GREENBIRD will attempt record at Ivanpah

Richard Jenkins has secured at permit to try to set a land sailing speed record at Ivanpah. He plans on being there from 4 - 6 weeks and part of this time is during NABX.
I was there to witness the current record being set 10 years ago of 116 mph, it was a awesome site to see a wind powered land sailor go that fast. The people on the highway were blowing their horns as he flew by them.

GOOD LUCK RICHARD!

In the past if the winds were blowing 25 or more he would go out. He uses the middle of the lake bed so if you stay close to the shore line you will not be in the way.

It is amazing to see this beautiful machine as it make the run up the lake bed, so....... you may want to pull over and stand on the shore-line with all of us and be part of history !!

Welcome back Richard !!

Technically, Greenbird *is* a tandem ride. Richard says he's yet to meet the guy with stones enough to ride along--the back seat has no controls and you can't see forward... I suppose you can hear Richard screaming, just before things go really wrong. ;-)

Hey Sailors,
Watching the Greenbird yesterday was thrilling.
Look closely at the photo...
Instead of the traditional 2-in-back, 1-in-front wheel arrangement,
The Greenbird has 1 in front, 1 in back and the third on an outrigger.
The outrigger is on the side of the boat away from the top of the wing.

Richard has really refined the concept.

Speeds yesterday were hampered by gusty winds.
They were strong enough but very gusty and not lengthy enough.
It was 32...35...31...33...57...35... Like that.

So I heard he hit some low 100's.

Even at the distances we were from the action, it was apparent a few times that he was moving lickety-split (it's a technical term).

Safen Up! Buggy On!

Thanks for the update, Mayor. How fast do you have to be going to break the record (in the terms of lickety-split)?
I am looking forward to seeing this machine up close. I've watched the video of the Windjet numerous times when it made its 98.6 run. That was pretty awesome.
