soccerflyer - 8-7-2009 at 12:37 PM

Anyone wanna meet up in Sulivan's Island and show a newb how it's done?

I have a good friend, Eric, who is looking to get into the sport. This place is near to him and I told him that there are some GREAT guys on this forum that are willing to show people how to kite and let them get the their feet wet.

Anyone in the area heading there let me know!!! Thanks!!

mgatc - 8-7-2009 at 12:51 PM

I'll get some feelers out and let you know. BeamerBob made the first suggestion about being there around the 23rd of this month. Where does your friend live?

Mel

soccerflyer - 8-7-2009 at 01:25 PM

In or around Charleston. That probably isn't much help. i will find out exactly and let you know.

soccerflyer - 11-7-2009 at 08:03 PM

He lives in Mt. Pleasant.

tridude - 19-7-2009 at 12:25 PM

acampbell - 19-7-2009 at 01:56 PM

Isn't there a Folly Beach meet-up this weekend the 25th? I have it in my schedule to come up and stay Saturday night.

tridude - 19-7-2009 at 02:06 PM

Angus,

You are correct.....................I just threw the Sullivans Island thing out there.........................

soccerflyer - 20-7-2009 at 02:44 PM

Sweet! I will tell my friend. Now exactly when and where are you guys meeting up at?

Todd - 20-7-2009 at 03:46 PM

Is this is the official Folly beach thread? Tridude, I need some much needed info on where to find parking and a meeting place. BeamerBob said to look into the sky or something to that matter an arc park

Plan is to roll out of work and hit the road, probably sleep when I need it and drive some more. Saturday night will be a hotel for sure and then a slow ride home Sunday.

LAD! You in?

tridude - 20-7-2009 at 05:02 PM

when you get to the first traffic light at Folly (Center St) hang a right.....go down to 10th St and park anywhere in the grass just make sure all four wheels are off pavement and your good (no ticket) use the beach access ramp at the Violet house (cant miss it and there we will be) Ill shoot you my cell # as well.......................

tridude - 20-7-2009 at 05:04 PM

acampbell - 20-7-2009 at 05:21 PM

OK so this is not Folly Beach State Park, obviously. Will I have trouble with the kitemobile (trailer?) I'm in. Who Else?

tridude - 20-7-2009 at 05:48 PM

its just before you enter the park......this time of year the park has designated swim areas so we will be downwind of the park but plety of room for the buggys, KGBs, and water toyz.................................:lol::duh::duh:

one stop shopping thread for those of you staying over Saturday night.....................

PHREERIDER - 20-7-2009 at 06:16 PM

i'll hit this.

this sat at the park or on ..9th street? or north.

tridude - 20-7-2009 at 06:20 PM

10th St west......turn right at the light (Center St) and head down to 10th just before you get to the park.............................awesome Phree, Nate, Beamerbody Drag hittin the surf..........................AC/Pokite/Mel kickin it in the bugs

BeamerBob - 20-7-2009 at 06:27 PM

I'm in. I'm confused about the whereabouts. I drove once to a beach access that I thought was called "9th street access". It was miles away from the county park that was way down on the south end of the beach. Todd threw me under the bus a little since I told him the location would be picked by tridude and it would either be at the 9th street access or at the county park on the other end of the island. I was certain that after arriving on Folly, arcs would be flying to the north or south and visible.

So tri when you say 10th street just outside the county park, I'm not sure what you mean. Is there a third place I don't know about? What time should I plan on getting there and have the beach widening? 11-12 maybe?

Hardrock - 20-7-2009 at 06:39 PM

I'll shoot for Saturday.

Google Earth has a Street views check box under layers on the left that show 1002 all way to park if you zoom in a bit.

Might be able to pic one of those locations and pin point where Tri's talking about.

Got it covered... Thanks Angus

Got your cell #

tridude - 20-7-2009 at 07:33 PM

BB,

at the first light turn right (same turn for the park) until you hit 10th St...............you will see a violet house on your left and be just short of the park entrance.......parking along the street is free, just make sure all you wheels are off pavement....use the 10 St access ramp to the beach.........................:lol::duh::duh:

BeamerBob - 20-7-2009 at 07:36 PM

ahh, third access point. I'm all over it. This must be between the pier and the county park then, favoring just north of the park entrance.

Target time?

tridude - 20-7-2009 at 07:46 PM

11:40 am high tide 4:27 pm low............winds forecasted to pick up around noon...............at high tide enough beach to launch for the water..................... by 1/1:30 should be board and buggy time......wind guru link below......................................
http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php

tridude - 20-7-2009 at 07:49 PM

above link click spot search type Folly Beach, click search, and youre there..................1200/1230 ish?

