(EDIT Picture) Good body armor for NABX?

flyjump - 1-3-2011 at 02:45 PM

Since it's really common to crash and slide out while freestyle ATBing, it sounds important to have some good body armor for the playa surface. Does anybody know of any good armor for legs and hips? Name brands or links anything that would be helpful i would appreciate. Those of you who have been to NABX before would you help me out? Thanks :)

Do you think these pants would work for the playa? Monster, Fox, and Fly seem to have a few pairs of affordable pants, but could you NABX pilots tell me if they would be good for out there?

661

Hit TDMC96 and see if you can borrow his pressure suit. He doesnt need it because he doesn't go fast enough to get an OBE.

Hahahah.

Are we there yet?

SlasherQuan - 1-3-2011 at 05:43 PM

I have Alpine Stars leg and torso armor, works pretty good.

macboy - 1-3-2011 at 06:05 PM

hehehe....yup. 661 pressure suit will give you the added "comfort"watching that hard surface whip by under you. Just wear it with pride. I stepped out of the KiteKoach last year the day after the world record day (winds were about the same) all suited up and the guys we were parked next to at the time had a good laugh at me. The wind was enough that all I felt comfortable with was the 1.5m yet I watched one of the giggleguys not much later hop in a buggy wearing nothing but a shirt, shorts and a ball cap!

Hooj! (?)

They actually laughed. I couldn't believe it. Super nice guys though - don't get me wrong. Was a pleasure to be their neighbour for the day but still.....I never ride without safety taken into account. Heck...look at the background to this webpage.....THAT's the surface! Phree ate a bit of it last year - he'll tell ya what not to wear ; )

Bladerunner - 1-3-2011 at 06:14 PM

Hillbilly asss pads are great for hips and tailbones.
Can't go wrong with 661

Jumping on the playa isn't generally encouraged . The nature of the surface tends to make those who should remain earthbound remain that way so it doesn't seem an issue.

I know I was looking forward to jumping last year but just wasn't feeling qualified. I wasn't getting in tune with my then new 10m Charger so stayed earthbound . Phree' was just enough bigger and better that he could hold down the 15m and was getting some great air.

P.S. I suspect K3 is going to blow folks away this year. He has learnd a LOT chasing Ricky and getting him ready for WC.

nocando - 1-3-2011 at 06:33 PM

Hi guys another question

In the US is it possible to buy Draggin Jeans (kevlar motorcycle clothing)

I know they sell jeans and jackets

but finding them is the tough part.

erratic winds - 1-3-2011 at 06:46 PM

nocando- Amazon.com has you covered! http://www.amazon.com/Classic-Black-Draggin-Jeans-34x32/dp/B...

(they have other styles too...in stock)

flyjump - 1-3-2011 at 07:06 PM

i've never been a big fan of the race suits, but i really don't want to turn my skin to shredded cheeze

Coolbreeze - 1-3-2011 at 07:47 PM

Hi

Last year was my first NABX and I thought it would be a really good idea to get body armor. I did some reserch and bought the mesh shirt type from E-bay. When I arrived at Primm I was really pumped and could'nt wait to get out on the plya, so I put my band new body armor on and off I went with a huge #@%$#! eating grin on my face, which pretty much stayed there all week, even though I had three OBE's ......... breaking a rib on the second. The funny thing is that I seemed to hit every piece of my body that was'nt covered by the armor, at the end of the week my brand new body armor still looked brand new which is more than I can say about me. This year I'm taking it with me but I think I should just figure out how to keep my a$$ in the buggy:eureka:

22 days .............. woop woop.

thanks cool breeze, i thought about that too, but i'm gonna be crashing more than the average rider since i'm going to be freestyling and jumping. i'll be sliding out alot on my butt and back especially when i crash during 720s and stuff. i really don't want to spend the money, but i think that'll be worth saving a trip to the hospital

Seanny - 1-3-2011 at 09:09 PM

How do you get a harness around a pressure suit/armor? Dumb question, I know.

kite killer - 1-3-2011 at 09:39 PM

The armor sure makes playa kisses feel much better! I harness first then wrap the pressure suit around. I had to make a hook on the back of the harness so the armor doesn't ride up! Makes for more of a body suit especially combined with wrist guards and knee/shin boots. People only think you look silly till you take off like a @*^^%$^&&!

nocando - 1-3-2011 at 10:01 PM

Hey Flyjump draggin jeans may be the GO

At least you dont look like a clown in an MX suit

The camo designs are ok

tdmc96 - 1-3-2011 at 10:02 PM

I remember last year at NABX when Dirk (Screwyfits) took a massive OBE over by the highway....he was wearing body armor under his sweatshirt and man was it torn up.
I also like to wear knee protection as the first year I went, I had my XR+ and on my first ride out...I OBE'd and tore up my knees pretty good.

27 more days till Rip eats playa dust!:smilegrin:

Thick skin works and is cheap as it will regrow.

flyjump - 1-3-2011 at 10:17 PM

I found a pair if decently priced moto cross pants that look like they may be worth looking into. I don't think I'll get a racing jersey or anything lol.

I had the same question about a year and a half ago. Link. I finely just bit the bullet and bought a 661 pressure suit.

With the harness on. It's not uncomphy but the harness that I sized to my regular waist is a bit tight.

The back protecter. I love it. I had an OBE where I got lifted then droped onto my side rail with no ill effects.

