LandBoard Comp

flash - 11-4-2010 at 06:25 PM

Well folks, myself and one of my teammates got to talking about the need for more of these type of competitions. We might even have enough riders to throw a local competition (about 10, but I am the only chica argh!) Well, a beer or two later while sitting on the playa at NABX we decided that we really want to throw a national comp. We already have preliminary sponsorship from a major landboard company and a powerkite company, possibly even a microbrewer! We also have preliminary approval on a large grass field with reliable winds.

The question is: If we set up a landboarding competition in Colorado, would anyone come to it?

Let me know, cause I would love to do this, but... I am not going to go balls to the wall on organizing if only our local folks will show up.

flyjump - 11-4-2010 at 06:49 PM

I'm in!

erratic winds - 11-4-2010 at 08:05 PM

Well, you know I'll rustle up at least 5 locals.

flash - 11-4-2010 at 08:19 PM

Flyjump - Sweet! only 20 or so more to go! Tell everyone you can cause we have a great opportunity with everything lined up, we just need the folks to show up.

Erratic... you don't count! lol. You are part of the ten local folks that I figured I would get to come. :) hahahahaha. Hell tell any colorado'n that there is beer there and they will be there. :) Want to ride soon?

erratic winds - 11-4-2010 at 08:34 PM

Nik-heck yeah I want to ride soon but I'm really in need of hip pads before I go out again! I rode hard and fell harder last week riding that flysurfer my buddy won!

PHREERIDER - 12-4-2010 at 05:21 AM

Sounds great, when?

flash - 12-4-2010 at 05:39 AM

we were thinking fall time frame. That way we are not really interfering with snowkiting or kiteboarding seasons. and it gives everyone enough time to get some riding in before hand. Then again I am open to suggestions or general consensus to change.

PHREERIDER - 12-4-2010 at 06:44 AM

in the fall the wind drops off here,(South east US) except for hurricanes

local wind is your best direction. weather history for the spot chosen is a good start.

nice to have something going in US .. i think ELI_USA , may have gotten a local comp going somewhere in the NW.. the details escape me. anyway keep us posted

flash - 12-4-2010 at 08:49 AM

I should also say for all of the budding landboarders/fliers out there, you should plan on coming. We want to have not only the pro/amatuer divisions... but we are thinking about having a 'best in show' award or something like it. Essentially this would go to the person that is the biggest crowd pleaser, not necessarily the best rider. (i.e. showing up in a chicken suit and flying gets you bonus points)

This would be a non-profit event, but to cover the cost of beer/insurance/t-shirt swag/etc... the cost is estimated at 20-25$ to register/ride. Myself and the other planner really don't want this to cost any more then that, so we would do our best to keep it below that.
For the city to give us the field (a massive soccer complex) we do need to restrict access to riders in the comp. For those of you that have never competed this doesn't mean that flying is only restricted to people competing. We just need to get waivers and restrict access to those that would be with our group. (Likewise if the brewery is donating beer we have to restrict it to our group only so we fit under some 'personal liquor at a picnic' law or whatever)

Big thing is, if I can get 20 people interested in coming that are not locals (I am going to strong arm them into coming HA! ), the event will def be on. I will keep everyone updated, I just really don't want to let this go since we have the perfect trifecta of approval/sponsorship/location, we just need riders! I even have 3 professional photographers that owe me a big favor and will be there to give you guys promo work (FOR FREE!!) if you ever wanted a sweet-ass photo of you doing your thing.

ripsessionkites - 12-4-2010 at 09:48 AM

depends on when ... im in

just bring the wind

if you need more sponsors just ask -->here<--

flash - 12-4-2010 at 10:05 AM

OOOH!!! we can always use more sponsors! :)

And I am loving all of the response so far.

If it was in the fall, what would be a good time frame sept/oct? I am thinking tentatively the third weekend in September. consensus says?

I don't think yoiu're going "balls to the wall" period. ;)

Unless there is something you want to tell us. :puzzled: :shocked2:

flash - 12-4-2010 at 10:21 AM

lol, I am often told my balls hang lower then most men. hahaha. I am all girl tho, just not a girly type.

B-roc would you come out to the comp if we throw it?! SAY YES or I might just have to show you my 'balls'. HA! j/k

B-Roc - 12-4-2010 at 10:40 AM

Only if I can compete in the ladies division so I'm guaranteed at least a 2nd place finish.

I won't be able to come. Travelling for kiting events isn't in the family budget.

