Moving to Guam!

Hello all,

Just wanted to let you know that I'm moving to Guam this winter!

I still plan on running the shop from the island.

I should be there around Dec

Wow! Congratulations Joe......looks tropical. Are are you down there just for the winter or is this a permanent move? Why Guam? Do they have much of a kite surfing scene down there...........because something tells me they'll have one going come December!

Thanks!

I'm going to be working with the US Air Force. I'll be there for at least 3 years

I know there are a few kitesurfers there and I hope to improve my skills on water during my tour :wink2:

I moved to California from Guam, 23 years ago. I have never been back since.
I'd like to visit the island again sometime.
I've got 2 brothers and 2 sisters still living there.
Can't beat the warm tropical waters for sure.

elkiter - how long did you live there?

I was there from 2000 - 2002 and I really enjoyed it. The diving and hiking was fantastic...

I only lived there for less than 2 years between 1983-1985 before moving to the mainland.

nice just dont go out over the reef-----Tuman Bay @ hotel row or down by the baseball stadium should be sweet with an incoming tide......inside the reef at Cocos/Merizio should be nice as well probably better with those daily 15kt easterly trades.....................

Guam is out there but not in the middle of nowhere....that would be Diego Garcia. Saipan is a great weekend get away just 100 miles north.

Wow, to cool. I lived on Guam and Saipan for a while. My avatar is kitesurfing on Saipan back in 2002.

Get in touch with me via U2U and I'll give you the inside scoop.

Try Pago Bay or the Harbor. Also, goto Saipan. It's better for kitesurfing for sure. I've got a bunch of friends on Saipan that can hook you up. Actually some of my gear is on Saipan waiting to get used! Just look at my signature!

I don't think I would move to Guam again. To crowded and crazy for me now.

No problem. I have some e-mails for friends that can hook you up. I may even goto Saipan sometime next year.
I'm not a fan of Guam anymore. Saipan is da'place for me. It's my favorite place in the world other than Cocoa Beach.

Oh, ditch your foil kites and get some inflatable kites. Something in the 6-12ish meter range. I rode my 6 meter North quite a bit on Saipan along with a 4.9 meter Quadrifoil XL most of the time.

There is not much in the way of easiy launches. tridude suggested Tumon Bay along hotel row. I don't think it's a good spot due to the wind blowing mostly N-NE. It is blocked quite a bit. We used to windsurf there on westerly winds but never any other time. You want to hit places on the East Coast. Pago Bay (if it's safe), Yigo and some places possibly down south. Maybe even Tarague on the Air Force Base. He did make it clear that you shouldn't venture out over the reef unless you know really what you are doing. It's really crazy out there and easy to dissappear. Quite a few people dissappeared every year while surfing or SCUBA diving. My buddy on Saipan always wore a lifevest and carried a cell phone in a padded waterproof case just in case!

Congrats Davinch. This is really going to make it more difficult to do pass the toys events in the future. Now I can say I have a friend in Guam though. How cool is that? It will be cool for us to hear about your kiting changes once there. Not much in the way of snow I imagine. Lots of wind and water though. Best of luck to you.

It's consistant wind 15-18mph. I was really into windsurfing while I was there and it just wasn't quite enough to really do much windsurfing. So kitesurfing is perfect!

We just had a University of Guam reunion party here in Florida a couple months ago and I do have quite a few friends still on island. They aren't kitesurfers but...good to know peps.

If you rock climb take your gear. There are some decent rarely climbed routes if your brave enough for limestone:smilegrin:
