fast and i was getting some small air but then the wind gusted up extremely fast and i flew in the air about 20 feet and dropped like a rock... i am
currently on my laptop in my hospital room i have compound fractures in three of my vertebrae and i am not allowed to walk or leave my bed i have to
stay flat. i just got fitted for my brace ill have to wear it for 3 monthes im pretty banged up
sorry for the missspellings but i cant type very wellMaven454 - 18-11-2010 at 08:53 AM

Sorry to hear about that NJ! Like Jim said, heal quickly! Time for a more reliable kite while in the air!bigkid - 18-11-2010 at 09:02 AM
OUCH!
Sorry to hear, not good. I can relate. How long before you can get out of bed?
Do as you are told and things will get better. You ready to get rid of the Ace? Or are you unable to think clearly yet?
Heal completely and you'll be back at it in no time.bobalooie57 - 18-11-2010 at 09:09 AM
Really sorry to hear, being young and stuck in the hosp. sucks! I spent 3 mo. in the hosp. when I was 12(fractured hip, both Tibias broken just above
the ankle, run over by a car while sledding, stupid) I feel it even today! Do as best you can to listen to the Dr.s, and get well. Wind here
yesterday was 0-gusting to 45+, I didn't go out.(old and cautious)cheezycheese - 18-11-2010 at 09:33 AM

You could always switch to buggying. It's safe...r, safer. Unless your name is Jeff rocfighter - 18-11-2010 at 09:53 AM
CJ I am an old man compaired to you. But 4 tears ago I broke a vertibre and hurneated 2 discs. I had surgury and for the most part I'm back going full
blast. I say do just what they tell you no matter how stupid it sounds to your teenage ears (I know it sounded stupid to my 40+ ears) but it is all
for your best.
I hope a speedy recovery and at least come see us in the spring even if you arent allowed to hot dog around.

I'm happy to hear you're going to make a full recovery. My 2 cents:
1) Listen to your doctors and the physical therapists so you heal right.
2) Don't ignore them once you start to feel OK.labrat - 18-11-2010 at 11:10 AM

I have to concur with 1 & 2 above. I have now missed three days of work taking care of things at home while trying to keep my wife quiet after a
surgery on Tuesday. She is not the type to listen to me or the doctors cause she feels fine. A little more time healing now should give you less aches
and pains or worse later.
Please listen and I pray you have a speedy/complete recovery.

Oh no CJ,I'm sorry to hear that little dude. Ditto what everyone else said about the docs and therapists. Physical therapy will be painful more than
likely, but you gotta man up ,and do it. You are young so I have no doubt you will bounce back. Now you see why the 5m ACE is called "the widowmaker"
If you need anything ,let us all know.
Get well dude, and take it easy for a good while.

Use the down-time to make a few Nasa Power Wings and handles. I know you were planning to make NPW-5s but you should try a NPW-9b which offers more
up wind ability. They're safer than other kites because they can't loft you. You can't jump them but they are still fun. Here's a link to NPW9b
plans: http://freedom2000.free.fr/NPW_NPW9B_plans_eng.html#NPW_prog
I'm pretty sure you used one of my NPWs at Wildwood. It was about a 3.5 meter and you were doing fine on it . Start out with a 3.5 and then make one
larger like a 4.5.NJLandboarder - 18-11-2010 at 03:39 PM
yeah thanks everyone im starting to feel better i get my brace tomorrow ill be sure to put kite stickers all over it and my parents are confiscating
my ace forever or til i am older. im probly going to switch over to water my parents also agree its somewhat safer
i have had to explain what kiteboarding is to everyone of my doctors only one of them knew what it was
and i think i might make that npwWELDNGOD - 18-11-2010 at 03:48 PM

edit: CJ , don't give up your groundboardin just yet dude. You don't have to get alot of air to landboard. I love to tear up the beach sandsurfin and
just cruisin around. Just use a lower A/R kite around 4m, that would go good w/ your 2m beamer.flyjump - 18-11-2010 at 04:28 PM

