I did it i did it then i fried my knee

flyguy0101 - 20-6-2010 at 04:57 PM

Guys have to share my day- headed to a new flying field i found (3 polo fields and 11 soccer fields) grass as far as the eyes could see and only one group of guys there playing cricket (yeah thats what i thought too) had the whole place to myself wind was normal mountain gusty 10-15 so i was determined to get some good runs on the mountain board, have yet to have any that were of length given my normal flying field and i did it. Was able to get several runs in where was able to fully lean back and have the kite almost in front of me as i tacked across the field - IT WAS AWESOME :wee::wee:. now for the unlucky part- on one of my upwind tacks back up a gust pulled me off the board about a 1' in the air thats all but the followup gust forced me another foot in the air and then came down on my knee sideways:wow::thumbdown:- it took about 5 minutes before i could even try to stand on it and then it wouldnt support me, seems a little better tonight but that could be the advil and percocet. All in all if i can walk tommorrow it was a great day:singing:- oh for those interested in what the kite was that took out the knee a 3.8 reactor- the small ones seem to have the bigger teeth:megan:

Make sure you add a couple beers to that and all will be fine.... If beer and drugs dont work tonight, you will have to add pizza tomorrow....
I know that sound drastic, but sometimes thats what it takes....

(Sounds like a super sweet field)

WELDNGOD - 20-6-2010 at 05:07 PM

Scott, glad ya had an awsome sesh. Sorry to hear about the knee.
Were you wearin yo impact protection?

Hardrock - 20-6-2010 at 05:15 PM

Glad you got to experience the run. Sorry about your knee.

I hope it gets better with rest but I can already see your too much like myself and will wait forever before going to the doc.
If you can't even walk on it, somethings wrong. IMO... but lets hope not. Maybe its just really sore as your thinking its a little better tonight.

Did you have any knee pads on? Just wondering if they might or might not have helped.

I'm looking forward to a few good runs like that. Think I got the right kites, good board and been working on balance weekly by doing related things. Its not as easy when you get a few years on ya.

I bet it was an awesome feeling. You wait and wait and try and try then one day you do it, I can't wait.

Hope your knee is better tomorrow, and congrats on the run and new fields.

Kamikuza - 20-6-2010 at 05:17 PM

 at borntofli!

Glad you had fun! Sad you had a mangle :( were you moving at the time?

lad - 20-6-2010 at 05:17 PM

Kneepads are good for direct impacts, but after I twist, torque or just plain "land wrong" ...well, knee and ankle braces are looking more useful. :karate:

flyguy0101 - 21-6-2010 at 07:10 AM

i did have some of the safety gear on, but the knee pads did not help , Lad was right i needed some sort of brace. Going to see the doc this afternoon (walking is a major issue this morning).
@WG- you had some type of shin guards you use that i think velcroed on- what are those I have a really nice grass rash on my shin that could have been prevented with those things i think.
Also to everyone else- i am discovering that my falls are harder then when i was younger what other forms of battle armor to you guys use- I usually wear helmet, gloves, elbow/forearm guards, kneepads. It sucks getting old- my mind says yes but my body says no and im only 40

Uh Huh! Lot of that going around with the little ones. Let us know what the doc says and heal real fast!

The Thor looks interesting. I think I would still put it in the knee pad category. Knee braces always bring these to mind.

Brace for sticker shock as well as impact. :o Yes, I know pricing is all relative.

flyguy0101 - 21-6-2010 at 03:17 PM

Alright here is the good news- appears to be very bad sprain crutches/cane for the next week or two, ice it daily as well as lots of ibuprofen and percocet. After the first week try putting it back to work slowly.

Now after looking over the protective gear- I am afraid that i might scare the children playing soccer if i show up as a storm trooper and then put up a kite:roll:- just visual that if you did not know about power kiting- people would scream freak and every field we fly in would be closed due to the alien invasions. I like those enhanced knee pads but do any of you guys actually wear that body armor for kiting (not saying i wont consider) but i do think my wife will make me reconsider teaching my 10 yr old to kite if I am thinking of wearing battle gear to go fly.

Glad that's good news.

Yep it's saved me quite a few bumps and bruises. Still need to get some knee pads though.

Errr....umm... how "freakish" does some of this gear look?

Pretty sure that there are 10 year olds playing football and running the ATV/MX circuits. Pretty sure there are moms on the sidelines and in the pits too.

As far people pointing and staring at the field... a multitude of sins can be hidden under baggy shorts and 3/4 jerseys... less slippage of gear anyway.

On the other hand.... dare to dream of a world where the local soccer youth are chased off the field by young armored fliers... non-functioning (or functioning :ninja: ) gun turrets on the family van are purely optional.