BeamerBob - 21-7-2009 at 04:56 AM

windmapper is showing 3-8. Is windguru better for coastal winds? I'm envisioning the 12 Syn going up so I'm hoping for the higher winds. I might need to put the Phanny up for water play but the 12 will be lit up pretty good in the buggy at 18knots. We also have to try out my new inflatable doll so we need some good wind for that too. :Ange09:

tridude - 21-7-2009 at 02:06 PM

wind guru is more accurate for conditions at Folly.........................hey your pumpin and youll need a kite monkey......................................:lol::duh::duh:

winds looking sweet for land and water toyz....................:lol::duh::duh:

BeamerBob - 22-7-2009 at 04:17 AM

The water ride has priority for me. If we nail that then the Ion can come out for a pump session. Might as well see what this inflatable fad is all about. I'll have the buggy and all the kites. Now if mother nature will just come across with some wind!:bigok:

acampbell - 22-7-2009 at 04:33 AM

No kidding? What did I miss that you got an Ion? Didn't know you went to the pump side.

BeamerBob - 22-7-2009 at 05:43 AM

A local friend called me the other day and said it was collecting dust in his garage. He said if I come over for a once over with setup, it was mine for the taking. I thought about it for awhile, negotiated for him to give me cash with the deal but he was firm on his price. I'm sure it is a veiled cult trick to just get one in my hands and try to bring me from the D'arc side. I frequently don't have an assistant so it won't see much use with me. There might be a better home for it somewhere else.

acampbell - 22-7-2009 at 06:12 AM

You should be able to self launch a bow hybrid with the right ground tackle.

tridude - 22-7-2009 at 01:17 PM

Dropped some pics in the gallery in the KITESURFING (Woo Hoo!) section. Josh got some great shots of Phree working the 13 Venom in 12 to 14mph. Sorry to all those we missed with the camera today - more time riding and less time clicking.:frog:

Josh and I finally got tapped off on the water. Thanks to all for guidance and encouragement. Great group, SoFKA. Great time!:bigok:

Bbob and Tri, Thanks for the set-up.

acampbell - 26-7-2009 at 11:08 AM

Posted Pics of PHREERIDER and Josh George (mgatc's son) in gallery, under kitesurfing.

Great day. At one point I counted 5 Synergies and 1 Venom in the air at once; truly a pump-free zone. Lots of circus tricks including 2 instances of an ARC passing through another ARC's lines.

Thanks to Tridude and family for hosting.

mgatc - 26-7-2009 at 11:10 AM

Angus,

Thanks for pix of Josh. His mom tried to get some and failed miserably:lol: Appreciate your help with the kitemares. Always the student.

BeamerBob - 27-7-2009 at 05:25 AM

Saturday was one fine day of kiting. I really enjoy being with other kiters that have become great friends now. These guys are like my dads hunting buddies from a generation ago. Some buggies rolling put my back in my comfort zone after my quarter mile of drifting, starting, and sinking back down with the kiteboard. I got several starts both to the left and right, but was a little sloppy keeping the power flowing from the 12m Synergy. I'd do a big power stroke and while amazed that I was up and riding on top of the water, would slowly sink back down after some distance. I'm sure it was like when I started out in the buggy and would forget half or more of any kite skills I had known well minutes before starting to roll in the buggy. I did a water relaunch, that when Preerider later told me his technique, I realized I had done it the opposite of the correct method. I lost my board behind me once and body dragged away to get some angle and then went straight back to it. So my first attempt to get on top of the water wasn't without small successes. MGATC and son Josh are both a step ahead of me on this water stuff. I frequently looked up and saw MG riding up on top of the water. Yes, quite the growth of skills with the SoFKA guys in the past 2 years I've been around them. Then there is Phreerider. Dang, this guy has skills. He just makes it look so easy. He gets full use of his equipments abilities. We can all learn a thing or two from him about our kites and what we ride with them. Thanks tridude for being a great host and fixing us up with such a sweet spot to play with our toys.

PHREERIDER - 27-7-2009 at 06:18 AM

I would say bob's water relaunch was right on. the alternative tech i use is a quick snatch. bob did the text book like on the videos and worked beautifully and went to get the board! progress supreme indeed folks!

everyone there doing some part of the learning process

nathan downin' winders and the walk (it will pass and don't worry about it , just keep doing it)

mel and josh getting riding lines with board and kite control

bob's water starts with board and drags

coming to the "enduring part" keep doing it folks! for everyone there the next 10 hours you all will see a tremendous change.

a little guidance (something we all need) but self discovery in application is when it all starts to come together.