In the skydiving world when an accident of this nature occurs there is alot of discussion on how it happened so that others can learn and avoid an
accident. I think it is important that you share as much as possible to help the rest of us. (If you are willing) So forgive me but some
questions.....
What do you believe is the primary contributing factor to the accident?
Were the winds really unpredictable?
Do you feel a different kite have made a difference?
What was your manner of redirect?
What were the wind speeds?
What kind of surface were you on?
Where you on the board at the time of the accident?
Your opinion is respected and any additional information may prevent someone else from getting hurt. Hope you get better soon!!!Houston AirHead - 18-11-2010 at 06:23 PM
hearts out to you brother, heal up well. Listen to the Doc.
-KenBladerunner - 18-11-2010 at 06:27 PM
So sorry to hear about your accident.
Is there something about the Blokarts that you don't enjoy? It isn't that adreneline rush of getting air ( and landing ) but I can tell you I would
give anything to have a chance to enjoy riding the wind with my Father. Like others suggested a buggy would be a good compromise + still give you the
added bonus of sharing wind with the " old man " + your PKF friends . Tridude and a number of others on here totally enjoy the water / buggy combo ?
Listen to these guys about not over doing things.
I can totally see the ace folding up like you describe. Don't beat yourself up too much about this one happening. I think you can blame a lot of it on
the gear.
Heal Fast!

Kami, to CJ's defense, he is only about 100 lbs. he is maybe 5 ft tall. Dude has a lot of heart for this sport at such a young age! Not busting your
chops Kami, just giving you a little more info on the kid!
We all know what the Ace can do with no warning, it happened to me once almost identical to his mishap. I am a heck of a lot bigger than he is!
Know you don't mean any harm! :roll:WELDNGOD - 18-11-2010 at 06:54 PM
yeah, that is alot of sail for the little guy to hold down. We had the pleasure of flying w/ him at Wildwood , the kid has got the stoke for sure.
Hope ya stay in the sport CJ:bigok:snowspider - 18-11-2010 at 07:01 PM
Holy sh** CJ so sorry to hear about your accident. Eat well and think positive heal your body. You're a smart guy, use the time to study and design
safety gear , we are all at risk for serious injury. See you at WBB in the spring you can run with the low and fast guys!Kamikuza - 18-11-2010 at 07:11 PM

terra firma.NJLandboarder - 18-11-2010 at 07:26 PM
yeah to answer most of you questions i wasnt trying to jump it just picked me up i dont reall know how to jump either i wanted to learn at WWBB but
there wasnt enough wind either way if i stick witht he sport or not im probly gonna ask for a pumpie and a new spreader bar for christmas i might get
that 06 waroo 12m i also found a naish torch on sale at kiteboarding.com
but idk it all depends on how i feel and my biggest mistake was going out that day because the winds were like a record high for philadelphia there
was alot of damage from it on the news aparent the wind reaches 64mph at points that day probly a big mistake and after i had got to the field i
scudded across the wet field the ilanded it rested and then got it back up to take back to the car and that when it lifted meTibi - 18-11-2010 at 08:58 PM
CJ, get well and try to have a positive attitude. You'll be more cautious in the future. From what you describe... I agree... the mistake was being
out there with that lifty kite in those wind conditions. Many of us misjudged the wind speed or the gusty conditions at one time or another... some of
us got lucky and ended up with a good scare that kept us safe... others... are sharing their stories... to keep us safe. I know it's not fun to be the
example in this kind of situations. Hope everything will go well for you and we'll see you back in the spring.
p.s. What hospital are you at and how long do you expect to be there?Txshooter38 - 18-11-2010 at 08:59 PM
We appreciate your willingness to share. It sounds like the abnormally high winds are the biggest culprit. I hope you heal quickly....at least you
have your age working for you as opposed to against you like most of the rest of us old farts!!!