Sam

well said- especially fond of the gun turrets

flyguy0101 - 22-6-2010 at 07:03 AM

@silver & beast- the field is the Green hills park in Salem it is about 5 minutes off of I81 @ exit 137 Nick if you are still working down in SW va you should definetly check it out on your way- otherwise lets try to get together in a couple of weeks/ month and we could meet up there for the day

carltb - 22-6-2010 at 09:07 AM

the only protection i use are knee pads, crash shorts and a helmet. falling/crashing is not always about what you are wearing for protection, its more about learning to fall properly. 1. never kick your board off if a jump goes wrong, get the wheels down first and let the board take the impact, then fall over if needs be. 2, falling forward, fall onto your knees and use your knee pads to slide on until you are back in control of your kite or pull the safety. 3, falling either left or right, dont be tempted to extend an arm to break your fall as this will most probably lead to further injury. instead use your crash shorts and land on your hip then roll.
i dont crash as much as i used to but using these rules have saved me from serious injury

pigryder - 22-6-2010 at 09:53 AM

Carl I totally agree with you on falling, Scott I only wear my pressure suit when Im offroad riding the bikes, I guess I havent crashed hard enough just downhill moutain boarding yet to make me put it on :alien: I would have to be wanting to try some really gnargly stuff to wear it landboarding, its way more comfortable than it looks too

"Green Hill Park offers a wide variety of activities including 5 rugby fields, 11 soccer fields, 3 200 ft. baseball, 1 300 ft. baseball - all of which can be converted to softball. Green Hill Park is also home to a top notch equestrian center." :o

For anyone GPSing it or thinking about hitting it while passing through the area: 2699 Harborwood Rd, Salem, VA 24153 <<--- Click through... well worth it. Oh my stars and garters!!

Was hoping it was closer to my sister's place. :sniff: :sniff:

ragden - 22-6-2010 at 11:13 AM

That place is about a 4hr drive from where I am at. Maybe someday I'll drive out and take a look...

flyguy0101 - 22-6-2010 at 11:40 AM

rag,
let me know when you do, and i will join you, could certainly learn something. It is about an 1.5 hr drive south for me. Just be ready for some real mountain wind. Anybody can fly on the water in clean air, us inlanders get the funky gusts:smilegrin: a bad day at the beach flying is an epic day in the mountains. maybe we can get a couple of folks to get together there one weekend- could it be a reason do join NAPKRA :saint:

We'll have to set something up. I'm not real wild about 4hr drives, unless the conditions really warrant it. However, I'm sure we could set something up some weekend. It just will not be something I do very often.

So, keep me posted on when your leg is recovered and we can look at settting something up. I spend a lot of my weekends on the water, but I think I can take a break to do a little buggying, just want to make sure it is something we will get the most out of.

That park is also home to a huge Kite fest In the spring. I was hoping It was Great Meadow Polo Club‎

Added incentive not to fall off the landboard. Very interesting training method. :wow: The School of Hard and Smelly Knocks.

Kamikuza - 22-6-2010 at 11:42 PM

Bah, it's only bad if it's still wet. Although, on cold mornings a nice fresh cow pat is just the thing for warming toes and fingers!

For years now, I've played inline hockey on concrete with regular gloves and only shin guards - no helmet or elbow guards. You get used to sliding on your knees and rolling ...

With kites though - the problem is the jerks :D Getting jerked off in unexpected directions is how I injure myself! It's all good then suddenly I'm heading towards a bank like Superman thinking this is gonna hurt

Relaxing helps too ...

sp4cem0nkey - 23-6-2010 at 07:38 AM

Heal up, man.

May I suggest you avoid any sidewalks, curbs, or other hard-edged obstacles.
Catching an edge on an ATB - especially at LOW speed - can hurt like a #@%$#!!

Or... if you're like me and gravitate toward hazards, may I suggest a pair of

Hillbilly half-finger wrist guard gloves.
They run small and shrink a bit with washing, so purchase accordingly.

pigryder - 24-6-2010 at 11:39 AM

YO monkey do you have a pair of those gloves? If so do you likey?

sp4cem0nkey - 24-6-2010 at 08:26 PM

I do. They're pretty comfortable, but for flying on handles it makes it a bit harder to grip. Works your fingers out more, I guess. I bought them when I started using my ATB for crazy sans-kite downhill adventures. My wife makes me wear them now cuz I broke the same wrist twice in less than 6 months.

Kamikuza - 24-6-2010 at 11:52 PM

I've got some similar from a company called Harbinger that doesn't exist anymore ... they're excellent for skating! Work fine with a kite cos I hold by finger tips anyway ... and I've used them with the Kitewing on 'crete. You get used to them pretty quick and the protection is excellent!

Good to hear that that style is still made! Off to look at the Hillbilly site ...

There you go!
http://www.atbshop.co.uk/productdetails.php?id=1213&cat=...
"The Hillbilly Half Ass Gloves are hillbillys answer to the very popular Harbinger Wrist Wraps. Unfortunately the Harbingers are no longer available ..."

pigryder - 25-6-2010 at 10:38 AM

cool, I looked into getting a pair of the full fingured ones because I like to put my hand down when power sliding. I only want to wear them while riding downhill not while kiting as I tend to death grip the bar in an uncontrollable situation versus draggin my hand while power sliding :dunno:
