"OOBE Field Chilli Run?"

pokitetrash - 22-11-2009 at 05:59 PM

Hey SoFKA, and South Eastern wanna B's! Of course anyone is welcome!

I have an idea for a winter meet-up here in SC at OOBE field (AKA The Polo Field) here in Aiken SC. I was thinking of a January or Feb meet up where we can get together for some cold weather flying. I'll make a great big pot-o-chilli and since it will be the coldest part of the season, we can call it the "OOBE Field Chilli Run". No problem if we don't have any wind, my Chilli will guarantee plenty of wind!!

Right now I don't have a date yet as I wanted to wait to see if there's enough interest for me to try to fix a date with the owner of the polo field and coordinate around polo matches and practices.

I won't have the "club house" anymore since I sold my old motorhome but I'll bring out my cooking pots and my propane heater. Might have a new camper by then....

Any thoughts?

mgatc - 22-11-2009 at 07:12 PM

Just one thought, yes

BeamerBob - 22-11-2009 at 10:18 PM

NOW you plan a fun event like this! :ticking: Maybe I'll set up a simulcast from sunny California. You guys will definitely have some fun. I'll be thinking about you in any case.

pokitetrash - 23-11-2009 at 04:16 AM

Just waiting for you to leave town so there won't be that awkward moment during the invites.....

Actually, OOBE field won't be the same without you. At least I'll have the fond memory of you slowly ejecting over the side of your buggy, the buggy rolling over and klonking you on the head with a wheel.... Aaaaahhhh, good times....

You'll be missed Bobby!

Thanks man. It isn't called OOBE field for nothing. Glad you remember one of my most embarrassing moments!:smilegrin:

tridude - 23-11-2009 at 06:39 AM

Ill be there with extra TP and a lighter...........................:lol::duh::duh:

PHREERIDER - 23-11-2009 at 06:39 AM

i am down for it,

pokitetrash - 23-11-2009 at 06:46 AM

Cool! I'll start getting some dates together and post a few choices.

acampbell - 23-11-2009 at 06:52 AM

I'm in, pretty sure. Gotta check this field out.

kitedog - 23-11-2009 at 07:23 AM

Put me on the list.

tridude - 23-11-2009 at 09:46 PM

bic lighters in the kite bag.................................

tridude - 24-11-2009 at 08:37 AM

wheres the link from google earth on OOBE field.......................thats one big piece of real estate..................

BeamerBob - 24-11-2009 at 08:56 AM

http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=33.45465574325897~-81.8...

Bing also offers a birdeye view, but alas the field is too big to get it all in one view. Take a look if you like. I've hit 25 mph in my buggy there.

pokitetrash - 24-11-2009 at 10:52 AM

There are also some pictures of Bobby and I
buggying at OOBE Field as well as land sailing pics on my picture link. Depending on the day, you'll either get grasshoppers or sometimes horse poo in the face so either way don't run with your mouth open laughing like I do. Bad...

BeamerBob - 24-11-2009 at 11:45 AM

The grasshoppers fly behind you if you are over 12 mph! Pants rolled into the socks and a snug collar. Picture Steve Urkel and you've got it. I never had horse poo in the face. Just don't aim for the ant hills. They might not be ant hills.

pokitetrash - 3-12-2009 at 07:43 PM

OK Peeps. How about a couple dates? I talked to the field owner and no problem for us to play Jan 9, 10 or 16, 17. We can schedule 9th and 10th and use the 16th and 17th as a back up rain/no wind date. We can do Sat and/or Sunday either weekend. I will be game for playing both days if anyone wants to. There are a few good motels in the area within 15 minutes or so of the field. I'd be glad to put up a couple kiter bums at my place as well. If I get another camper by then, that will be available too.

Whatever dates you think? :wee:

pokitetrash - 5-12-2009 at 07:30 PM

Ok, so who's in for January 9th at OOBE Field Chilli Run?

1) Chris Rieke

tridude - 10-12-2009 at 07:52 PM

2)Tri
3)NFL

acampbell - 11-12-2009 at 07:05 AM

4)AC tentative but working it...

kitedog - 11-12-2009 at 07:26 AM

I'm in barring some kind of work related necessity.

pokitetrash - 11-12-2009 at 11:28 AM

Cool! Beamer Bob and I were out there a couple days ago, the wind was between 5 and Scream Like a Girl! Bobby was flying Tridude's PKD Combat 4.2 and I was on a landsailer. We had fun although we were kicking up rooster tails of water/mud/horse poo since it had been raining all the previous day.

Glad we have some takers. I'm looking forward to seeing ya'll.

Po--

acampbell - 11-12-2009 at 11:58 AM

Does horse poo taste any better than whale snot?

tridude - 1-1-2010 at 07:02 AM

Are we still a go for the 9th? Need to klean up the GI and make a few passes this weekend...................Chris, bring that extra bug if you still have it......................:yes:

pokitetrash - 2-1-2010 at 07:23 PM

Yea, still on for the 9th! I'll bring my extra bug and both BloKarts as well for those who want to try those. I guess we need to take a day-before-wind-check and make sure it's worth ya'lls trip but right now were a go. Looking forward to seeing old and new friends.