Hang tough, big guy. You have a whole community of fans (and fanatics) rooting for you. Hope you will be back soon, even if it is starting small.Kamikuza - 18-11-2010 at 09:35 PM
Ah, if you get lobbed there's not much you can do ... one reason I like handles is that I just let go I basically hold on with my finger tips and at the slightest over-powering, I drop the handles. Don't often have to
now, as I've got the feeling for what'll lob me and what won't. Probably :D
After being all downer on jumping with my F.B's, I gotta admit I do it too - you can't help it eh the landings are enough to put you off it in a hurry though ... especially, when I've already had back surgery to
clear a compressed disc off the nerves :okteguru - 18-11-2010 at 09:45 PM
Hope you mend quickly CJ. It was great meeting you at Wildwood and like everyone else has mentioned I hope you stick with the sport. I'm not trying
to give you a hard time but as Txshooter38 said it can help others. I think it needs to be mentioned that whether your on land or water,,,whether you
fly arcs, tubes, open cell,,,,,,, depower or fixed bridle, if you go out in conditions that are far beyond what a particular size kite should be
flown in you will always end up in a hospital. A 5m tube in 64mph will do the same thing. It doesn't matter that your over water. I don't even
want to think about a 12m tube in 64. Again, I'm not trying to bust your chops but hopefully others can learn from this. That same 5m ace can be
plenty fun for light guys like you and me in 14mph. In 64 its a death wish. Just my 2c.
Mend all the broken parts my friend and we'll see you at the next Wildwoodmacboy - 18-11-2010 at 10:15 PM

Sorry to hear bout your loft CJ. Keep us posted on your recovery. Hope your ready in time for WWBB '11.
Lucky your still young
I'm about an hour from you and went to the fields yesterday around 3pm. Was NOT a good day for windsports.
WINDS were SCARY! Would be 5-10mph for a minute or two, then gust to 30-40 for 10-15 seconds. Over and over. Had the 2.6 Viper up for a few minutes
and got frustrated going from overpowered to falling out of the sky.
So then I tried the Kitewing with Coyotes and would go 100' and then stand around for minutes waiting for a gust. No fun.
I think the soccer moms were all laughing at the old goon and his crazy flying machines. acampbell - 19-11-2010 at 04:57 AM

Once again you are man enough to be the one to point out you probably shouldn't have taken that kite out in those winds.
I'm happy to hear you won't turn away from the sport. The risks will always be there but patients and logic can reduce them a lot.
:Ange09:NJLandboarder - 19-11-2010 at 09:12 AM
to answer some of you questions i was on grass/hard dirt in a soccer field
my kite was a 5m ace (bad decision)
and i had a strop on my harness
my doctors keep coming in talking to me about kiteboarding saying to my mom that i should think about quitting the sport and moving to golf
GOLF! i dont want to play golf and besides golf is dangerous too tiger woods almost got killed by his wife with a golf club
and to Macboy: im getting some atentiion from the ladies and my girlfriend thinks im crazy especially cuz i told her im not quitting
and most of all what i learned from this ordeal:
1. pansch ace 5m= not so good idea (and the i told you sos begin)
2. gusty winds plus lifty ace= death wish
3. winds 30mph gusting up to 65= did your brain stop working?
4. life is like flying a kite when the wind dies down dont give up wait a while and itll be back up in no timeshehatesmyhobbies - 19-11-2010 at 09:30 AM
C.J. glad to see you are staying with the sport! Keep up the good spirits. I love the Tiger Woods reference!
You could have been hurt doing anything else whether it be riding a bike, skateboard, even just crossing the street.
In all aspects of life there are risks, might as well be kiting!BeamerBob - 19-11-2010 at 09:30 AM
yeah, that golf is a real adrenaline rush huh? I've never seen anyone
break kite handles over their knee or throw them as far as they can because they are mad about having a bad kiting day. Heal up and heed the lessons
you've learned.bigkid - 19-11-2010 at 09:36 AM
Glad to hear things are going well, your brain wasn't injured, tough
lessons to learn. The good thing is you are young and will heal much quicker than some of us. And you have to listen to mom and dad remind you of this
for the rest of your life, so you won't soon forget.
The last words out of my wife's mouth when I go out to buggy now is "Be careful, You better be able to drive home". I was unable to drive for almost 2
months before I snuck out, shouldn't have even done that. Been 5 months since I last slept in my bed for more than a couple of hours at a time, live
in the recliner most of the time.
Keep smiling things will get better soon enough.BeamerBob - 19-11-2010 at 09:46 AM
I've gotta ask how you can compound fracture vertebrae and not mess up your spinal cord? What did you back land on?bobalooie57 - 19-11-2010 at 09:47 AM
Ya, Like beamer bob said, I've seen golfers throw their clubs in the pond, once saw a guy ram his putter into a $15,000(?) green, but no matter how
many times I crashed, or crashed my kite, I always fold it carefully at the end of the day! When my doc asked what I do for relaxation, golf?(I have
great B.P. for a guy my age) I just laughed and said I go fly a kite! :wee:NJLandboarder - 19-11-2010 at 11:38 AM
yeah i have compression fractures in my L1 T8 and T9 vertebrae i landed on my feet causing my vertebrae to compress and fracture. if it gets any worse
i could hurt my spinal cord but now i have my brace it covers my chest stomach and back im gonna put a nice got winds sticker on it (i allready put
them on my mom and dads cars)erratic winds - 19-11-2010 at 11:53 AM

