Any older landboarders out there?

Cheddarhead - 14-4-2011 at 04:01 PM

I know age is all relative, but I am now 40 yrs old and don't think landboards would be out of the question for me at this stage. The general stigma I get from watching all these vids is that its mainly the young indestructable type that are riding these things. Regardless, I'll be getting my first landboard next week and I'll be ready to go! Of course, brain bucket and pads will be there as well.

Any other 40 plus riders out there?

Seanny - 14-4-2011 at 04:11 PM

Yep!

His name is Carl Kirton :)

erratic winds - 14-4-2011 at 04:36 PM

I would highly highly suggest the hillBilly crash shorts or other padded shorts, falls hurt a lot on ground VS water!

carltb - 14-4-2011 at 05:00 PM

im 42. and as you say, age is relative.
progress at your own pace and you'll enjoy the feeling of jumping 1ft as much as you enjoy jumping 30ft.

PHREERIDER - 14-4-2011 at 05:12 PM

i'm 43 ditto what ctb says, fun! enjoy!

g-force junkie - 14-4-2011 at 05:25 PM

I'm 55 and I hope to get as good as ctb by the time I'm 65!

Cheddarhead - 14-4-2011 at 05:57 PM

Hillbilly crash shorts will be in the mix for sure! More protection the better is what I always say. Logged tons of time this past winter on the frozen lakes, some of those crashes on the ice were painful as well. There's just more clothing in the winter to absorb the impact.

Thanks for all the confidence guys!

Rock it Cheddarhead!! I just turned 44 and love it. Depending on the wind, I'll ride either my buggy or landboard. Really light or strong and gusty I'm on my buggy, otherwise I'm on the board. Finally made the transition to jumping with it and having a blast. What Carl said is so true...I've probably only gotten 5-6 ft but it's a blast none the less...Let us know how it goes.

Kamikuza - 14-4-2011 at 08:41 PM

Crikey I'm the baby here - only 37

sigma - 15-4-2011 at 02:57 AM

I figure I get off a kite when the wind matches my age in knots, I did do a 40+ session this Feb but using a kite on water, not land as I'm old but not senile.

My advise to a new starter is to respect your joints. I have had major knee problems caused by repetitive impact and when getting going you will find you give your body through new challenges and you don’t want to be limited by injury.

Age is a reason to start, not refrain.

ejmichel - 15-4-2011 at 03:27 AM

just received my landboard this week after picking up snowboarding this winter and becoming addicted.... I am in mid 40's and as advised here will take it easy to start. My biggest concern is that the snowboard slides sideways and doubt the landboard will. I expect a lot of "highsides" on the landboard as I learn. Cheddarhead I will let you know what I think if it stops raining this weekend!

B-Roc - 15-4-2011 at 04:38 AM

I'm 40 and I have two ruptured disks in my neck, nerve and muscle damage in my chest and shoulder and a messed up ACL in one knee and PCL/LCL in the other and I still landboard (those injuries were non-kiting related but mentioned so you know age and injuries don't have to limit what you do and when you begin doing it). Progress at your own comfortable pace. I will landboard until I physically can't do it any longer and then I will probably buggy.

mdpminc - 15-4-2011 at 06:19 AM

I'm 44 this year , whatever you do, warm up and stretch well before attempting any  stunts.
Helmet a must at all times, elbow and knee pads optional, but good to have if you go faster then you can go on a bicycle.

Bladerunner - 15-4-2011 at 06:42 AM

52

Bladerunner - 15-4-2011 at 03:58 PM

UH OH !:ticking:
You can't tell me I'm THAT much older than the rest of the boarders! :puzzled:
Now that I think about it, on water and in the buggy I'm not too old but on ATB I don't think I know anybody else my age ( chronicalogically )
Coyotes ..... I've NEVER ridden with another Coyote owner. :sniff:

canuck - 15-4-2011 at 04:19 PM

Go for it Cheddarhead. Age is all in your mind.

You are still a spring chicken BR:smilegrin: I'll be 59 in June and we rode Coyotes together at Vanier a few years back. At our age memories are short and sweet he he he.

I always err on the side of caution with kite selection on the ATB, go bigger on Coyotes, and am most comfortable on snow skis. Lots of faceplants when learning to landboard so I always wear my elbow/forearm pads, knee pads, impact shorts, and helmet. I even took the footstraps off the ATB until I could manage the gusts without faceplanting.

Bladerunner - 15-4-2011 at 04:37 PM

How could I have forgotten about my #1 Canuck ? I didn't realise you had any years on me!

Gee, I guess ... we can call that riding together at Vanier ? I did kind of forget about that . I remember that day for my 1st taste of an XXXL! We also rode Coyotes together at different times at NABX . I guess I'm still in NABX and Washington beach brain at the moment!

doneski - 15-4-2011 at 04:43 PM

I'm 54, ride Coyotes and buggy.

Cheddarhead - 15-4-2011 at 06:11 PM

Simply amazing the amount of landboarders around here my age or older! Never in a million years would I have thought. Your all an inspiration, thanks.

