pissing off the fisherman OBX

markite - 31-5-2011 at 01:47 PM

debated putting this under access, bans and legal issues... one of the riders from here is part of the Best team and doing some filming and photoshoot in Hatteras right now and posted this video and comment on the forum here.

"Down in Hatteras shooting with Best kiteboarding and Adam Koch right now and getting ready for the Triple S next week.
We found an Epic spot to shoot but had abit of a problem when a drunken fisher man came by. Check it out.
Watch as everyone bails out on me while I'm laced up in my boots of a getto roof"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfdSMdapmiQ&feature=playe...

The guys have been giving him flak for thinking it was all cool and fun to trespass and thanking Best for doing their best to promote good relations

action jackson - 31-5-2011 at 01:56 PM

Looks like my new neighbors are going to find out how small Rodanthe is!Good thing it did not happen ,due to all the rusty pipes that sit below the water line in the harbor!..aj

Drewculous - 31-5-2011 at 02:46 PM

Id be pissed too..... Private property is private... They shouldn't have done that without permission

Yep, drunk or not, they should be glad the fisherman didn't come armed with a boat paddle or something really effective for trespassers.:wow:

bigkahuna - 31-5-2011 at 03:35 PM

Yet more proof that most pro kiters are egotistical morons. Jeesh.

chris - 31-5-2011 at 04:04 PM

more like drunken kiters...

Welcome to the neighborhood Best! Nothing is more endearing than trying to affect local access.

Houston AirHead - 31-5-2011 at 04:30 PM

their lucky he didnt take his old man cane out a whoop some butt

Bladerunner - 31-5-2011 at 04:43 PM

" just jump and we will photo shop it ".

Thruth in advertising Best style?

To give them their due. They were appoligizing.
Goes with the , better to ask forgiveness than permission approach?

Kamikuza - 31-5-2011 at 05:10 PM

Yeah I'm with the "just do it and don't them a chance to say no" camp too but really - they climbed on some guys shanty-shack roof? Derp. That lump of grey stuff between your ears - use it, eh.

mougl - 31-5-2011 at 06:10 PM

wow....just wow....

I have no words for this....

:mad::flaming::mad::flaming::mad:

Kites? Check! Board? Check! Camera? Check! Brains? Damn! I knew we'd forget SOMETHING!!

shaggs2riches - 31-5-2011 at 06:35 PM

This really can't be good advertising for them. What were they thinking.....probably weren't, that's a real big no no on many levels.

WELDNGOD - 31-5-2011 at 07:57 PM

not really the same as what I did. I was on a nearly desolate beach, they were on someone's personal property. I was "geurrilla kiting " on "public land" that I pay tax dollars like everyone else to use. So ,I don't feel even slightly guilty about what I did. They should.

shaggs2riches - 31-5-2011 at 08:22 PM

No, that was obviously a case of direct trespassing right there. To not get any permission before accessing that property is completely retarded. Launching and flying a kite in a public beach, that is not otherwise posted is what normal people would deem to be okay.

ripsessionkites - 31-5-2011 at 11:20 PM

way to make kitesurfing look even worse ... how stupid to even post it on YouTube. somethings are just ment to be kept private.

the Best Riders are a lot like their Best Models

shehatesmyhobbies - 1-6-2011 at 04:35 AM

Ouch that's a black eye!

bigkahuna - 1-6-2011 at 05:29 AM

Worse than simply trespassing, their actions showed a complete disregard for other people's property, something we see entirely too much now a days IMO. One of the nicest things I've run into since moving to the Banks is how polite almost all the locals are, especially in the smaller towns. This kind of behavior will do them no good here.

snowspider - 1-6-2011 at 07:31 AM

OMG that so reminds me of the kids in the back yard , the more there are of them the dumber the stunts! There is a mathematical formula that states , young men ,when brought together begin to function at the square root of there combined ages. That is a perfect example of a proven theory.

cheezycheese - 1-6-2011 at 07:43 AM

Wow... from this threads title I thought we were gonna see a bunch of fisherman peeing

bobalooie57 - 1-6-2011 at 07:53 AM

Anyone else wondering where the kite went? :puzzled: The guy tried to toss it up, but the guy on the board missed it!  I hope they had to pay to retrieve it!

you should have left it...!!

indigo_wolf - 1-6-2011 at 10:18 AM

Been trying to keep out of this thread due to it having a fairly high potentional for turning into a "horse beating session"

Yes, I did wonder. I also thought it displayed more than a little bit of questionable judgement to fling it like that, but I guess brain cells are leading the way when you have been caught doing something wrong and your primary motivation is to "beat feet" out of the area.

Just to be clear, no ire intended in your direction, but I am more than a bit reluctant to give them any due(s) of any kind.