CJ, take it easy dude. I know how you feel . I also suffered a compression injury to my back. MRI showed herniated discs at T7-T8 OR T8-T9 ,I can't
remember now. But it haunts me every now and then. My advice to you is NO JUMPING or anything that will seriously compress your spine ,for a good long
while. My injury occured dirtbiking when I was 13 and I got better ,but at 36 YRS OLD it came back.I'm better now, but ya never know. That is why I
just freeride and keep the aerial stuff to a minimum(1-2ft at most). But I still find tearin up the beach alot of fun,and I love speed.
Peace out little man! Dshehatesmyhobbies - 22-11-2010 at 05:34 PM
CJ I know you don't really want to hear this, but glad you are back to school. Not bad for a guy who has a pretty bad back injury! You have a lot of
courage little man! Like Donnie says, lay back and heal well! Wildwood will be here before you know it! Time to invite some of your friends over and
show them some videos of what you do, that may help them to understand. Anytime someone gives me that "what the heck are you talking about" look, I
then ask if they have a computer that I can use for a minute!
Continue with Doc's orders, it will help you heal faster! Keep your head up and you will be good! You have some good people from the forum behind you!

i was talking to my mom about getting a kite forchristmas and she flipped and told me no then a couple days later i was talkign with my dad and he
said that im gonna stick witht he sport but i need a better kite with a better safety system
im not sure weather i wanna look at an inflatable or just any depower or maybe a kite that doesnt have any lift but alot of speed
my dad says i should sell my ace but i like the memories it carriesKamikuza - 4-12-2010 at 11:24 PM
The kites WILL lift you and you WILL love it ... get down to a beach with soft sand on a low wind day with a big depower and learn to jump properly
... that way, when it happens on a board you'll relax and LOVE it!
That's how it worked for me ... after dicking around on the beaches, started doing little load'n'pops then took the 16m out on an overpowered day ...
my first load'n'pop set me soaring up, up, up - thought I wasn't coming down
but rather than freaking out, I relaxed and worked the bar a little and landed and rode off - much to my surprise. I been hooked every since :DWELDNGOD - 5-12-2010 at 06:01 AM
CJ, get rid of the "widowmaker", it has a bad reputation for a reason.Seanny - 5-12-2010 at 09:08 AM
Get a Charger, Synergy, or VII! Safest depowers, EVER! Plus much more durable
than a tube. If you smack a tube kite and pop the LE, and it's the only one you own, you could be grounded for a while.
Cheers,

