Anyone willing to make the drive is welcome to come out and ride. It should be HOOOJ fun!!!

I would like to know how many of you are definitely coming so i can try and scout some accomodations and food for us.

Kelly if you can get some local motel names/numbers that would be greatly appreciated.

bigben91682 - 1-9-2010 at 05:15 PM

It's about 50/50 right now but I might make a day trip of it, I'd love some open space to test the zooter before WW.

cheezycheese - 1-9-2010 at 08:02 PM

That's awesome Ben. Hope you can make it...!

kteguru - 1-9-2010 at 08:37 PM

Hope you can make it Ben:thumbup:

Jaymz - 1-9-2010 at 08:44 PM

YES SIR EEEE fellas! Heard the APB on the news today ;)
Been working my butt off all week and missed PKF a few days.
I should be there both days but might have to leave a little early Sat. The wife made plans to go to dinner with some old college friends and I'm included. Hope it's not a late one and I can get back early on Sunday. I'm bummed I'm gonna miss the Chessy after hours antics Sat night.

buggydanny - 2-9-2010 at 07:47 AM

I have wanted to try some buggy speed runs on a large piece of tarmac for a long time and am glad that I will finally get to try it. Thanks Cheezy for letting us know that this place exists and for organizing the event.

I a looking forward to checking out Flody Bennett field and to hanging with the traction kiters who make it to the event.

kteguru - 2-9-2010 at 01:38 PM

Good to see you posting Dan. Your up to 16:thumbup:. That's like one a year:ninja::smilegrin:. I'm just busting your chops:smilegrin:. I'll be gunning for you though out on the tarmac:evil::evil:...................errrr,,,well,,,,not that I'll catch you but I'll try anyway:smilegrin:. Orange cones are in the bag for a little racing action too:moon::wee:

Jaymz - 2-9-2010 at 06:26 PM

Orange cones?!?!?! GREAT! SLALOM TIME! :wee:

kteguru - 2-9-2010 at 09:10 PM

Todd - 4-9-2010 at 04:45 PM

Small Posse forming from the south as we speack...... I'll call you tomorrow Cheesy.

kteguru - 4-9-2010 at 04:51 PM

Thanks Dean but I'll save the afterburners for Rian on the beach... afterburners + Tarmac = a whole lot skin I can't replace if something happens. How long of a run do we have up there anyways?

kteguru - 4-9-2010 at 07:59 PM

From Google maps it looks like each of the 3 runways we have available are 3/4 of a mile long. Plenty of room to crack 60:smilegrin:. Or 80 or 90:wee::wee:.

Todds bringin the Afterburners? We may need brakes......and leathers ;-)

Btw, should I leave the buggy in Bigfoot trim, or change back to XR? The wide axle and stability of the BF are a plus, but the smaller XR wheels will be faster and maybe have better grip? Haven't checked, but any way you can run the smaller XR wheels on the wide axle? The BF wheels use a 20mm bolt and the XR uses a 16?

Todd - 4-9-2010 at 08:56 PM

Yes Jim switch over to the smaller rubber, leave the drop tube and extended axle in place but change back to the XR front fork. You'll be rocking and a rolling.

I have some 20mm tires for you to use with that extended axle .

cheezycheese - 5-9-2010 at 12:39 AM

cool guys, i am totally S-T-O-K-E-D !!! will switch my tires out tommorow. can't wait!!
gotta get an impact vest or some pads quickly....:cool2:

bobalooie57 - 5-9-2010 at 05:18 AM

Man, I wish I could be there! But if I'm gonna make Wildwood, gotta save my pennies...:saint: What I'd like to know, Dean, is how you plan to hit 60+mph on tarmac/concrete (some of it apparently textured!) with your butt only 4 inches from terra firma, without runnin over them HOOJ BALLZ??!!!:shocked2::crazy: Anyway I wish I could join you all, have fun, be safe(as possible) and see you in Wildwood!

kteguru - 5-9-2010 at 05:32 AM

Textured gives better adhesion:yes:. The belly pan protects the personal undercaraige;).

cheezycheese - 5-9-2010 at 05:06 PM

Kelly any word on the hotels...

