Board Practice

Hardrock - 31-5-2010 at 06:59 PM

OK, a while back a friend told me to practice and learn to jump on and off of the ATB. Get used to it.

Well I've been doing that in the house for some time now and its starting to pay off. I couldn't land in the bindings at first, but now its getting easy.

Time to move on. What else is good practice? Some things that can be done inside that will help me outside in the rough.

Well, anything out or inside that will help while the wind doesn't blow.

Thanks

dgkid78 - 31-5-2010 at 07:05 PM

I say its time to get the kite out with the board and practice moving slowly :spin:

Hardrock - 31-5-2010 at 07:29 PM

Thanks dgkid, I have been out with the kite a few times. Had some down winders.

Thinking part of the problem (other than being terrified) was the board won't turn. It has the yellow cubes in the trucks. So I have some new #2 (blue or purple I forget) on the way.

Kite time is tough to get. When I have time and wind I'll get with it. Kind of why I'm looking for at home drills.

Looking for things that will help when I do go with a kite. Like jumping in and out of the bindings. That feels important.

But your right, nothing could be better than just doing it.

Anything else?

mougl - 31-5-2010 at 07:45 PM

I would think just doing it would be the way bro. Thats how I'm doing it so far. (and not doing it well yet lol)

Another thing I do sometimes at home when theres no wind, and mind you I dont know if this is doing me any good or not, is getting in the bindings and just doing "hop 180s" and trying 360 the same way...

ikemiester - 31-5-2010 at 07:53 PM

Do you have board skills in general? If not, learn how to bomb hills and whatnot, the turning techniques could help, although good luck finding a way to powerslide on pavement with rubber tires:lol:

Hardrock - 31-5-2010 at 08:15 PM

Mougl, I do hop around a bit. That should come in handy. Didn't know you was working with a board. Makes ya jingles jangle don't it.:lol::lol: How close you coming to a 180 or 360? Try the jumping in and out.

I saw some stuff on utube. They was riding on the front wheels and such but WTH, I got to learn to crawl first. But thats kids for ya. I see older guys ridding very good too.

ikemiester, thought I still had board skills. I run down a grass hill in the yard a few times, busted my butt a few times also. I'll be glad to try the new cubes, think I can rip the grass up with them, just can't turn it now. The toe side turn means to crash. Yea the power sliding thing might have to wait.

Kamikuza - 31-5-2010 at 08:37 PM

IMO sliding is an essential skill ... easiest done in the dirt with a kite though.

I got channel trucks on the Kava which have polymer things you can put in the springs ... I took 'em out cos I couldn't turn either. Again IMO riding with and without a kite are completely different. Feels nothing like snowboarding to me at all ...

mougl - 1-6-2010 at 06:16 AM

Just hopping on the board (no kite, not moving) I can hop and do the 180 just fine...the 360 is almost there...going boarding/buggin tomorrow though. Finally a day off! Going to have a student there as well so hopefully there will be enough wind to give a kite basics lesson and get another one hooked....oh yeah and do some riding after. If I can tinker a bit tonight maybe ill set up the gopro for some comic relief

PHREERIDER - 1-6-2010 at 09:15 AM

with out the kite, board balance skills have to be on.

downhill is different , but alot of balance stuff is all fundamental.

golf cart /atv pull gonna be a little more like a kite ride. get heel side toeside action and some slide stuff.

a swing line with your harness is kinda fun , gives ab strength and timing , near sitting posture with the board on will give some simulation. a big timing help for swing out rotations and balance.

required : tree / high beam

rope

gravity

the more swing the better!

add a simulated bar on the line. it will add to the feel.

set up and posture are tedious to make it just right, totally fun once its dialed

Drewculous - 1-6-2010 at 01:23 PM

+1 for hills!

On no wind days i still ride at another park w? some hills.... long walks back up tho

Hardrock - 2-6-2010 at 12:11 AM

You know I've been thinking about putting a rope in a tree. But it was more for keeping me from hitting the ground so hard. Might have to put something together.

The new cubes came today, got em in right before work but didn't try much. I know it turns way better. I was scared I would smack the ground then have to work with the pain. LOL I'll test them when I get up.

We know this field in Anderson, the wind there is terrible. Like being in a twister. But, there is several paved runs right thru it. Then one big paved circle around the the field. Thought about getting pulled by the car around the place. Sounds crazy but its flat grass and you could ride in the grass or on the pavement. Cool looking place.

Google earth, White Hall Park, Anderson SC in that area.

If I get the rope thing up, I'll vid some hillbilly redneck practice.:lol:

pigryder - 2-6-2010 at 06:12 AM

I put a big rope swing up for the wifey two years ago, might have to hook in

Hardrock - 2-6-2010 at 10:39 AM

Ok so the rope is in the tree now. I've tried it several times. At 47yrs its gona need to be worked into a bit.

Swinging from a limb by rope and waist harness in 90 degree heat will take it out of ya.

