This bug is built to use at a min. 16" and a max. 20" tires ,fore and aft. Your max width up front is 8".I still have not made axle assy. yet. What kind of bearings are you gonna run?

I know you told me about the 8" width upfront and thats why Im askin about the size of the rears compared to the front.

No clue on bearings. I was going to get with you on what size axles you were gonna put on it and go from there on wheel/bearing choice.

kind of depends on what rims you get! If you buy buggy wheels , they are more than likely metric , that makes it harder to make axles ,cause then we have to machine parts to order. If we BUY AMERICAN ,then 5/8" S.S. roundstock will make a great axle. I'm lookin too, so don't buy nothin' till ya bounce it off me.

What do you plan on running on? I have a pair of the Nankang's on the rear end of my bug (you can see it in the gallery under kite buggy's). They work great on slightly moist sand that would normally trap a barrow tire, on grass they work the same as a barrow except they are a lot heavier. This weight can stress the frame of the buggy and tear apart the rear end because of the added torquing. The biggest problem with these tires is getting a good set - normally they come with cracking defects due to quick evacuation of the molds after injecting and then curing the tires in piles - they generally come looking like this

I was only able to use one of these tires and had to go through a serious hastle to get a replacement set - the people were nice enough to exchange them but I had to wait a about two weeks total to get the right tires. I do have one front end equiped with one of the nankangs but prefer to run on my original front end that has a turf tire on it (much lighter). The turf tires ( these are tires that are similar to the ones that silvereaglekiter posted about earlier with the knobs on them) are great - if you take them out on a dry lake they will last much longer than a barrow tire and you can put them on a barrow rim as well (they puff out in the middle a little on the treads, but they work fine).

Hey FB I'm buildin' the bug for Jason. Damn shame about the tires dude .Where did you get em'? I was thinking this bug needs a little weight, so heavy tires will be beneficial. And it 's not gonna phase the frame when I'm done with it.( the term "brick %$@%house comes to mind ) I've got another bug I'm puttin Carlisle golf cart 4 ply smooth w/ 8x7 4 on 4 rims. I'm puttin them on hubs off a golf cart front end a buddy gave me! I love recyclin:thumbup: 18x950x8

I bought the tires through tires unlimited - but it was the manufacturer Nankang that was the culprit for the condition. I was still able to use some of the tires - it all depended on the condition of the bead - whether it was warped or not - the rest of the tire took shape no problem if you could get air into them. The people at tires unlimited were good about returns - I'm curious how those carlisle tires will work - post a pick when you get them put together - thanks for the info.