Besides, even if I competed in the ladies comp, they'd probably give all the medals to you and some walk on 12 year olds - leaving me shamed for years to come. :o

I'm a much better kiter on the internet than in person. :wow:;)

acampbell - 12-4-2010 at 10:42 AM

If you need an insurance carrier, I have one that does specialized sporting events. In this case they would use the buying power of skateboard parks to keep it reasonable, same as they did for me for JIBE

flash - 12-4-2010 at 10:45 AM

acampbell can you send me some more info? mtthumper@gmail.com

PHREERIDER - 12-4-2010 at 11:16 AM

if the lady says balls one more time i'm there...

to win

carltb - 12-4-2010 at 11:28 AM

is there prize money?

flash - 12-4-2010 at 01:40 PM

PHREE - balls. Balls. BALLS!

acampbell - thanks for the info!

carltb - And ideally there would be more then a trophy for winning. I am not sure about how large the purse would be for placing. Part of that would depend on how many folks register to compete and also on the sponsors etc... Of course I will keep everyone updated on each bit of info.

to all - any suggestions on a name for this comp?

erratic winds - 12-4-2010 at 01:47 PM

There is a arizona bay joke on the tip of my tongue but I can't quite get it out

brplatz - 12-4-2010 at 06:24 PM

I think myself and a friend could be their, we are in Albuquerque, NM. Were probably not good enough to be any serious competition... but whatev!

g-force junkie - 12-4-2010 at 07:17 PM

Flash,
I'm definetly in and will try to bring as many as possible from Southern Colorado. Were you the one running registration at the Dillon Open? Also we locals should plan a trip to the Great Sand Dunes for a weekend of camping and flying.
ps. I really enjoy your enthusiasm for the sport

PHREERIDER - 12-4-2010 at 07:19 PM

DEF have to DROP IN on this party.

wouldn't want to miss FLASHBALLS air show.

nice!

flash - 12-4-2010 at 08:49 PM

I am writing this after a 40 min 'flash' session at the park riding and eating grass.

flashballs.... I love it. I might have to transfer over my vow to continue wearing a skirt while in a buggy (did for all of NABX) to wearing one while on my L.Board.

brplatz - trust me... everyone should come. I am just sad on a landboard :) I still love it tho!!

g-force - Yes I was the one running registration. (ours will be a little different) and funny you should say that, I just tried to do a Dunes trip and was skunked!! I am definitely up for some time farting around flying there. Oh and by the way colorado folks, I am running the powerkite field at the Fort Collins kite fest on may 1st, you should come bug me... might walk away with some fresh beer. (Just mention you are a PKF member) :)

UPDATE On SPONSORSHIP:

MBS has fully signed on to not only provide us with a race tent, advertising, etc... etc... but also decks and swag to hand out for raffle/winners.
HQ Powerkites might sponsor the event as the headliner, this is still under negotiations.
RipSessions has also thrown in their hat to give us some loving. :) tee hee
Into The Wind, our local kite store has made an offer to sponsor
Colorado All Board Sports is being courted for some sponsorship, they said they would if we can get riders to come to the event.

Some other buenos:
I have to double check with the brewery, but we would have at least one keg.
3 Pro photographers will be on hand to take photos. All photos of individual riders will belong to the rider to use at their discretion. (FOR FREE)
we have reached out to IKO and PASA regarding a Kite LAND boarding cert, this event might also do a double duty for anyone wanting to become a cert'd instructor. (keep your fingers crossed)

And last but not least: anyone have suggestions on a name or a graphic? I can think of a thousand things, but I really want this to be OUR comp, not just the brainchild of me and my two partners. Keep up the input etc... I am going to try and use everything you guys throw out there, but remember just like any other event, if you don't speak up and say it, we will just go with what comes to mind.

WOO! alright time to go sleep and dream of getting spanked on my board.

erratic winds - 12-4-2010 at 10:24 PM

Woah, if you could pull of IKO/PASA cert for LAND that would be insane

ripsessionkites - 12-4-2010 at 11:19 PM

as long as its not beginning of September (SOBB) or end of September (World Cup), im there

peter lynn is another good sponsor to get onboard

this might help http://www.flyboarden.nl/ (but its in dutch)

Insect00man - 13-4-2010 at 08:15 AM

 I think this is a great idea. Thank you for taking the initiative!

Have you considered creating a Facebook group for the event?

Also, it seems the Front Range would benefit from some sort of regularly scheduled power-kiting meetup.... maybe once a month. Perhaps your event could be the Genesis for that - a series of training sessions leading up to the event?

erratic winds - 13-4-2010 at 01:09 PM

insect00man-we already got scheduled meetings...... if it's blowin get to dove valley lol indicators say 23-37 MPH night now! (not me, I think i'm down another week til the hip is more healed)

flash - 13-4-2010 at 08:40 PM

I love you guys. :) and yes we kinda do have a locals meet up. There are the Dove Valley Boys for the folks in south Denver, then there is me and the one other one I am teaching up here in Longmont/Boulder.

I am going to create a facebook event as soon as we have the following:

1. A good name - 'Mile High Showdown' really doesn't do it for me... suggestions?
2. A def date - still thinking the third week of september...
3. Confirmation on the location. (this weekend we are going to go out and check out a few others just in case)

Flash!

ps. glad I didn't ride today... 15-25mph variable and gusting up to 45 at my home field. argh....

