Amelia Island meet up
February 14-16th.
I wanted to go ahead and give everyone a chance to join us on this one. pokitetrash and I will be at Fort Clinch State Park on Amelia Island in
Florida with our families. acampbell thinks he has a pass to attend for one day. It is as north Florida as you can get on the coast. It is at exit
373 (first exit coming out of Georgia) on I-95. There are several miles of undeveloped beach that with the right winds, could make for some epic
runs. All are welcome to join us. If you look at it on the map, we will be at the pier on the north end of the island hopefully running south till
we run out of beach or into a crowd. This is the inlet where the nuclear subs come to and from their base at St. Mary's so there might be one
cruising by while we're there. Bring some onshore wind!
Edit: Exit number above has been corrected from original post.

Seems like there was some surf, but its always been cold enough when we were there that I haven't ever been in the water for a true mental picture.
We have gone on this weekend for 3 years now. It is the Atlantic so there should be something at least a longboard could work with.

Actually it's exit 373 on I-95 - exit 1 would be in Miami. OK- it's a slow Friday.
But I'm there and will try to get some of the local 'posse down there too.

I have at least one, probably two locals, each with a bug coming down. Peter will also paint the sky with some huge single line heavy lifters and
line laundry.
John is a local windsurfer refugee who took a ride in borrowed bug and got hooked. He's just copped a used PL and is looking forward to building a
quiver.

Great to have new guys in our SE buggy and board club. This is turning into something like the group of guys my dad used to go hunting and fishing
with. I think we're having more fun than they were though and we definitely get together more often these days.

the current is wicked there--7 knots or more. very bad spot to kiteboard. on down the road about 25 miles south on Hecksher (A1A) drive is Hugenot
Park. the spot for buggy's and kiteboarding. opposing wind and current gets you on the board in light air. a tidal pond for newbys who want flat
water and no chance of floatiing out to sea. we kiteboard off the tip in west winds. primo fishing spot too. admission @ 3$ per car and camping
$10-$12 per night per spot. i'll be at Hugenot if wind, but not Ft Clinch...

I'm quite sure I won't be getting in the water. Going to buggy and landboard. Great advice for those that would consider it. I'll check out Hugenot

Hugenot is an easy drive from Fernandina, so I might head down there and try it one day. Might be worth a look for sure. Is the sand hard there?
I'm working on some bigfoot tires but have midis right now.

the beach is hard up until 20 ft from the dunes. but my kite trike had no problem with it in the "soft" stuff. high tide don't work as there is no
beach. all wind directions work for a buggy but for the water, you must know what you're doing for the westerlys. hugenot is only about 15 minutes
from fernandina.

if you kiteboard at hugenot park, the best waves are on the south end of the beach by the rock jetty. that is 'officially/unofficially' reserved for
the surfers--from the rocks north 500 ft. if we see surfers there, we let them have it to themselves. no surfers then ok. also we 'voluntarily'
don't shoo up the rednots on the sandbar as requested.
we don't litter. we don't drink alcohol because the cops will come and look iin your cooler--i've seen this happen to the fishermen but never a
kiteboarder. the only rules for us is common curtesy stuff (and don't kill the birdwatchers who so richly deserve to die )
also park at the high tide line because many cars are totally lost there each year. the tide comes in quick if your new and don't knnow where to
park.
if there is wind, i will be there on sun and monday and sat if it's not valentines day.

Add Peter Boyton from St. Simons Is. He has a bug, foils and some huge single line stuff to paint the sky. Johnny says another local Laura may come
down.
Fresh from the CWS Skunk Works, I am bringing the new Coastal Kite Cam - wireless video cam for the kite bridle with receiver and recorder mounted to
the bug.

yes, you are right. The tides are about as bad as we could get. They did a reclamation on much of that beach so maybe it is wide and hopefully firm
for us to play on. We planned this one because the kids are out of school mon and tue. The tides are just what we get. At least we are gaining
beach through the afternoons.

That section of beach between the business district and the pier to the north has been reclaimed by them pumping sand up there and then grooming it
with earth moving equipment. There is a risk that it is somewhat soft though. Reclamation can make a narrow tide washed beach no matter what the
tide is which leaves you with the perpetually dry sand. We could have lots of beach but need bigfoots to roll on it. Roll those dice I guess. We'll
find a way to make the best of what we get.