HAHAHA!!! you are wearing atb shirts to school when you get back??? man you sound so awesome!
sorry to hear about you accident. i used to have a 5m pansch ace. that thing was soooo crazy! i have a video up on youtube with mine. that thing
yanked me around like a ragdoll. the camera man sucked but the last jump of the day i went up like 20f the kite overflew me so i yanked it to the
right and came down at a weird angle. tried to roll but didn't hit at the angle i wanted and twisted my ankle and you can watch my head bounce off the
ground.
the camera man sucked, he didn't understand there was a zoom and on my big jump he literally ran track style w the camera on so i had to slow-mo and
peice the parts where you could see me together... i was so pissed. lol
here is my video w the widow maker. (don't remember how to put the video in here so here's the link)

is that 10m venom fin the for sale too much for me??joeblinky - 5-12-2010 at 11:01 PM
dude, i live in the middle of north america about as far from ocean as it gets and i pretty much have switched to peter lynn twin skins because they
are pretty much the only kites i trust not to fall out of the sky in these gusts.
in my quiver i have a 10m bomba, and 13m venom2 and a 16m scorpion.
i think you should be set with the 10m venom even in higher winds (up to about 30mph).
the twin skins are GREAT gust absorbers. let us know how going back to school goes.NJLandboarder - 6-12-2010 at 03:46 PM
interestingMaven454 - 6-12-2010 at 03:53 PM
The arcs are pretty floaty too, so even if they do pick you up, it's a nice soft landing.NJLandboarder - 6-12-2010 at 03:59 PM
this is very good information i just wanna get out of this brace so i can ride
i really hope i can get my parents to buy me a twin skin for christmasshehatesmyhobbies - 6-12-2010 at 04:02 PM
That would be a killer christmas present! I think that kite would be a pretty good fit for you. Just get pretty comfortable with it before you start
jumping!NJLandboarder - 6-12-2010 at 04:05 PM
my dad is for it my moms says " you have enough kites allready" but a twinskin is safe also
i need a new spreader bar which is the best for the money?
and hopefully if i get it i can learn at wwbb springInvertedForce - 6-12-2010 at 04:14 PM
I'd say if you can find a Venom II 13m, that'd probably serve you and your windspeeds best. The 10m will take quite a bit of wind to get flying and
jumping decently (20+) whereas with a 13m you're pretty much lit at 14-20mph.
Hope you start to heal up quick! Maybe I'll see you at the next Wildwood if I'm back on the East Coast at that time of year...kteguru - 6-12-2010 at 04:35 PM

Nothing is safe outside it's intended wind range. Just a reminder.

a 13m? isnt that a little big for my first depower?InvertedForce - 6-12-2010 at 05:08 PM
Not necessarily. My first depower set was a whole quiver -- 10.5m, 13m, 16m -- and I primarily flew the 16m. I think i've flown the 10.5 a handful of
times and the 13 quite a bit more, but still my V16 is still my favorite of the bunch. A 13m has quite a bit of power, yes, but it also has lots of
float and in the right wind conditions it will perform better and be more forgiving than a smaller, faster kite.kteguru - 6-12-2010 at 05:10 PM

Depends on what wind you ride it in. In 14mph you'd probably be fine. As the winds got past the 20's it might be a bit of a handful. Important to
remember you have the same problem and Ripsession and myself. We're all lightweight so it doesn't take a lot to move us.InvertedForce - 6-12-2010 at 05:13 PM
But the great thing about depower is.... DEPOWER. Knowing how to trim your kite's AoA is where you have the advantage and can fly in a massive wind
range! Even for you skinny guys! I'm on the same end of the spectrum as Kevin (Kamikuza), I need a freight train just to get me moving...NJLandboarder - 6-12-2010 at 05:19 PM
hmm well would a 10m venom be able to get me moving?Kamikuza - 6-12-2010 at 05:26 PM
It's my opinion that being lighter narrows the critical range of what kite you can use for the conditions.
Doesn't matter what size the kite is, so long as it's suitable for you and the conditions ... I don't think a 10m Venom will give you much of a thrill
though ...InvertedForce - 6-12-2010 at 05:28 PM

Agreed. kteguru - 6-12-2010 at 05:30 PM
I need to have more pancakes and bacon I think 2 of me = 1 Kami = 2.5
ripsession
Seriously though, just tryin' to keep the kid safe because I know he'll take it out in conditions where he'll barely be able to hold it down with the
bar out and the trim strap all the way in. Like anything else start out on the low end and work your way up.