I'm up in Maryland now, went to Rehoboth Beach, DE and static flew, 40 degrees and marginal wind for the effort. Today at a local park; Blokarted because there were light poles everywhere. 5 to 35mph wind range. Got tossed over about 3 or 4 times I guess but had fun anyway.

kitedog - 2-1-2010 at 08:19 PM

I'm game if the wind is good. The wind is backwards out on the coast...lets hope for the best. From what I can tell it is going to be pretty cold next weekend. Can you post a good link for the weather at OOBE Field so we can track it?

G

pokitetrash - 3-1-2010 at 04:23 PM

I use this aviation weather site which is already set to our area: http://www.usairnet.com/cgi-bin/launch/code.cgi?submit=go&am...

Windmapper works well but I'm comfortable with this one above.

OOBE's closest airport for weather is about 15 miles away as the crow flies I guess, but it's pretty accurate for OOBE Field.

Here's the link to find the OOBE Field as well: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=s&ie=UTF8&ll=33.456293...

Here's a nearby address: 2425 Storm Branch Rd Beech Island, SC : This comes out right in front of the entrance road to the kite field. The road showing at the middle of the field on the satelite view no longer exists. (Quote from Beamer Bob from last years Aiken Meet)

The town is Beech Island, SC. , look for intersection of Pine Log Road and Storm Branch Road. Field is about a hundred yards up on Storm Branch Rd.

BeamerBob - 3-1-2010 at 06:47 PM

Maybe you guys can hook up a webcam for me or something?:Ange09:

tridude - 4-1-2010 at 04:09 PM

tridude - 5-1-2010 at 07:20 AM

calling for snow Friday am and purdy darn chilly Saturday (chilly for here) winds are looking stronger Sunday on the forecasts (windmapper, wxundergnd, pdfamily) Can anyone else do Sunday if Saturday doesnt blow?:shocked2::puzzled::o

pokitetrash - 5-1-2010 at 03:42 PM

I can do Sunday no problem. I Live here! :cool2: If it's cold, I'll make the chille hotter!

pokitetrash - 8-1-2010 at 04:28 AM

Guys, it's not looking good for this weekend. :ticking: Max wind about 8mph. Usually means a couple less at OOBE. I think we need to shoot for next weekend. Does next weekend work, or weekend after better ?

I'm still game to try for Sunday if the forecast changes though.

Here's the local weather link:

http://www.usairnet.com/cgi-bin/launch/code.cgi?submit=go&am...

tridude - 8-1-2010 at 05:43 AM

Ive got two ASTs (anti skunk tools/19m SA2 and 17m SA1.5) that work well in 8/9 mph.....................I spoke with Angus Wednesday and he also has a nice AST so let me know................................:lol::duh::duh:

pokitetrash - 8-1-2010 at 09:39 AM

Lets do it then! I'll borrow your toys. Saturday or Sunday?

pokitetrash - 8-1-2010 at 09:46 AM

Saturday is actually starting to look like 8-10mph from 1p - 4p.

tridude - 8-1-2010 at 02:00 PM

pokitetrash - 8-1-2010 at 02:07 PM

I actually laughed out loud on that one! The tide is always low there. minus 270 as I recall.

pokitetrash - 8-1-2010 at 06:00 PM

Kite Dog, looks like it's on for Saturday. Try to make it if you can. You're welcome to come fly with me on Sunday if you can't make Saturday.

I'll be out there with the Pot -O-Chilli at noon. Anyone needs to communicate, my cell is 803-645-4442.

BeamerBob, it just won't be right without you. Miss you Bro. Not in a gay way though. Although we did have a nice Bro'mance for a while!! :D

pokitetrash - 8-1-2010 at 06:20 PM

Fellas, it's gonna be chilly (around low 40's) so put your long johns on and your purses down and fly!

kitedog - 8-1-2010 at 06:45 PM

Gonna miss you guys on Saturday. Hey Don...can you and Nate make it out on Sunday?

tridude - 8-1-2010 at 06:48 PM

I just got the go ahead for Saturday......................................................Its Sat or bust for me, sorry Kitedog...............what is show time for Saturday?

pokitetrash - 8-1-2010 at 06:58 PM

Come out any time, I'll be there around 11 getting the chilli going and setting up. The wind builds some throughout the day and drops off after 4.

Kite Dog, how far are you from Aiken? I need a new semi local kite buddy. My last one was so humbled by my kiting awesomeness that he fled to Cailifonia. I need a new beeeotch!

pokitetrash - 8-1-2010 at 07:03 PM

mgatc, Phree? Wassup?

kitedog - 8-1-2010 at 07:26 PM

I'm a good three hours from Aiken. Looks like I'm going to miss all the fun. Damn! Might have to save my pass for a beach day.