NOMOTOR - 6-9-2010 at 08:11 AM

I'll be there on Saturday:spin:
Peter

gemini6kl - 6-9-2010 at 03:21 PM

rocfighter - 7-9-2010 at 03:24 AM

Cheesy it turns out we have the whole weekend off. And I may be able to talk Sandy into heading down for Sat. Still have plans on Sun.
I hope to see you knuckheads then. If not WBB is coming up soon.

kteguru - 7-9-2010 at 08:47 AM

Hope you can make it rocfighter. This is turning into another WW:thumbup::thumbup:. Only a couple days to go before we're burning rubber on the runway:flaming::wee:.

gemini6kl - 7-9-2010 at 08:54 AM

There is no need to do anything when u get to floyd bennet as no one will bother u except for a curious passer by however rangers do patrol every now and then . Just head in make the first left after u pass the entrance then drive a little way and make the first right. the field is marked off with a series of orange cones about 2 feet high . be sure to stay off the grass as its restricted.

cheezycheese - 7-9-2010 at 09:22 AM

Well obviously a desk clerk without a clue ;-) That's funny; I guess I should have checked before calling. My bad.

kteguru - 7-9-2010 at 12:05 PM

kteguru - 7-9-2010 at 12:06 PM

Hey I was rocking my Barry White voice trying for the discount... apparently she didn't like Barry White  I guess we need a count of everyone needing a room and go from there. I will only be able to attend for one day.

kteguru - 7-9-2010 at 12:33 PM

Since the discount appears to be 5% it's probably not worth worrying about. See you guys at 9 am on saturday:singing::singing:

Jaymz - 7-9-2010 at 09:39 PM

Todd, They must of told you $140 is the "clean sheets" rate. ;-)

cheezycheese - 7-9-2010 at 09:49 PM

Hey Jimmy will you still be able to bring the trailer...?

@Dean here goes another years worth of posting. Bring it on, but you really should get me. My kite are 2 generations older than yours and they have had a long life of "improper" sloppy balling and stuffing into there bags as apposed to "proper" neat folding when there put away.

@Kelly What is it like at the ends of the runways? Are there any walls or barriers in the way that might hurt if you come in hot and can't stop in time?

kteguru - 7-9-2010 at 10:52 PM

@Dan......... an experienced kiter like yourself should really try and post more often. Everyone on the forum would certainly benefit from your wisdom. As far as your kites are concerned I thought your NOS 2m RM with new line and handles flew like a dream..........it's all the other RM's with 8 inch tears, lines that are out by 6 inches, and 4 inch long handles on a 6m which make them legitamately difficult to fly. But in your defense my friend,,,,,,with top flight equipment you'd be a holy terror out there which no mere mortal would ever be able to catch. See you on the runway mate . BTW..... no more processed synthetic food on the drive out there OK;)

cheezycheese - 7-9-2010 at 10:57 PM

Questions-
@Kelly - how do you stake down your kite out there..?

Everybody else- what are you guys using for protection...? And don't say Trojans !!!

kteguru - 7-9-2010 at 11:05 PM

661 elbow and knee and HJC full face helmet. Gloves help also. I never got around to finding some 661 upper body armor.

rocfighter - 8-9-2010 at 03:36 AM

I used a new technic for holding my kite last night. I lost my stake and Cameron needed a hand so I remebered seeing that PTW often hangs his handles over his rear tire with the buggy sideways to the wind. It worked great for me. But my buggy is heavy and has knobby tires. A STD PL would just blow away I suppose.

acampbell - 8-9-2010 at 04:12 AM

I'm getting a huge vicarious thrill watching this come together. Wishing you guys nothing but the best for a great weekend. Watch out for that runway... harder than the playa and just as abrasive...

kteguru - 8-9-2010 at 08:49 AM

Maybe you'll be able join us cannonballing it around Floyd Bennet next year Angus [cue Cannonball Run music]

Putting your lines over a rear tire like Rocfighter said is one way Cheezy. Works pretty well in reasonable winds. Another option is to spread out your kite against your buggy (or any large immovable object) and unwind your lines away from the buggy going upwind.

