I'm not familiar with CA at all but how about starting on any football, soccer or baseball field with somewhat clean wind.

Are you looking to just fly it or are you on a board or buggy. If you are rolling you need more wind but if just static flying, any old field will do.

Get google earth on your computer, and start looking at the satellite view of your area... it wont take you too long to find some spots. For static flying you need somewhere around 100m by 100m to be comfortable. I have flown on a baseball field before, or the short side of a football field (one time I think), but the more space you have, the better.

How far away is the beach?

Hey DRW18,

I was going to recommend a google earth view as well. Look for big open areas with minimium obstructions (i.e trees, buildings, etc).

Unfortunately, I've never kited there so don't know of any spots. If you find one, please let me know. It's about a 25min drive from my house so not soo bad. Will drive for clean wind and an open area.

I recently found this nice spot in Moorpark that appears to be good from all directions (have confirmed West, East and North. Still waiting for a good south wind but should work just as well). Wasn't blowing anywhere today (desert, beach, etc but Moorpark was blowing 9mph to 17mph today). Blew from when I arrived at 1:30pm till we left 4:30pm).

Port Hueneme seems to be blowing most of the time but is blowing sideshore 95% of the time (great for kitesurfing though). Bring two cars and its a nice 2 mile downwinder, possibly further...

...and of course El Mirage is awesome but a little ways from your house.

Good luck in our search and let me know what you find!