PHREERIDER - 27-7-2009 at 06:23 AM

wow great pics angus! how you got the kite in those shots? cool

Thanks Phree. Any kudos from you is a great reward. I always try to keep my mouth shut and my ears open around you because there is lots to learn from your experience. I always feel like the young padawan when we talk. Eager to learn, in awe of your knowledge and abilities, fearful of appearing to know as little as I do. Ego doesn't see the light of day. I'll take all the advice and correction you can muster. I agree that the next 10 hours on the water will make a big difference in confidence and ability. I can't wait to get a few more under my belt................... er um harness.

mgatc - 27-7-2009 at 09:14 PM

Huntington Beach State Park might be a good Labor day option. I'll check on it this week and if there are no prohibitions, give it a ride or two with Hardrock next week. Then I'll send the compulsory report to SoFKA.

soccerflyer - 21-8-2009 at 09:01 PM

I have a friend that will be in at Edisto this weekend. Anyone there he can hook up with? I sent him my 3M Pansh Blaze and this will be his first kite experience.

tridude - 22-8-2009 at 10:08 AM

good chance BeamerBob will be coming down as well................Kitedog, foegot to mention that boarding and buggys on the beach ar Sullis is not permitted from memorial to Labor Day but you can go out on the sandbar (its huge) at low ride and do youe thing........BB rold me his PL bug floats on those ballon tires so we could swim it out and buggy, land, and water kite board......that would be a trip. This sandbar is huge at low tide and should start to surface around 130/2 Sunday afternoon..........................

BeamerBob - 22-8-2009 at 10:29 AM

I'm plotting now to get my exit visa. I'm hoping I can pull it off and get over to Charleston to get my "top of the water" certification. Tridude and kitedog could offer me alot of knowledge to get me up and running for good.

3 of us will be at Sullivans Island it looks like but Edisto while fine for kite flying just doesn't seem to be a destination for any of us tomorrow.

kitedog - 23-8-2009 at 06:57 PM

Just got home. Man, I'm sore and my butt hurts from 11 hours on the road along with 5 hours of kiting. Thanks for turning us on to such an awesome spot! Tridude rocks! Can't wait to see the pics!

Greg

BeamerBob - 24-8-2009 at 03:54 AM

That was an awesome day. I wasn't staying up wind except in bursts but was planing comfortably and going left and right. Made one trasition, and almost made 5-6. Power management is key and I guess it will come with time. Kitedog really got it all dialed in yesterday. After a few hours he was starting to hold his line upwind and then later in the day actually walked downwind back to camp. Onward and upward from here.

Tridude your selfless attention to Kitedog and I was much appreciated. You've coaxed me along through more than one venue in kiting. Your comment yesterday about how much fun it is to kite with friends tells me why we get along so great. It is really fun to be on the beach or field with other people that have the same passion for this stuff.

PHREERIDER - 24-8-2009 at 06:07 AM

sounds like you guys are getting it done. glad the wind was on. we had wind here but it was late afternoon and evening.

just keep at it. time will deliver

don't buy another kite ........... 3/2 wetsuit!

it's coming. the water is warm til about NOV

kitedog - 24-8-2009 at 06:46 AM

Were you out at Folly, Phree? We were hoping you might show up. Bobby...you're on the cusp. A little more time out there and you'll have it dialed.

I gotta say that the conditions were near perfect yesterday. By the time we left there must have been almost 30 kites in the air (all inflatos too).

A friend that went to Ft. Walton, FL over the weekend told me it wasn't good. 5 to 10 at best. He wrote me pissing and moaning this morning. Glad I followed Tridude and the wind to Sullivan's Island.

Sullivan's Island is awesome. I highly recommend it. Thanks again Tridude. Good call on the locaton and timed just right for the perfect day.

Greg

PHREERIDER - 24-8-2009 at 07:25 AM

i was at home in HHI. but sulli's always has a couple knots more when it comes in. had a handful of sessions there at 28/29, it can be a nice size crowd there . total tubeland

most of the rotations i get into are 3/4 people but there maybe 15 trying to come in on the same break or point for tricks or big airs in close . i like taking a long leg out so i can come back on top of every body to get a clear veiw of all the riders and positions . that way if freestylers are rotating in close you can stay up out of there way and set up your own lines. to watch or drop in if you feel like switching it full on.

cool guys, maybe i can catch the next one with you guys

tridude - 24-8-2009 at 08:39 AM

That is his extensive landboarding experience translating to the water. I'm sure it felt natural to him. He also said he went toeside with sweeping powered up turns and then a powered sweeper to go back heelside. He might be new on the water but knows his kites and landboard.

OK...I thought that was going to cure the jones but it just set the hook. That was the best! Now I have to plan a return trip to Sullivan's Island. After Friday this week, I'm open. Tridude...you're the SI kite/weather guru. Pick a day!

I'm looking for someone to share the ride. Anyone? I can go 85 or 20. It's about the same difference. I'll go by myself but I'd rather have company. See you tomorrow Tridude!

I'm weak on water kites right now. The synergy is boxed up and ready to go half way round the world. Chargers are out in a few weeks though. I'm ready for my third session and some upwind (or at least not downwind) action.