Tried several times to shoot down a 2 foot drop, rope pulls tight and sends me out of control in a circle.:lol:

Once into a large stump and then a pile of concrete stepping stones. Going to move them as soon as I get my strength back.

But it has potential. I've cool off a tad and going back for more.

Kamikuza - 2-6-2010 at 05:59 PM

Looks like you can slide on concrete!
About 2:10 in ...
http://www.vimeo.com/12073389

Hardrock - 3-6-2010 at 12:09 AM

Yea he slid a bit.

I slide on everything and anything I go across, on my butt tho.

The sudden stops from up above then straight down is what gets me.

I went back out to swing from the tree today. It was going as good as could be expected until my make shift bar broke lose. I'll give it another go when I wake up.

It just seems so retarded. People passing on the road can see. But I can tell it will help.

Yeah,HR get rid of that board and get somethin w/ channel trucks or like my next purchase will be. at the very least, change trucks.

this is what I'm savin for

Trampa & Mountainboard.net are working on opening up a distribution channel in the United States. More Info

And since McDuck foolishly left this up.....

Hardrock - 8-6-2010 at 10:35 AM

The board turns pretty good now. The video with the bungee isn't a bad idea. I'd be killed tho. Those guys took some pretty hard falls.

Well, this is what I have so far. Not much but its already helping me keep the board on my feet. Giving me a little confidence on the board also.
But it aint pretty and the camera wasn't out there when I was hitting big air.:lol:

indigo_wolf - 8-6-2010 at 10:49 AM

It's a scary, scary thing when the first thing I think of when looking at that is wondering what you could do with a little more space and a vertically suspended bungee.

This way madness lies....

ATB,
Sam

WIllardTheGrey - 8-6-2010 at 06:06 PM

Thank you Hardrock for the motivation. I went out and cobbled a rig together from junk I had laying in the garage. This is the first few runs.

It'll take some more work the Rhododendron I have it tied to is too flexible, I'm not getting enough air.

WELDNGOD - 8-6-2010 at 07:24 PM

Uh, huh, huh, huh, like Beavis ,what the hell are doing? Just go out and ride the damn thing . kick it like a skateboard, ride down a hill. When ya do it w/ a kite, ya' gotta lean back and put your feet out in front of ya'. And try to keep the lines tight. That is the funniest damn thing I have seen in a while, I love you guys, you kill me.
The bungee thing is lookin like some good beach fun when there is no wind. But hangin from a tree,is for fruit. just get comfy ridin around on the board and get comfy w/ your kites and jumping if that is what you are gonna do on the board. Then it will all come together. Lean back and trust me
Oh yeah, don't ride in UNTRUSTABLE wind. Or be prepared to bust yo azz.
You gotta remember , it all changes when the kite is in motion. You can't learn that from a tree that is static. You are mostly getting upward pull, w/ a kite you are gonna get that side/ slightly forward pull that converts into foreward motion. Because it is easier to pull you foreward than pull you sideways. Until you get these very basic skilz down ,I would not worry about air. Or it could be a steep learning curve.

WIllardTheGrey - 8-6-2010 at 07:30 PM

I don't know about Hardrock, but I can ride on the beach upwind, downwind no problem its the landings that kill me.:bigok: Also the tree is fifteen feet behind my house while the beach is 2 miles away.... I know thats really close but I'm trying to stay close to home for the new arrival.

It is comical to watch though.

WELDNGOD - 8-6-2010 at 07:35 PM

try making a ramp and jumping it, that will teach you how to land w/ the board in motion. the rest is timing. Practice makes perfect.

Hardrock - 8-6-2010 at 10:09 PM

Hey Willard, That was like my first time also, but man your in the jungle there.:lol:

Special Forces will be trying to get you to join up. I've actually picked up on a few things with this. And as for doing it with a kite, the fields are 25 miles away. I can't just run down and set make a few runs, but here at least I can put some effort in it. Like you the tree is right here.

Weldngod, down hill is good, but the tree is a hoot. I've did some ridding with the kite but not much. Its getting me used to the board. All I need now is a big ramp to get more speed down the hill.

Let me know what you come up with Willard, I'm sure I can make it look more comical than it already does. Thanks for the vid.

PHREERIDER - 9-6-2010 at 07:25 AM

HR nice ! swing both ways , knees up, LOOK where you want to land.

good simulation on transitions! nice 180's!

you need some wind !

