Exposing the sport ; )

So, I run a little design company and a client job of mine (Toronto based health & fitness magazine) had a story on managing risk in extreme sport. In a hunt for suitable & complementing imagery I slipped this in to expose the world a little bit more to our fine, fine sport. Made it through edits 1, 2 and 3 - I think it's gonna print!:wee:

I would say that's not true. IMO growing the sport is a mixed blessing. Good flying spots can be hard to find and on beaches we often compete with beach goers and wildlife restrictions. I have always felt that growth is good for the retailers but poor for the average flier. Just think of your favorite flying spot on a perfect day. Now think of it with 5, 10, 20 times the amount of kiters on it. Still a favorite spot or would you start looking for another?

nice job on the piece though. My comments aren't a criticism of that or Wolfee, they are just my opinion.

Sadly the article is focused on sailing (boat sailing) but the publisher hasn't even blinked an eye at it so it looks like tomorrow morning it's going to press!

that is a fantastic picture. Nice layout with the text as well. Very well balanced. I can't do that stuff but I know when someone else does it right.

beautiful work MACBOY, you do us proud

B-ROC speaks the reality, growth impingement.... an attractive sport, attracts more to a nuisance threshold level then shuts down a spot, then nobody flies, then nobody buys..... game over.

how unfortunate, perhaps this want happen because we all will be smarter tomorrow.

that one was used for the spread photos in an article in Power Kite Magazine.
Article: Powershots by Christoph Riddell
Issue 27 - Dec07/Jan08

You can also find the series on his web site:
http://www.pbase.com/christoph_riddle/silurian_dry_lake

but as a professional photographer (or anyone for that matter) you should ask permission to use his photo - especially if it's for a publication

On a side note, I'm not implying any misuse of the image noted in this thread, just a point on courtesy and professionalism to others. I work in the design industry as well (illustration and photo retouching) and don't mind sharing my personal hobby work especially with kiting friends, but hate seeing my professional images taken and used elsewhere - that becomes a legal issue.

I hear ya and back up what you say. Image bought and paid for, full rights granted. But yes, thanks for being an up & up kinda guy. The world needs more like us. Too many out there hacking things together to save a buck and then ripping off others inadvertently in the process.

I would rather let the really interested people search out and find others who can teach them how fly safely. Instead of putting it out that the sport is easy and everyone can fly, skate, surf, doomwheel, buggy etc.

I used to do a lot of cave exploring around the world hence the name speleopower. Not many good cave explorers try to expose the world to what a great sport caving is. Those that are really interested seek out and learn. That is how I would like it to be with hardcore power kite flying.

By the way the picture is awesome. Can you post it so we can use it as a screen saver. Beautiful picture. I would also like to read the article if possible. As I get older I think more and more of injuries when I'm playing extreme sports.

Let me just add that it was frickin hot that day when the photo was taken 120 degrees with a lighting storm rolling in from the east.....with a 9m. ozone:wee:

They were taken the day before the Toyota photo shoot with zotty, steve batmen, elton, christoph and one other I'm forgetting:puzzled: and myself

Christoph has a few other shots from that day that I think are better.... a trail gold dust flying off the back wheels with the dark clouds in the backdrop

and one other that has the sun rays glowing beams from the bullet holes in the speed limit sign

If you go to dreamstime.com you'll find tons. Just search kite buggy and you'll see a pile from that photo shoot and others. I was blown away that there were even images there to begin with. Quite a bonus to be able to get the "full story" behind it. That's awesome.
