I have a full faced MX helmet for the buggy and MBS pads and helm for the board. The MBS didn't break the bank but are very good quality. A far as an
anemometer goes, I dont use one.

Hey man, welcome to the forum. I ATB, and what I usually wear is a ProTec skate helmet, gloves, knee pads, and ankle braces. That's all you really
need. Anything more than that and I find that movement is very restricted. Plus, I live in Texas, and when it's 108 degrees outside I don't want to be
dressed up like a marshmellow.
As for an anemometer...
Take a look at this.

Welcome!
I use this anemometer but it was cheaper on eBay - http://www.amazon.com/Ambient-Weather-HP816A-Handheld-Temper... - and now I don't use it much cos you quickly get a feel for the wind This helps too ... http://www.coastalwindsports.com/BeaufortScale.html
Protec helmet for me too, some random knee and elbow pads that I bought in a moto-cross shop ... largest size skater pads seem too small :o and wrist
wraps if I'm feeling paranoid
Hillbilly gear IIR the name C is good stuff.

I am new to power kiting also, and agree with the above, you really dont need an anemometer. Just check the weather before you go

Thos are very good for wind reports, then you will quickly get a feel for the wind and how much is to much.
I do the ATB stuff and have found these pads to be adequate, they do their job and are pretty conferable