bobalooie57 - 8-9-2010 at 08:56 AM

Oh, and be careful about looping close to the ground, kites scuff up pretty easily on the runway!

bugymangp - 8-9-2010 at 09:10 AM

tires too!!!!
last year i had worn tires on my blokart. but i said what the hell they`ll last me thur the day.
i was wrong. i got a flat(lots of glass) within the first hour i was there. lucky being with such good people i had a new tire and tube on in no time and back in the saddle again.

gemini6kl - 8-9-2010 at 05:20 PM

no problem,,, hope i will be able to drop buy on sunday evening as i work on saturday, well to stake down your kite that will be an issue as u guessed u cant do tht there, u will need like 2 or 3 small hand sized weights or sandbags .

cheezycheese - 8-9-2010 at 05:58 PM

Kelly can't you be sick on Sat...?

bobalooie57 - 9-9-2010 at 09:19 AM

Man, I was just googling around FBF. Darn, what a spot! Looks like powerslide tracks at the S end of runway 19.(maybe my imagination) Now on top of the other 2 reasons I can't go,(my dogs, can't leave them alone. also sorry to hear about your loss, cheezy, they are family members, afterall) they tell me we have to make the cheese on Saturday.:sniff: Well, maybe next year!

kteguru - 9-9-2010 at 10:30 AM

I couldn't find these tracks on runway 19 but we'd be happy to put some there for ya!:wee:

Crash - 9-9-2010 at 05:21 PM

Hey Guy,s ,seems it's been a while. I can help with shade, food and music. regarding hotel a commendations, theirs plenty of bead & breakfast or cheap lodging all around local area. My GPS can help you decide witch one you want to use . I wish I new about this event earlier cause I have a better place to buggy and landsail at Calverton runways east on Long Island. No biggy cause you'll have fun at FB. If anyone want to try a hand at flying a remote control planes ? My club is there also. Archery, kyacking and a cool aviation museum, you can sit in restored jets heli's ect. the Aviator sports complex has a nice cafeteria and restroom and we have porto toilets too. CHEEZY, don't worry about protection to much cause the runway has no obsticals and I don't think winds this weekend will get you screaming. I have if you need..... now last weekend ,where were you guys ? cause it was sick ! Come down and friends and myself will be there to help in anyway. I hope you didn't pay for permit cause I could have your event free knowing all the park rangers the way I do. Next time give me a yell so I can save the you the trouble. I'm praying the weather has you honkin and hope you get all get here safe ....till then...ps if theres no wind ,I have a few pocket bikes we can race

Hey Crash,

PLEASE bring the pocket bikes. Will be good fun if there is no wind. I'll bring leathers and an XR70 with slicks. We roadrace minis and teach kids "racecraft" with NJMiniGP @ New Jersey Motorsports Park and Englishtown kart tracks.

Chezzy, Won't have the trailer until next week.

Crash - 9-9-2010 at 07:38 PM

some answers to some questions....the runways have barricades at 3 sides closed to traffic so it's just you guys and a occasional park or police making rounds. The runways are connected in a triangle so no matter what direction you have a line. one side is open to an RC flying club runway that can sometimes spill into our triangle but if your lucky enough you'll see a spectacular "CR@SH" just keep a heads up when down that end . yes dragging kites low will catch light shrubs or scrape up kites good if not aware. It's easy to hold a line either direction with others going opposite directions from each other. I kite so I read buggys lines when blokarting but if new to runway ,you'll catch on. Carving will wear tires at end of day but last. if you like speed then your tires will hang for weekend. The glass is street sweeped already and was left from last winters snow they dumped. Now theirs a pile of mulch that's really is not in our way on back runway. the winds predicted NW or N so 2 runways will be perfect direction. We use a bunch of sand bags or weights to anchor kites and the barricade wall sometimes too. I've hit the barricade and moved a couple times. Most are empty but they are supposed to be filled with water to keep them in place . Once and a while you'll get a jerk drive past the signs on runway, till the cops catch them , Sometimes across your path but you'll have plenty of room to avoid. the RC guys #@%$#! if you get to close to there flightline but again, you'll know and have plenty of room. Jaymz, your gonna make me break out my new bike I bought last week ( 2011 KX 450f ) Cheezy, right at ya . Can't wait to have you guys at FB but wish weather was cranking up some nice winds. you'll get punches though.....power to ya and hope you all get there safely cause Brooklyn has drivers that got there license's from cereal box's or something.

