skim board

noob kiter - 25-6-2010 at 11:21 PM

Is it possible to skim board in shallow water using a kite.

Hardrock - 26-6-2010 at 12:00 AM

Yea, not by me but there's a guy on youtube doing it.

markite - 26-6-2010 at 03:37 PM

there are quite a few guys that find using a skim board gives them the best light wind performance for kite boarding. Shallow water - yes it's doable but if you bottom out you take a bigger risk of injury if you are traveling at speed. You don't even have to be going fast to be unlucky with a bad twist. Jim Everding (who, some on PKF know) broke his leg last week with a bad fall on a new twin skim - Jim makes Jellyfish boards, here is picture of the twin skim they made for a friend with his company logo. He does a great job on a variety of board styles.

noob kiter - 26-6-2010 at 06:05 PM

thanks for your helpful advice every one I decided to do a little research and my noobish advice i came up with was that putting surf board wax on your skim boars top AKA the part you stand on helps your feet stay on the board go figure:eureka:

Houston AirHead - 26-6-2010 at 06:51 PM

i got a sheet of black magic (grip tape) on my skimmy. works like butter.

man i love my skim in the surf. in 15mph winds, on my 12m Havoc(LEI) i can cut super far up wind. theres nothing like riding a skim on a kite strapless. it feels like your riding a giant butter knife while slicing through a warm stick of butter

PHREERIDER - 27-6-2010 at 07:46 AM

they are fun! the bigger the better .

i have a tendency to run it TOO close and the falls are nasty

Houston AirHead - 27-6-2010 at 10:06 AM

this thread got me going,

here is a youtube vid, not too many views about 3000. but, it is the gnarliest, sickest, call it what you want to, hands down best Kite/skim
session i have ever seen. it looks like it was at the Gorge.

pay attention to :48 seconds. WHAT IS THAT CALLED!!!!
he was planing on the back tip of his skimmer. nutts

sofa king - 27-6-2010 at 10:18 AM

i dont get how he gets the board to come with him when he jumps

shaggs2riches - 27-6-2010 at 01:35 PM

:eekdrull:This brings many questions....

How does one keep the board on their feet when jumping. Also how would one do a water start if they bail in slightly deeper water??

just pure skill, hes just usig the wind to keep it pressed against his feet. skimmers are very light so its like waving a sheet of paper against your palm. the paper just sticks to your hand.

sofa king - 27-6-2010 at 07:25 PM

skimboards arnt that lightweight, not the one i have at least......

Houston AirHead - 27-6-2010 at 08:27 PM

i should have been more specific, foam/fiberglass skimmers are light

Kamikuza - 27-6-2010 at 08:30 PM

What makes them good for light wind?

PHREERIDER - 28-6-2010 at 05:03 AM

on 48 sec.mark...

first of all, a skim or the directional in hi wind like that is hard to manage, if you have a flat spot like that yeah its fun.

looks like he started a carving turn but TOO HOT and aborted before kite goes around. not really a trick more of "holy chit no way i can keep it together" move and thats what you get in the last sec correction.

noob kiter - 4-7-2010 at 08:03 PM

I was wondering what a good type of kite is for this type of kite boarding the cheaper the better i don"t even have my first kite beacause I orderd a trainer kite online and they ran out of that type so I canceled the order now i'm looking for a intermidiate kite that will get me into the sport that I can use for a long time in many wind condition, I bought some cheap two line kites to practice maneuvering

WELDNGOD - 4-7-2010 at 08:29 PM

noob kiter ,u r lookin 4 the magic kite. When ya find it,let us all know where to get one. Start small get skilz and exp. ,then get somethin bigger and work your way up.That is the smart safe way.:wee:
Or you could get a kite that will show you what your FEMUR looks like. Personally ,I'm not that curious!

noob kiter - 5-7-2010 at 06:38 PM

can any one give me some idea about what kite would be good for some one starting who is a about 175 who would be kite boarding near the cape probably

noob kiter - 5-7-2010 at 06:39 PM

or a good beginner kite for body dragging and playing around in a field

Houston AirHead - 5-7-2010 at 10:26 PM

i want to help you out but you have to make sure to be specific when asking questions.

example:

what are your locations typical wind speeds
are you inland or ocean side
when you say playing around in a field that contradicts your other post of body dragging.

if you feel like jumping, or just want a kite that will muscle you around in your backyard, go with a 5 meter pansh ace from panshkites.com

noob kiter - 9-7-2010 at 03:07 PM

An ace 5m for learning skim boarding ?

I can agree that the 5m ace has a great wind range and is the cheapest kite you can imagine but it will serve up mucho agro trying to learn in the water ? It is made for land only ! Riding a 5m open cell on a skim board ( ask Flash Austin ) is possible but not suggested.

Looking at my bridles on my 5 I would bet BIG money they would stretch if wet and stressed.

You need to make up your mind about the water thing ?

In my experience you should be looking for a QUALITY used kite with pro' repairs online. You get what you pay for in this sport buying new. Repaired kites draw less interest and can be a real bargain. If you want to end up on the water , get a water kite !

Houston AirHead - 10-7-2010 at 02:56 PM

no for jumping

tridude - 10-7-2010 at 04:55 PM

HQ Hydra for beginner with land and water relaunch capabilities.................................

noob kiter - 11-7-2010 at 05:37 PM

Bladerunner what are good used kite web sites http://www.kitetrader.com is the one ive been looking at

noob kiter - 11-7-2010 at 06:10 PM

what about the HQ Neo 2 6m for a begginer some people dont think their are kites that can be used on land and in the water ?

noob kiter - 11-7-2010 at 06:31 PM

My average wind speed for my state is 12.6MPH I believe it was

Bladerunner - 12-7-2010 at 06:43 AM

Local sites are better. Check the ones near where you live.

We are not supposed to link to other forums on here.

noob kiter - 20-7-2010 at 06:46 PM

i cant get to page 2 with out posting ???

erratic winds - 20-7-2010 at 08:00 PM

See how at some point it says "Pages 1 2" on the bottom-ish left side? Click on the number of the page you want to go to. No need to post just to get to the end of pages.

noob kiter - 20-7-2010 at 08:52 PM

it wasn't working for me until today if i clicked the top it never worked sometimes the bottom one worked

WIllardTheGrey - 21-7-2010 at 12:56 AM

Houston AirHead - 24-7-2010 at 10:16 PM

that was really cool,

noob kiter - 27-7-2010 at 10:35 PM

I was wondering what is a cheap beginner board type

NJLandboarder - 3-8-2010 at 01:13 PM

if i use a skimboard can i use a foil kite or do i need a water kite???

Houston AirHead - 3-8-2010 at 02:53 PM

it depends on how nutty you want to get.

foil kites meant for land can be used on water but if it goes down your Sh** out of luck.
you most likley wont be able to relaunch it.

if you intend to just play around in the surf with an onshore wind with a skim. a regular power kite can give ya lots of play time.

NJLandboarder - 3-8-2010 at 03:07 PM

oh okay thank you are hydras good for stuff like skimming or even knee boarding

Houston AirHead - 3-8-2010 at 07:13 PM

well i dont know what size they come in, and looks like you got some crap wind there in NJ.

your going to need a big enough kite to get moving.

i dont think you want to get a hydra they only make them up to 3.0 meters.

i mean sure if you have 25mph of wind all the time it would work ok.
i think you should look out on eBay for a used LEI kite. Bow style
not a "C" kite, look for somthing around 12 meters. nothing over 400 bucks
also make sure it comes with bar/lines/pump, your going to need a harness as well

or, just go to panshkite.com and buy a 5 meter pansh ace. and let er rip
