JIBE ho! 2009 Jekyll Island Buggy Expo

We are all set with dates for the 2nd Annual 2009 JIBE (Jekyll Island Buggy Expo). Mark you calendars now for Thursday May 7 through Saturday May 9.

For 2009 we are moving the event from September to May for the following reasons...

>No more Russian Roulette with tropical storms
>Better chance of consistent prevailing easterlies
>Still comfortable weather prior to summer extreme heat
>Early enough to to minimize beach "crowds" (Jekyll is never crowded anyway)
>Less conflict with other kite events (Wildwood, AKA)
>We couldn't wait a whole year to do this again!

We have also decided to start on a Thursday so that we have two weekdays with fewer other people on the beach. Jekyll beach is never crowded anyway and this is still pre-season, so we will have a better shot at extended distance runs. Sunday is reserved as a travel day.

Registraion will be posted in early 2009.

Well I'm ready again. I can't imagine how much more fun it would be with even fewer beachgoers, direct onshore winds, and those fantastic JI beaches.

Someday I'll get a park and ride for miles. Haven't had that in the bug yet. I have several beach trips through winter and spring, so maybe I'll score one eventually.

Great news Angus! I had a great couple days last May in Jekyll with some minus tides.

Speaking of tides...the middle of November is showing some minus tides. Anyone game?

When does this Meet/Festival/Expo warrant its own dedicated event forum. We are getting more and more users in the local (within 3-400 miles) area that are on the forum and wouldn't miss an event like this unless something serious was in their way. Add to them the buggiers in Louisiana, Texas Oklahoma and further that with some warning, will go anywhere there is a kite meet up and you have a big East Coast buggy event that gains popularity every year with the perfect conditions at Jekyll Island.

Not sure if any of the Texas/Louisiana folks will make the event. We have or own in Galveston. We celebrate Cinco de Mayo (May 5) and have been doing so for several years now.

Hmm, yeah I overlooked that. I was trying to stay far enough away from NABX and not get too near Memorial Day Weekend as well as get low tides in the afternoon. How long does the Cinco de Mayo run?

LB,

Check air fairs in to and out of Myrtle Beach and Jacksonville. Charleston is very expensive. If you get a good fair into Myrtle, Ill come pick you up and we'll head down to Jekyll. This means you have a place to stay and wont need a rental.....your call of course...........................

Texas/Louisiana will still be crying over losses to Georgia and Ole Miss so anytime in May will be fine..Im a Gator hator but thoroughly enjoyed that 51-21 thumping. Did anyone tell Less Miles the game started at 8pm?

Very, very cool...Thanks for the offer Tridude...I just might take you up on it!

I'll probably end up getting a rental car...never been to the Southeast so I'd love to do some sightseeing...but if the conditions are really good...that might have to take a back seat.

BTW, I'm going to try packing my board in my suitcase but I'm hoping there will be an extra buggy laying around (I'll pay a rental fee of course) ;)

It's a PL folding buggy...I've never broken it all the way down but that might work...don't all airlines charge extra now for golf bags?

That didn't take long.

One more thing: We have public clinics scheduled for Friday and Saturday afternnon- the idea is to put some trainers up for people to try. I could use some volunteers to take an hour or two to help preach the gospel according to Ripstop.

We will be getting a lot of publicity at the local Fedral Law Enforcement Training Center (a huge facility down here) and a lot of the folks there are the 'xtreme" type that will dig this. A lot of other press coverage is planned, too.

Let me know if you are interested.

Cinco de Mayo will be held the weekend before.

NABX conflicts with my work schedule... Was planning a buggy trip either late March or early May. So if we don't head to La Pesca or Tamiahua, we'll head that way.

Last year I got my buggy to NABX in a ski bag . It is not the P.L. fold up but an early generation Flexi. The tires came in my suitcase.
Most airlines accept ski bags ?

I booked NABX with Continental and there was no specific charge for what I described as an "oversized Golf Bag" (Mystic Gear Bag, 43x35x150 cm). Fees are $15 for the first bag and $25 for the second bag., if combined weight is under 50 lbs. If combined wieght of both bags is over 50 lbs then there is a $50 aditional charge, and $100 if over 70 lbs. Max size for any bag is 292 cm combined LxHxW. I'll pay the $100 since shipping it UPS will be slower and almost as much, and cheap hotels at NABX keeps overall cost low.

Likewise at JIBE, hotels are not expensive, so even with baggage charges if you have to fly here, it can be affordable. Micro-Suite Motels on the mainland (15 min, from the beach) ar $50 a night and beachside motels on Jekyll Isalnd can be had for $90.

Book to Jacksonville, FL (JAX) which is served by most major airlines and is only 55 min. from the beach. A little over an hour from Savannah airport if that works for you.

I stayed at the Microtel out by the interstate last time and was very impressed with the neat and clean atmosphere and especially that it was only $60 a night. An in-room Jacuzzi would be nice but I work out my tensions out on the beach.

Yo, I'm in for sure! Looking forward to seeing you guys from last year and meeting new Buds. This year I should be well kited-up for all wind conditions. My wife will provide the ever present chin music about me taking the "family" on a trip where they'll sit and watch me buggy, but like always I'll tell her "Hey! Be thankfull for an all-expenses paid beach vacation! Now get back in the kitchen and bake me a pie!!"

Fthwaaap! aaackaaaaaack-Uuungh!!

Sorry, my beautiful wife was reading this over my shoulder. I didn't know she was there.... Still going though, but probably without pie.