As you have a Fall timeframe for it and because it ties in with the Colorado state flag, I have been kicking around...

Drewculous - 14-4-2010 at 06:44 AM

Mile High Flap Flutter and Fly Power-Kite Festival.

erratic winds - 14-4-2010 at 11:19 AM

Note: When attending an event even as a spectator who does fly, register as a competitor. You get more stuff that way. I missed out at the Dillon Snowkite Open.

Drewculous - 14-4-2010 at 11:23 AM

id still register, im a sucker for a shirt, lmao!

but for me to compete... it wouldnt be pretty, lol

erratic winds - 14-4-2010 at 11:37 AM

DSO was a shirt plus a custom printed DaKine rashguard.... I felt like a sucker for not registering.

Drewculous - 14-4-2010 at 11:39 AM

this sounds sweet, and its a much shorter drive than NABX, lol... i can actually talk the fiance into this on

flash - 14-4-2010 at 04:35 PM

I love you guys. :)

and yeah.. even if you don't compete please register when we open it up... not only will you get swag, but if we can show that we have the numbers to show up to the first event, most of our sponsors (and some that we are courting) have said that they would stay on for the next event.

oh and Drew... tell your fiance there is a roller derby match that night you want to take her to. I don't know any girl that hates the derby after going to it. (I wont be competing at the roller bout that night for obvious reasons.... but I know my girls will show at least your fiance a good time :)

update: we have a graphic designer on board for the flyer and tee.... He just wants to know our 'style'. we were thinking skater punk kinda... open for ideas tho (do you have a favorite image, song, theme?) Keep up the name suggestions they are all going in the pot for the final round.

High Tide in Denver

flash - 20-4-2010 at 07:21 PM

'Gust or Bust' is set for the first weekend in October. (The name makes sense to anyone that has flown in Colorado)
Still looks like it will be $20/25 for competitors and anyone wanting to fly their kite, $10/15 for spectators (those not flying)

Plan is to have Friday night be the meet and greet and the race rules rundown. (will be very simple) Saturday and Sunday we will fly. We are working on having a band come out for Saturday night. Venue to be announced.

We are working out all of the details on fields and back up fields.

The flyer will be out soon, will post it. I hope everyone can come! please at least try and show for it.... nothing like showing that there is a chance for this sport to take off in North America!

Contact info: (720) 204-3118 Gust or Bust dedicated line
gustorbust@gmail.com
or Gust or Bust on Facebook (still bare, working on it!)

There will be no restrictions on type of kite or board, but for insurance etc... you must have a helmet and knee pads. Elbow pads, body armor etc... will be optional.

Races: (both amatuer and pro versions)
1. We will be having a traditional race with a little twist. There will be a standard downwind, crosswind and upwind section. The twist is that it pretty much will be a one-on-one/head-to-head competition but the competitors go in opposite directions on the same course. (Think a figure 8 and one goes clockwise the other counter, finishing means crossing the same start point) For those of you that know the 'march-madness' style of advancing, it will be like this.
We thought of doing the more traditional race in this manner for a few reasons:
* landboarders hate enduros.
* we might be working within 6-10 soccer fields, thus a limited space to have all the competitors on the field at once
* this is a way of stretching out the racing over a longer period of time, instead of only one hour of competition.
* this adds a new dimension to racing

2. Big Air/Freestyle Comp: For those of you that would rather throw tricks then race, we are looking at combining wake-style and snowkite trick rules for scoring. (Unless anyone knows of any landboard points system?) MBS has told us that they will bring ramps etc...

3. Best-in-show (this will have a new name) : this will be at the end of the event and will be awarded to the person that is most voted by the other competitors or spectators. I mentioned it earlier, but since we will be having a lot of people brand-new to the sport there, I want to encourage them to keep returning.

Happy riding!!! I will keep adding as it comes on!

nic

Drewculous - 21-4-2010 at 06:53 AM

Fan-f*cking-tastic!!!

neither of us have ever been to a roller derby... sounds like a good time tho!

Thanks for all the hard work on this! it is shaping up to be really cool!

McDuck - 4-5-2010 at 09:46 AM

This is going to rock. Now I just have to get my wife to approve the trip.

-mj- - 27-5-2010 at 05:58 AM

Congrats on an awesome effort there!
looks like the start of something great, keep up the good work.

For those thinking they're not good enough to compete, really just go for it, you'll learn more in one comp then in ten sessions on your own.

Gust or Bust, love it

WELDNGOD - 15-6-2010 at 06:07 AM

Can't travel that far for kiting. But I'm thinking ,you might as well give the first place trophy to CarlTB. He is about the best I have seen. But ya never know. Good luck w/ your event Flash, hope it becomes a regular thing.

Go big or go home:frog:

erratic winds - 15-6-2010 at 05:18 PM

Heh, thankfully the odds are very low of Carl actually making it across the pond for this.

All I know for certain is it's going to be awesome.