Ya know it seems like such a catch 22. When your really young and have all that testosterone ripping thru your veins, you can hardly afford the equipment to kill yourself.
When your older and more established, (hopefully smarter now) you can afford the stuff a little easier but are more mature to realize that your no longer invincible. I think it's a good thing, or I would have been in trouble many years ago.

djinnzfree - 16-4-2011 at 03:11 AM

I'am 42, had bought this week a used mbs_core90... soon in a buggy but normally winter on skis!

furbowski - 16-4-2011 at 05:07 AM

43 years, just had my first park n rides today.... Blade IV, GI 106 with 10" tires, semi hardpack wet sand.

If the winds are light, as they were for me (5-12 gusty), the learning curve can be more about skill and just keeping wind in the kite than about crashing... I hopped out of the bindings a lot and had a few two-wheel slides but had no trouble avoiding a faceplant, or even falling to knees/elbows.

flyguy0101 - 16-4-2011 at 05:38 AM

I'm 40 and just landed my first jumps yesterday. Sore this morning but still grinning.

doublespeed360 - 18-4-2011 at 07:39 PM

55+++ HELMET and knee and elbow pads prettymuch, when i reallythink i'm going to junp armor shirt and butt pads but sometimes i dont know if i'm jumping then no shirt and butt pads ,i have to punish my self first, crash & learn, adam b.was thinking about butt pads but he makes it look you don't need them he floats in the sky nominally

WELDNGOD - 18-4-2011 at 08:09 PM

47 here, and I ride a TRAMPA!

702dirtsurfer - 18-4-2011 at 10:00 PM

The man who taught me is 80+ and still rides a landboard! Or at least he did a few years ago. Granted its 100 ft back and forth across the smoothest parts of the playa with a foil off the bridles, but still counts in my book! :wee:

If you don't stop playing, you won't grow old he used to tell me. Then again he also use to say 500 was the minimum amount of women I could date before I get married....so he must be a genius

BeamerBob - 18-4-2011 at 11:16 PM

I've not spent more than an hour total on a landboard but feel like I could hop on and get it on a slightly modulated surface. I just feel like I can kick it wide open on the buggy b@11s to the wall and can handle it every time. I'm sure I would bump and bruise doing the same on the landboard. After snow skiing for 30 years, I gave snowboarding a try for the first time this winter. Rode all day with it. Sure I had some butt stalls, but no high sides or caught edges the entire day. Time behind the boat over 35 years has taught me edge control and it translates across disciplines. That skill def made it easier to learn kite boarding.

BladeRunner, don't think I'll ever be taking it easier on you because you're my elder! :wow::smug::singing:

thanson2001ok - 19-4-2011 at 05:44 AM

52 and still in denial.

Skis and coyotes.

First snowboard lesson this year. No blood.:thumbup:At least on the outside that is.

Water this year.

What am I thinking?!

flyjump - 19-4-2011 at 05:48 AM

ehhh i'm only 27 but if you ride a big kite in medium to strong winds you'll float down nice and easy (for the most part!) the last week was flyguys 4th time on a board and he was already blasting 7 footers with realative ease. get a good seat harness that is nice and padded too. keep on ridin!

van - 19-4-2011 at 03:23 PM

Conclusion .. there's a lot of old farts on this forum ....hehee .. 39 and just starting to learn to landboard. Hope to be get some air by 80

kiteetik - 19-4-2011 at 06:36 PM

49 and doin it all!! im planning on hitting the water this summer or next and im not slowin down for anybody!!!!!

snowspider - 19-4-2011 at 08:00 PM

56 I've never stopped playing , though I did recognize allong the way some of this stuff is dangerous. I have started to pad up lately , its just more fun when it does'nt hurt. Recently got an ATB for my 13 year old , I stood on it once thats good enough for me , something about a low center of gravity gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Where's my buggy?

arkay - 19-4-2011 at 09:59 PM

you guys are old  But you don't look a day over 28!

Take it slow and it doesn't matter. You don't have to push yourself to just have fun. If you've ever skateboarded or surfer or snowboarded then getting on a board and just cruising will not cause you bruising. I'd wear knee pads and a helmet at a minimum, elbow and hillbilly pads are nice to have but it all depends on you comfort level.

Drewculous - 22-4-2011 at 10:46 AM

Ha! I win.... Or lose, wait....
Im 26... Woohoo!

Too bad all of you are prolly WAY better than I am lol

erratic winds - 22-4-2011 at 11:20 AM

Drew I think you're right in the middle of the pack, I know seanny and disasterdrew are both still in HS. (boy I wish kiting had been around when I was in HS!)

I'm old enough to know better and still young enough to go do it anyways.

bigkahuna - 22-4-2011 at 11:48 AM

I'm 55 going on 56, still kite landboard when I get a chance (which isn't too often I'm afraid).

Kamikuza - 23-4-2011 at 02:24 AM

Oh if you put it that way ... I'm 37 going on 13  just as my wife :o