PHREERIDER - 8-1-2010 at 08:41 PM

kitedog - 8-1-2010 at 08:42 PM

I think we'll be coming on Sunday. I'm going to bring a couple of newbs so have some of those releases ready. See you around noon. Hope you guys have fun tomorrow!

You guys just don't know how many strings I had to pull to get out from under this guys shadow. You mention kites in Augusta and everyone just says "kites? You know Chris? I hear he's awesome!

You guys have fun whenever you are getting together this weekend!

tridude - 9-1-2010 at 05:57 AM

showtime.......................cars packed!

PHREERIDER - 9-1-2010 at 08:17 AM

gone

pokitetrash - 9-1-2010 at 05:21 PM

Today was a good day guys! Winds 7-14 mph on and off. Wind died completely around 5 though. Several ARCS, great training for me on the 15 M Phantom. Learned alot from you guys. Thanks!!!

Angus had a chance to experience the reason why the place is called OOBE field. Got spanked and dragged cause of an equipment issue during a gust, no horse poo in the face though. You got lucky on that one Angus!! Got a friend of mine in a buggy and I think he'll do well. He's a really big guy and he was static flying first, #@%$#! slapping a 5 meter Flow and then a 5 meter Crossfire in winds that we could have buggied with it in. It was fun watching him.

Angus, Don, Chad, great day with you guys! See some others tomorrow, Kitedog and his buds.

Still have plenty of Chilli. Any one else ready for a road trip? Thanks to my wife, great chilli Babe! Good pics to post tomorrow or so.

later,

Po

BeamerBob - 9-1-2010 at 06:31 PM

I thought about you guys several times today. That's awesome so many of you got together and had some wind too. Good luck with the wind tomorrow.

What happened to Angus? Which kite got him?

acampbell - 9-1-2010 at 08:23 PM

I got yarded by the Synergy 15m. In the gusty wind the kite luffed and got a line wrapped around the bar while the kite was in the sun and I could not see what was going on (that's the story I'll stick to anyway). It started to spiral and really power up with constant kite loops so I dumped the kite on the top-hat, but the Velcro on the self landing handle (not factory stock) held on too tight so the bar would not release and flag the kite. It continued to kiteloop while I got up close and personal with the field grass while taking a Nantucket Sleigh ride down the field towards Chris. I eventually got it tamed and sorted.

Chris, thanks for being such a great host. 300 friggin' acre field, propane burner for the chili pot and lots of refreshments and snacks. Great to see everybody. I'll be back. Aiken Kite Club rocks! SoFKA rules.

PHREERIDER - 9-1-2010 at 09:22 PM

all good on the field, nice spot. def crush velvet feel on the turf, felt like carpet. the fine dead clippings have cool slick feel on the beefy bent grass turf root bed. very nice. the horses gotta nice playground .

Great to see everyone. chilli was right on. thanks Chris for the warm spot . nice ride guys!

pokitetrash - 10-1-2010 at 07:04 AM

Who had a charger there? :puzzled:

Don't think those sizes would match up properly though would they?

who do you think..................the Nav bar looked bling...........

BeamerBob - 10-1-2010 at 03:01 PM

I thought Angus was holding off for awhile. Did it get passed around or not quite enough wind for a proper test?

acampbell - 10-1-2010 at 03:29 PM

I just teased them with it. It's still new stock, a 12m in green yellow, waiting for a home. The Nav bar is a gorgeous piece of kit; got its own zipper bag - very slick. Comes with lines attached and neatly wound on the bar. 3m extensions included on winders. The chicken loop safety can be reset with one hand.

tridude - 10-1-2010 at 06:47 PM

Po,

Did anyone make it out this afternoon?

kitedog - 10-1-2010 at 06:49 PM

Me and a couple for friends from Atlanta made it to OOBE field today. It was gusty/shifty but the Pulse 2 12 mtr was in effect. The buggy was better than the board. Good seeing Chris. Sorry I missed you guys yesterday.

Greg

tridude - 10-1-2010 at 06:55 PM

nice.................yeah it took me a few minutes to get my landboard thoughts organized................its been a few months since Ive flown on land.......................the buggy runs were a rush for sure........................if Acampbells PL XR+ is still available during JIBE, I told him Id take it..............my 10m Pulse flew well yesterday and the 12m S2 scared the Charger and it stayed neatly packed away:lol::duh::lol::duh:

pokitetrash - 10-1-2010 at 07:14 PM

Yea today wasn't as good as yesterday but still I always say "a bad day of buggying is still waaaay better than a good day of work!"

Good seeing you Kitedog, and your friends as well. Always welcome anytime you want a road trip for sure.

OK, where to next?

tridude - 10-1-2010 at 07:32 PM

MGATC has a nice playground I believe
