Playa report

corey - 28-2-2011 at 05:38 PM

Just wondering, have any locals been to the playa lately? We've been getting a lot of precipitation up here in Reno. How is, or has the weather been down Ivanpah way?

Wolfpaklv - 1-3-2011 at 09:14 AM

We received a bunch of rain a couple months ago and the dry lake was wet for a while. The way it dried caused the surface to become very bumpy. The conditions there are not what we are used to. We did receive some rain the past couple days. Hopefully just enought to smooth it back out. But not enough to worry about losing it for NABX...that is unless it rains again.

arkay - 1-3-2011 at 11:47 AM

There's always the soccerfield if the playa doesn't work out... We need a playa web cam and weather station :D

Bill, we just need to mount your weather station to the entrance poll at the gate!

nocando - 1-3-2011 at 11:49 PM

I will see if I can find a weather rock for you before I leave Arkay

Ruudje - 1-3-2011 at 11:57 PM

Well the playa was really good on Sunday ( Saturday it was wet wet and wet ) but that was on the Dutch coast ;)

Almost just a few days now .....................

Have Fun

Weather rock, I haven't heard that one in a long time. Good one

KAZEDOKA - 2-3-2011 at 07:36 AM

Old dog new tricks, I'll bite - What is a weather rock??? :frog:

deanaoxo - 2-3-2011 at 07:39 AM

Srsly?

If it's swinging, it's windy, if it's wet, it's raining, if it's cold, it's, ah hem, cold. If it's....well, i think you are getting the picture!

Still laughing at this subject, thanks for the chuckle.

We use the Styrofoam packing peanuts, and told the grandkids they are weather worms, if they are wet-raining, covered with snow-snowing, dry-sunny, gone-windy. hahahahaha

nocando - 2-3-2011 at 12:11 PM

Very good had a great chuckle

coreykite - 7-3-2011 at 01:05 PM

Hey Sailors,
Enough with the jokes... Here's the serious facts:
The lake bed was wonderfully dry and smooth on Sunday.
The main parts have laid down beautifully, with almost no "corn flakes".
Baby Butt Bay (south end - behind the evap pond) is the smoothest it's been in years.
Winds were up in the 15-25 mph range.
Pretty sweet riding.

Today has a 30% chance of precip but temps are back in the mid-70's by Wednesday.

I love bad weather before an event - Bad weather never lasts.
I hate good weather before an event - Good weather never lasts.

woooohoooo! thanks for the update coreykite:cool:

BeamerBob - 7-3-2011 at 01:26 PM

That's good to hear. I was worried about the surface. Does the surface texture change even without it getting rained on? Or does it just follow a progression till its locked in place?

corey - 7-3-2011 at 09:01 PM

Thanks for the update Coreylama! Good to hear

markite - 7-3-2011 at 09:35 PM

I bet you guys see a lot of interesting changes in the surface. I've been on some lakes that were like polished marble in places, then some with tiny craters, the corn flake surface, the frosted cake with all the little pointy bits, the small chunks laying around, the rutted bits.

That's a great update on conditions - fingers crossed over the next few weeks but we'll take what we get.

arkay - 8-3-2011 at 01:54 AM

so faster, smaller kites...maybe I won't pack the v19 ;)

Your v19 is such a gentle giant. Bring it, it will make a great sun shade!

arkay - 8-3-2011 at 02:01 AM

This is true... we can pitch the 19 and 15 on some short lines to make a big auto-zenith sun shade! I'm almost curious to see what the 19 would do in 12-15 on the lake bed. Note, almost. I have a feeling the 13 would actually go much better

BeamerBob - 8-3-2011 at 07:26 AM

I flew my 15m Phantom and apparent wind made it too much. I can't imagine a situation where an 18 or 19m arc would be appropriate on the lakebed. Winds low enough wouldn't fill it nor launch it. You might be ok if you used a leaf blower, then ran like a mad dog to launch it, and somehow got moving without luffing the kite. There might be that day that 4-5 mph is blowing consistently across the lakebed and you aren't overpowered once moving. Any vets ever fly the biggest of arcs on the playa?

geokite - 8-3-2011 at 07:39 AM

I had the same experience when I had a 15 phantom. Huge pull, but not much speed. Might be good for a tandem setup. I've never brought my 19 to the dry lake bed, just wouldn't be useful.

markite - 8-3-2011 at 08:08 AM

I agree with Bob and Steve,
If there is enough wind to inflate and fly then you don't need much. For twinskins we had been only bringing from 6 up to a 12 or 13 and then if it was really light wind I bring a large FB foil. There are times a 15/16 would be okay but it's usually a short time before wind builds or late day before it drops off and then it's the more like Steve mentioned with the power/speed.

arkay - 8-3-2011 at 08:08 AM

There were 3 medium arcs up last year at various points

Craig Sparkes - 8-3-2011 at 11:05 AM

Come on guys! Where are ure balls :D hehe!!

