war wounds

it was nice and windy today, so i decided to go out to the beach with the kite.

however, i was a bit unwise in my kite decition, and decided to use my 3m.

i realise now that the wind speeds mush have between 25-30 mph. back then i didnt really realise.

so i set up, as usial, and launched. immediately i was thrown to the ground, and (although i didnt fleel like it at the time, after looking at the marks on the sand) dragged along the beach around 12-14 feet (much to the ammusement of a group of kite surfers nearby).

after my fight with the gravel and sand, i got up, luckily, not injured bad. i just have grazing along the whole of my left side, shoulder, fore arm, love handles, leg.

i proceded to fly my baby, 1.45m kite.

now i dont have any killers at the moment, i thought them a bit unneccesary with a kite my size. however, now knowing the full extent i will order some asap.

does anyone have any other war wounds pics of theirs ?

if you would of had kite killers on,you would have been able to quickly let go of the kite saving yourself any injury--get yourself a wind meter until you can estimate the wind speed correctly-and finally.....when the winds are blowing that hard--just start out with something you KNOW you can handle and work your way up--sometimes the winds are 25-30 here and i break out my 1.2 prism or maybe a stylus p2--im perfectly content flying these when the winds are really strong....they pull pretty hard in those winds and give ya a little workout--yet they wont try to kill ya like your 3m did

yeah, deffinately lesson learned. i think next time winds are this strong, ill just use my little one. i know there could have been a lot worse damage done.

thanks for the advice kite jumper, i will definately get KS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K-s now and i will see how much you can get a wind meter for.

Perfect reason why you should launch off the side of the window. I hear so many people launching directly down wind. This is just asking for trouble.

Would you really call those tiny little scratches "war wounds"? Those weren't even worth taking pictures of. When I open a thread titled "war wounds" I expect to see x-rays or flesh held together by giant staples.

Separated my SIJ from my hip in the middle of a photo shoot at the beginning of the year, it was gusty conditions and we were about to pack it up as it was getting to dodgy to freestyle.

i know discussing wounds and injuries is macho and cool, but wouldnt we all be better served by discussing ways to fly safer?

IMO I like looking at the xrays and pics of wounds. It reminds me to think twice in what condtions i am flying in and it more sinks in that i should always have my pads on. talking about safety "all" the time sometimes sounds like a lecture, but throw in a xray or some stiches and its a reminder and a wake up call.

@ Kitejumper, Its nothing about mucho and cool its a reminder that flying on land has consequences as dgkid just mentioned.

I didn't think it was cool about 3 months not flying.

I've got thousands of freestyle jumps to my name, been bruised, pulled muscles and had some close calls but it goes with the territory. S&*( happens.

Like all sports if we did the same old same old all the time because it was safe, new gear would not be designed & sports would not grow.

Sorry to hear of the injury Luke, agree fully I never kite not armored up.
I hit the ground so hard once I tore the arm right of a 661 Pro suit, left a little skin on the playa that day.
The reality of this sport is sh** happens, and the more the protection the better your chances of walking away. You still have to use some brains, check your wind speed, watch wind direction changes, learn your limits and kite accordingly.
Go hard, play safe. IMHO

Bloody Kitewing ...
On the demo day I got hit by a gust and re-hurt my left shoulder and took a patch of skin about the size of my palm off my left elbow.
A few months back, I was in the carpark with the 'wing and skates and took a lot of skin off my right lower leg and right elbow. The thing that got me was - I wasn't even moving  I let the nose dip and it pushed me over backwards!

Stupidest injury to date - thinking I had shin-gaurds on while skating and sliding to a stop on my knees ... ow.

Lots of bumps and bruises, pulled muscles but that's horses for courses innit?

Can be less dangerous by using common sence. Like proper launching technique.

Was caught by a gust turning in the bug and went for an obe. Had a sore eide and 36 hours later a nice big bruise then apeared. I do not fly dngerous and am careful what I fly for teh conditions but you ca not guard from ever having accidents. We do need to be careful as bad accidents cause bans from flying and give the sport a bad name.

How about this - everybody just harden the f**k up and stop whining like a bunch of sissies. If you want to live your life without getting hurt then wrap yourself up in cotton wool and stay at home sat in front of the TV watching the rest of us enjoy life. And if people are such gutless pansies that they REALLY want to do that, fine - but keep your #@%$#! opinions to yourself, don't force your stupid rules onto the public and leave us alone!

God I'm sick of that perception, opinion, public sentiment whatever you call it ... "OMG someone hurt themselves doing XYZ let's ban it and the equipment involved" ...

One things for sure, if it wasn't for this fourm, I'd be beat to H#!!.

Some things you got to learn the hard way but by reading here and watching utube, a person can find out what just might happen because before these, I had no idea.

Kamikuza I feel the same if the statement is more so directed to the non kiters. Because I don't think anybody here is whining, it's just a place to talk about whats on our minds whith those who enjoy the sport.

There sure isn't anybody in these parts that will talk kiteing at all. I'm a loner round here. But the forum feels a need and I'll read war wounds and (dumb a) things all day.

However,,, some things are hard to talk about because you know what kind of reply's you'll get.

Yeah, not directed at Eric of course but all the #@%$#!ing couch potato soccer moms and talentless gutless office maggots who think fishing is a sport that feel the need to oppress anything that carries a risk of bodily harm :ticking:
You're a loner too huh - just me, my paraglider and a zipper or two around here as well :megan:

okay, people seem to be taking this thread not at all as how i meant it.

-i didnt put it up here to show off my injuries, i know there not at all bad.

-i didnt put it up here to whine and winge about how dangerous kiting is, i know it is dangerous, and i like the fact ( :) ) i wouldnt have started kiting if i didnt like the fact that it was dangerous. i know perfectly well that i will get injored a lot worse than those cuts in the future. ive been badly injured on my mountian bike before, and mountian biking is another typicly danjourus sport, so its not much new.

-i didnt put it up here so others could take the piss...

- i put it up because i thought people would be interested in my story, and could share stories of their own, that in turn, i and others, may find interesting.

this thread hasnt gone like that at all, and with hinesight i dont think i would have posted it up...

i also agree with kamikuza, "everybody just harden the f**k up and stop whining like a bunch of sissies."

however, i dont think that the majority of kiters on this forum that i have spoken to/with would fit into this catagory..

Did kamikuza notice I said that you can never guard against accidents happening. I am not a wimp and would not be doing this sport if I was. However as it is not the greatest known sport and some areas have banned it, I do not want anymore bans in other places. Myself and others want to take things as fr as we are able to do and this means streatching ourselves and will be overdonig it sometimes. However we should do as much as we can to make it as safe as poss and give the sport a better name. One last thing accidents will still happen even when careful and am prepared to carry on. Sorry if this seams like an attack on kamikuza but I do agree with that some people are to safty minded these days, but I am not one of them.
