3m Blade III too much for a beginner?

Hi Guys,

Im new to power kites and have ben hooked after playing with my friends Quadrifoil, 2.8. My friend suggested a Blade II 2m but they seem difficult to get hold of. Evryone seems to be selling Blade III's
Is a 3m Blade III suibtible for a beginner?
Why did they not make a 2m Blade III?

Im about 12 st (170pounds) and I plan to fly mainly in parks in and around London.

Many Thanks for any comments suggestions.

Mood: Waitin' for wind

I started with a 3.6m Beamer and it was fine starting in low winds. The Blade will probably have more power, and definitely more vertical lift than the Beamer. The size you are looking at buying should be alright for beginning, but beware - in a month you will want another one!!

As you will have read elsewhere the kite you need depends on the wind you are flying in. Just be careful because kites will whup you in too high a wind!

I think you can even go with a 4.0 to start out. As long as you are careful. Then you will have a good high wind kite as you get more expirience. The 3 m is pretty much worthless (in my opinion) once you have some expirience under your belt.

3m is OK

3M is fine for a starter for learning basics
progress later then the 3m can be for higher
wind conditions
I have seen a full grown adult lofted about 10 feet with a 3m blade at the zenith!!!
dont under estimate the potential

Fly safe

"Im about 12 st (170pounds) and I plan to fly mainly in parks in and around London"

if all you're going to do is fly it in parks, even a 3m may be too much for you on a day with wind over 10 knots. blades also have a lot of lift, from the info i've gathered, if that's what you want, fine; if you're looking for a more stable kite, try an ozone little devil, which are stable, easily available in the uk, and come in 2.1, 3, and 4.5M sizes.

i weigh in at a measly 140lbs, but my 3M kite yanks me all over the place on higher wind days, exhausting and dangerous.

my point is, if you do not intend to use it for some traction sports, maybe a smaller kite would be more appropriate, rather than getting a 3 or even 4M, yikes!

[*] posted on 11-10-2005 at 11:06 AM

i started with a 3m radsails kite and i weigh 10 stone! i think it may not be big enough for you. mine only gets interesting around 15kts+ and i weigh 2 stone less. could i recommmend a 4m? anyone, on this note is a 7m too crazy for a person around 70kg? i use for boarding and jumping. anyone got views on this?

I'd go with the 4 m blade too. It hase a slightly steeper learning curve but you will get more use out of it later.

I disagree that the 3m blade is useless. Its great when the wind is too much for a 4m. It is the only kite that hurts me.

I fly a 3m epik pig (cheap & cheerful), bought it because it was cheap while i am learning. I would recommend buying a 3m kite for startes, knowing our uk winds, you'd need some kite killers as well. I found out that in around 20mph winds, there is the chance you'll find yourself using your bottom lip as a plough... I recently had this experience, hence the need for kite killers.

Have fun, be safe.

Ah ha, cheers for that Scoopy. I was leaning back quite far, in fact i was nearly lying down. It was a sudden gust that made my feet slip and that was my balance gone, hence why i went flying.....;)

Kite landboarding, this is my main priority for now until i get some experience under my belt, then i will decide what i want to go onto next... I thought kite landboarding was understood as "kiteboarding". Hmm, as i am a total novice to this whole thing with kiting, feel kind of like a bit of a thickie, not knowing anything about terminology.
The board i have bought is a hybrid killer zombie, seems good enough, just need to go through the 'learning curve'....

my crossfire 4.0m is nice very nice kite, powerfull fast , and lots of lift,, i was very happy with it, it still one of my highwind jumping kites, but now even better is my guerilla arc, wow, talk about great kite, massive lift and hangtime also goes upwind like a rocket. so now no more walking of shame back to where i started.

too me its close to a blade , but a blade has a little edge, me and my fried were testing them out he had a 6.3 crossfire and me a 6.6m blade and my jumps were a little higher, the blade is a little faster. so i guess a little more pop , but those crossfires are powerfull regardless. the 4.0 is a nice kite. i'd say the crossfire is performance wise 80% close to a blade.