kteguru - 10-9-2010 at 06:27 AM

Just checked the forecast for JFK.........looks like big kites for Saturday and little bitty ones for Sunday.....Woohoo!!:wee::wee::wee:

Crash - 10-9-2010 at 09:32 AM

Hey Jaymz, I have electric pocket bikes and scooters ,not 70 cc so you'll blow us away. I did call friends that will try to bring them along but parks might complain if motorized on runway. The other side of barricade anything goes so don't go crazy bringing but ya can . I have a whole bunch of colored cones if needed .

bugymangp - 10-9-2010 at 09:40 AM

hey crash
i`ll see you in the morning. i should be getting there early. around 8am.
i talked to tom last night and he is coming too.

matthewlavin - 10-9-2010 at 10:29 AM

Hi, Anyone passing through NYC on sat or sun? I live in the east village and am looking for a lift out to brooklyn to get cheezy.

m

cheezycheese - 10-9-2010 at 11:50 AM

Matt send me your number. Im going that way.

cheezycheese - 10-9-2010 at 04:00 PM

I wanna say thank you to everybody who offered input, inspiration, and advice. I especially appreciate the effort put in by the guys who have to drive a distance for this. It looks like this is turning into a nice sized event with about 20 or so kiters and a few blokarts and other wind toys. Winds look light for tmw but you never know...
In any eventing am excited and stoked and rambling, so I'll see you guy on the runway....

Todd - 10-9-2010 at 04:49 PM

Cheesy, that was good stuff!!!

buggydanny - 10-9-2010 at 08:12 PM

Just finished packing, I can't wait to get there. Meeting kteguru at 4:00 am and heading down. See everyone in the morning.

buggydanny - 11-9-2010 at 09:34 PM

The first day of the 1st Annual Cheezeball Buggy Rally has past and I am looking forward to tomorrow. The winds were challenging today mostly from the NW with 0-12 mph with shifting direction. The buggys generally struggled while the blokarts did much better. The company was great, and I am sure everyone had a good time. The forecast is for more favorable winds tomorrow, we will see.

Floyd Bennett is a great place with a very grippy surface. It has been a long time since it has been an airport, so the surface has many cracks and weeds growing out of them. This is really not a problem while buggying, but causes problems during relaunches after a dropped kite. It also has many trees that have grown up near the runway that cause some wind shadows, using long lines help minimize this.

It is very different from the hard packed sand that I am use to. On the beach or grass I usually slide the buggy a lot to both control/scrub speed and tack. It is very hard to slide on tarmac. The surface is also low rolling resistance and it is very easy to outrun the kite. Also rapid stops or kite loops cause jumpy skids and the smell of burnt rubber; tire wear is very high and expect to change them often. I am hoping to have better winds tomorrow to experiment with changes to my buggy style to accommodate this new surface.

I took my camera with me, but as usual I was too busy having fun to take any pictures. I hope that some of the others that did will post some of them. Todd was out with his hero gopro today and I am sure he will produce a great video as usual.

matthewlavin - 12-9-2010 at 09:18 AM

I was thinking about flying down there, but the rain seems inevitable today sunday. Maybe it will make the runway a little slicker and help with the burnt rubberhttp://www.powerkiteforum.com/images/smilies/flaming.gif. The group pic looks awesome though. T shirts for next year or next week!!?? Tuesday looks great! (I'm local)
good luck,

What an event.

First and foremost that you Mark for all the hard work and dedication to host such an event. Secondly to all of the amazing people who showed up. With good weather and great friends I couldn't think of a better way to remember September 11th doing what we do because we can.

Thank you all. If anyone has pictures or video you would like for me to include in the video please send them to me! U2U or Email for an address.

rocfighter - 12-9-2010 at 04:45 PM