Great news on playa! Only just slightly excited now!

Wolfpaklv - 8-3-2011 at 01:06 PM

I always live by the saying, "If you leave it you'll need it". I have flown my 19m charger out there on the playa. But as Beamer Bob said it will only be good on the very light wind days. Personally I would rather fly a huge bridled foil on the light wind days. Just depends on what your used to. But remember to practice good kite control. Control your speed by reaching up wind to slow down with the kite LOW to the ground.

tdmc96 - 20-3-2011 at 09:25 AM

Just watching the latest sattelite images and it looks like rain in Primm.....any update on this and Im sure if it is raining, it will be short lived.

For what it's more we are getting a lot of rain in L.A. Long range models point to another very wet storm coming in on Friday, 3/25. Forecast for El Mirage is rain and possibly snow at night...

BeamerBob - 20-3-2011 at 10:16 AM

right now radar shows the rain not making it over the mountains. Lets hope if it gets wet, that it gets dry fast.

702dirtsurfer - 20-3-2011 at 01:34 PM

Just finished up a sesh at Ivanpah, no rain! Gusting about 35 today. Can you taste the playa dust yet?

My week just got longer.

Can we speed up time.

702dirtsurfer - 20-3-2011 at 02:07 PM

I was going to post another thread just to tease ya but this seemed a good place since everyone is worried its raining. Pictures taken one hr ago

arkay - 20-3-2011 at 02:32 PM

I pulled out a kite i flew on the playa last year and tasted the dust. Still fresh, but I'm running low...

InvertedForce - 20-3-2011 at 02:38 PM

You all are addicts!

SlasherQuan - 20-3-2011 at 04:07 PM

weather there looks a lot like here in Phoenix....very high clouds but no rain.....

I got a chance to talk to a meterologist about what it all means and found out some cool stuff....when they say 30% chance of rain it means 30% of the forecast area is going to get rain, weither it be a trace or 3 inches....and when the radar shows rain, it could be measurable rain....it could be virga (rain that doesn't hit the ground)....it could just be dust in the air causing a return. Just some info to maybe sooth some anxiousness.....because none of us wanna be rained out.

Hats off to 702dirtsurfer, your pictures have a calming influence because they show the true state of the playa.....I thank you very much, and keep them coming if you can

BeamerBob - 20-3-2011 at 04:17 PM

I had a meteorologist shun the same line of thought about % chance of rain once when I asked. I had heard the same thing. He said that it was just what it said. There is approx. that chance of rain in the entire forecast area but 30% chance means it might not rain at all anywhere in the forecast area. This seems more plausible to me, but alas, no degree in meteorology.

This backs up what I thought.

Ricky if it makes you feel any better, I just got done perusing houses for sale about a half hour away.

arkay - 20-3-2011 at 04:35 PM

We're all going to be there anyway; I'd just prefer not to be stuck out there! I'll have a deck of cards on hand in case it rains. I suggest we check the weather rock on Monday.

Sitting around in the circle of buggies is its own level of entertainment. It would be nice for it to not be in the parking lot at Buffalo Bills.

702dirtsurfer - 20-3-2011 at 06:22 PM

It was just a short session today. Hit 41, not too shabby for a couch sailor hahah. Still no rain in Vegas, primm should be fine :)

kite killer - 21-3-2011 at 07:58 AM

Called this morning to Elmers..seems they are busy fishing the:mad:re right now and can't play.

thrash - 21-3-2011 at 08:35 AM

I just got off the phone with a friend who lives in victorville , he says it rained all night till 6 am. lots of standing water when he took the kids to school all over. Victorville is about a half hour away from harpers.

coreykite - 21-3-2011 at 01:11 PM

Hey Sailors.
Worried over what you can't control?
Now, now... Don't fret.

702dirtsurfer - 21-3-2011 at 10:07 PM

I'd say I'll see ya out there,but I don't generally look behind me when I ride :D:D

awindofchange - 22-3-2011 at 12:48 PM

OUCH!!! You gonna take that Brian? Course Brian would be much faster if he kept all three wheels on the ground at the same time!