Front. I haven't had the pleasure of testing out the chest protector yet but it makes a good punching target for drunk "friends".

With the helmet on and everything my wife says I look like an action figure.:smug:

Bring spare tires, then. If you will be sliding a lot then think about 16 square miles of 60-grit sandpaper

flyjump - 2-3-2011 at 06:14 AM

Angus I'll have at least 4pairs of tires with me. I'll try and be conservative for the most part. I'll probably take it easy for the first day or so, that way I can get my bearing of how hard I can push things with a relative amount of control. I'm looking forward to meeting you and everybody else in the PKF family while I'm there. It's going to be a great time

flyjump - 2-3-2011 at 01:12 PM

I just added a photo up top, do you think those pants would work for the playa?

Craig a Stupid Dave normally take around 100 tires....

Craig Sparkes - 3-3-2011 at 07:58 AM

I went riding alot last year and used 30. Dave & will used 20 last year.

We have taken loads this year to last us for next year so none need to be sent!

n Topic - Those look good and could be ideal.

flyjump - 3-3-2011 at 08:00 AM

craig, i'm getting so antsy waiting around for NABX.... I don't really want to buy racing pants or gear like that, but I guess if it'll save me from shredding though a few pairs of pants I guess I should get something like that

kite killer - 3-3-2011 at 09:27 AM

Yeah, even my $700 Dainese jacket paid itself off the first spill. Like you said its cheaper than a trip to the hospital, and a slight reminder everyday you get out of bed!:ticking::ticking::ticking:

nocando - 4-3-2011 at 01:51 AM

Hey Fly just invested in a Draggin Jeans Jacket

pants to follow soon

nocando - 4-3-2011 at 01:56 AM

Can hand the bangs but the lost bark off elbows and knees gets a bit much.

csa_deadon - 4-3-2011 at 01:58 AM

This is what rip uses for body armor.

BUGGY NAKED!!! the only way to buggy!!!!

fredagie - 4-3-2011 at 12:14 PM

I met a guy on an ATB who had hockey pants, he said the padding worked well protecting impact points.

nocando - 4-3-2011 at 02:54 PM

Fly yes I did :bigok:

Bladerunner - 4-3-2011 at 05:39 PM

I believe there is a Buggy Naked Pin available to those who show picture proof to ? Cory Lama ?

I'll have to research what I said farther but think I ran accross that when researching my 1st NABX.

http://www.buggythang.org/aboutnaked.html

Here's the skinny on the pin !

carltb - 5-3-2011 at 11:31 AM

if you are wearing a waist harness, body armour just gets in the way. personally i would just have knee and elbow pads, a pair of crash shorts, a good pair of gloves and then invest in some heavy duty outer wear. motorbike gear is designed for high speed crashes on highly abrasive surfaces so looking in that direction would be a good start

flyjump - 5-3-2011 at 12:14 PM

Yeah Carl that's exactly what I did. Good set of pads plus moto bike pants.

bobalooie57 - 5-3-2011 at 02:34 PM

Hey BR, Thanks for that little bit of NABX history. bugymangp told me a little about it when I met him at Wildwood, and that link brought it all back. hehe, was that Peter Lynn 'himself' I saw in the gallery? :o

bugymangp - 7-3-2011 at 09:59 AM

hey dean
i don`t get it???
number 4 ????????

702dirtsurfer - 10-3-2011 at 06:00 PM

The first time I wore protective shorts was at the pre event a couple years ago. Anxious to ride, I jumped on and zoomed out. What I failed to take into account was the playa playa being looser there. I edged hard and the tires slipped right out underneath me. Padded shorts,no sweat right? Only if they don't slide down....along with your other shorts. Keep em tight,REAL tight lol.

I've gone through a bunch of kneepads (insert joke) here. Generic hard shell skating pads move around too much. Troy Lee and Fox make great motorcross gear that crosses over nicely. You want pads that are sleeved with straps, protection that slides is useless. Exhibit 1 my @$$ a few years ago. I've slid some long distances on these bad boys. Flexible, tough, and solid.

Also if you have or plan to slide around on your back a lot then the 661 suit of holy good god Batman armor is a good idea.

still figuring out uploads with the phone

Don't make me go look it up again. It nearly caused an international incident the last time. :o

bugymangp - 14-3-2011 at 10:03 AM

hey dave
bring it on.
i want to see my picture in all its glory!!!!!!!! LOL

mecdave - 15-3-2011 at 03:56 PM

Ha Glen, I was talking about a photo of AJ. I forget all the why-fors and what-fers, but I inadvertently posted his BN photo on the Flexifoil Forum several years ago. Either it was a lousy photo, or I had a lousy monitor, so didn't realize that's what the photo was about (I don't think anyone but AJ did either).

Anyway, good to see you're still around, and congrats on the new/old girlfriend! Be sure to post photos of the new hot rod when it's finished (or just looking good).

Wishin' I could make the event, but work got in the way again this year. Maybe next. Later guys and gals!

arkay - 20-3-2011 at 07:17 PM

Wont' those just get shredded and melt on impact? I'd think you'd want a hard cap.

It has thin, flexible hard shell on the front underneath the canvas and the canvas is pretty tough stuff. Been using them for years, and underneath your jeans they keep you warm too. Hard shell is fine as long as the pads don't move around the second you start to seriously slide on them, like the cheap rollerblading packs at wal mart.