WTG same same , all day shaded fun.

mougl - 9-6-2010 at 07:40 AM

Looks good rock! Way better than I'm doing here...still having trouble just staying on the board with a kite

Hardrock - 9-6-2010 at 10:51 AM

Thanks guys, tried some more today, it makes for a sore mid section.

pigryder - 9-6-2010 at 03:06 PM

man I keep forgetting about this, I'm gettin on the rope tomorrow if its not raining :P

WIllardTheGrey - 9-6-2010 at 03:09 PM

Make sure to post video, we need more people to laugh at.:rolleyes:

WELDNGOD - 9-6-2010 at 06:09 PM

@ Hardrock, mougl, willardthegrey, did you ride skateboards as a kid? This will be helpful,it isn't the same ,but you would have better ability to roll on wheels. If not ,in fact even if ya did, get out and just ride it like a skateboard. Turn with it, ride up into grass , roll down a hill, ride it all over. It will get you comfy w/ the board being on your feet in motion. The gettin air will come later. You better get comfy sticking your feet out in front of ya and leaning back . You gotta have enogh sail or wind to support ya when you lean back to counter the pull of the kite. here is a pic of me flyin the8.6 RII at Wildwood buggy bash. Notice the lean back, and the feet out in front.

Mougl, if ya can't stay on the board then try a little kite and just roll around then try the little kite in some higher wind. After a while, you will be zingin down the beach/field. Then it will be time to learn all the arial stuff that breaks bones. Ya gotta learn to walk before ya can drive a car.

I guess I took to it ,cause my generation were the ones to first empty swimming pools to ride skateboards in. So I got a little knowledge boost. Just had to get the kite thing down.

hope this helps ya, keep on ridin and you will get better.

Hey weldngod, yes I did the skateboard thing around 30 years ago. Used to be a real idiot on one screaming down long hills, that had cars on em. We had a skateboard park in town also. Seen a many broken arms in that place, I think the song Black Betty came out then.
They always played it there.

I know what you mean about the feet thing. Got to watch Phree at JIBE for hours. Nice pics tho, thanks.

I did some down hill today well yesterday now. Busted it a couple times too. Rolled an ankle once doing slides off the rope.

I know you guys think its nuts but before the tree limb set up I couldn't shoot down that little bank. My worst fall to date was on that little drop. I like it now. There's another bank right after it I'm taking to pretty good.

Yea I don't plan on any air time with a kite in the near future. Just some rolling. I did ride behind the car last weekend, was fun.

The biggest issue is wind, a flat spot and time.

pigryder - 10-6-2010 at 05:08 AM

Hardrock stay with it man:thumbup: My son and I try to ride the boards acouple times a week at the house. We got a really sweet single track built and wow is it fun, when we moved in I wasn't thrilled about the property being on a hill til now :bisou:

A track around the home would be sweet for sure. Yea man, I hope we all can keep at it. I guess if it were easy I'd move on to something else.

I just don't wana break something I need. LOL

mougl - 10-6-2010 at 12:35 PM

@ WELDN

Hell yeah I rode em! used to build half pipes in my friends back yard every year, bit different with a kite attached ;)

Got on the board today only to have one of the trucks give out on me so as soon as I have the replacement trucks, ill be back. Not going to give up on the board. :wee:

WIllardTheGrey - 23-2-2011 at 03:10 AM

This is an old thread but I just tripped over someone doing it right.:wee:

indigo_wolf - 23-2-2011 at 07:18 AM

That's pretty cool Willard. Thanks for posting it. I expect the local constables and DPW would go ballistic, but still very, very cool.

Looked like the bungee was attached to both the harness and to a grab handle so that the riders body angle could be controlled.

Makes you wish you lived in St. Louis....sigh.

ATB,
Sam

flyjump - 23-2-2011 at 07:33 AM

If you want to learn all round board control I sugguest taking a skateboard to your local park to help learn the physics of riding...particularly riding switch. Learn how to flow around a park changing directions, learn how to powerslide, and learn how to land rolling fast. if you learn how to skate a miniramp (aka halfpipe under 8 feet tall) it teaches your brain and muscle memory how to focus on where you want to go and how you should move your body.

when you make the transition over to your mountain board, practice rolling down hills regular and switch. After you feel comfortable and confident, make a small ramp to practice airs on. Once you start using your kite, practice riding upwind and downwind, edging, and powersliding. All of this will get your prepared for freestyling.

When everything is all said and done the best thing to do is just practice while flying your kites. Nothing is better than actually trying it. You can sit in your garage all day, but the best way of learning is just doing it and crashing. Just don't go out in big winds too soon. good luck man!

I like to stay stuck to my board - Ratchet bindings all the way!! I only get worried about injuries with one leg in and one out...

Defo practice board skills without the kite. find a slope that runs onto flat and roll down it. hop 180's etc as you come to a stop and do it progressively earlier in the run as you get better.

put a small branch down and ollie it aswell. rolling ollies are great for nailing landings and aerial transitions when you start jumping with your kite.

Not sure what kinda trucks you have with these "cubes" in them but they sound f*cked up. get a set of channels or skate trucks that you can adjust with a spanner!

Stay lit!

Looking_Up - 23-2-2011 at 01:22 PM

I would be interested I the yellow egg shocks that yall remove I am a much heavier rider and they would benefit me greatly my board doesn't have any
Bought it from a garage sale for 10 hole dollars I love my grandfather
