Traction is the act of being pulled by the kite, depower is the ability to reduce or increase the power being generated by a kite generally by sliding a control bar in or out on the flying lines thereby changing the angle of attack of the kite.

Not a know it all....just the answer that I have in my head.

No worries. The better question might be "What's the difference between de-power and fixed-bridle kites?"

They are both forms of "traction" kites.

Fixed bridle is the type of foil flown on handles or a simple control bar. The bridle sets the kite at a fixed angle of attack and the kite is always "on". The use of a harness is optional.

De-power kites must be flown with a harness and a special de-power control bar. Control inputs from the bar will change the angle of attack of the kite (and sometimes camber or sail shape) and with it the power output of the kite.