"Down in Hatteras shooting with Best kiteboarding and Adam Koch right now and getting ready for the Triple S next week. Drunk fisherman? He didn't sound particularly drunk to me... he sounded spitting mad and rightfully so. To insinuate they he was inebriated as if somehow that color the situtation more in one's favor or that the fisherman was being unreasonable as a result of that is just gutless and weak.

Getto roof? Spelling?!? WTF? It looked like a fishing shack... the last time I checked there wasn't a whole lot of requirements for fishing shacks to be at the forefront of home decor or feng shui. Just another lame example of trying to play it like right or wrong, the line that divides it, and where you stand is a class perogative.

They didn't sound particular apologetic. They sounded like they were putting out whatever words they needed to, in whatever order was required to get them out of the situation with as little grief as possible.

There were no apologies or signs of remorse in the comments on the Youtube page for the video. The video was posted in the "Comedy" section, just so everyone else could have a good laugh at the "eccentric" behaviour of the local yokel.

Since it hasn't been mentioned already, It's illegal to film on someone else's property much less take the results and post it to Youtube. Doubly so when you are on their property illegally and haven't asked for filming rights.

My whole problem with the forgiveness/permission proposition is when the fecal matter makes contact with the rotary oscillator, the tried and true spin map for the news media is:

In combintation it makes everyone in the sport look like mindless, deathwish totin' miscreants with a blatant disregard for the general public. Last I checked, that wasn't the case, but the news media can wield a broad and sloppy paint brush just as well as anyone.

In the best of all possible worlds:

OK.... I'm done... sorry for whaling on the subject so heavily with the soapbox.

If not already painfully clear, I have a really short fuse on certain topics and a less than forgiving attitude wrt certain types of actions.... hence the original reticence about posting to this thread.

Sam

tridude - 1-6-2011 at 01:15 PM

cant imagine the Pres/CEO on the scene..................either way a huge apology and services/compensation need to be renderd and time to find a group of mature/ responsible team riders at Best.........................this isnt good press for AJ/KHK, Bigkahuna, Chris/HQ and Syuchak out on the OBX.........................well guys if things go south there we have a huge market here and we'll handle bad apples like that..........as Ive stated many times before, this is why tigers eat their young.....................................

bigkahuna - 1-6-2011 at 02:21 PM

@tridude - Not sure I'm following you, are you saying that video is bad press for the OBX? I didn't get that reaction when I watched it. My reaction was more in line with the majority here, that it was bad press for Best and their crew.

When I heard that Best was moving to the OBX I had a funny feeling it might have ended up being bad for the neighborhood. Looks like my worst suspicions were warranted.

tridude - 1-6-2011 at 02:31 PM

I could care less for Best..................hoping this doesnt reflect negatively against the 99 percent that do it right at OBX....................................

Jaymz - 1-6-2011 at 02:31 PM

Yup, Bad PR on Bests' part. Choose your riders wisely.
So what's up with their riders?!?!?!
A Best LEI rider rode over and cut my lines when my kite was down and staked in "the pits" at kiteStorm. Guys were yelling at him and he just looked back and kept riding. Geez
Lucky DoubleSpeed360 had it on video

HARD......................

Adam,

you actually have a rare gene found today...............integrity:thumbup:

not to get into a socialogical debate but this is the problem with our country/world..................doing the right thing even when no ones watching..............in SC there would have been a high probability of shotgun gun fire for trespassing like that....................

flyjump - 1-6-2011 at 04:56 PM

thanks tridude :)

strange piece of history...my great grandfather was killed with a shot gun because he was trespassing

tridude - 1-6-2011 at 05:04 PM

Im sorry to hear that Adam...................people can be very territorial (troll like)......... Im starting to wonder this might have bene staged?

markite - 1-6-2011 at 06:34 PM

no not staged. The guy on the roof is a well know sponsored rider fro Ontario - family run kiteboarding school - overall 90-95% of comments were negative when he posted the video - some guys were saying lighten up, then a discussion about the hypocrisy because if it happened here with a lesser known rider people would be all over him. He posted a follow up message saying they had beers with the fisherman and all is good - he also changed the subject line on the original post to remove the "angry drunk"
I'm in line with the comments here, especially since there is so much concern about keeping the access for kitesurfing at the beach where the school is located (from the guy that is one the roof)

Flying G Zeus - 2-6-2011 at 07:35 PM

Indigo- don't apologize, you are right. And thanks, you saved me a lot of typing. I concur.

Posting this incident on you tube goes all the way in proving the Best crew need an attitude adjustment. I think they'll get it in Hatteras! As previously mentioned, the local community isn't all that big. BTW, I love Hatteras and the locals. Where else can you hitch a ride in a wet wetsuit and feel welcome to the passenger seat?

Of course, everyone is now waiting for the pictures and poll thread.

Not sure I can pull off a dress. Summer hat with a long train is doable when barhopping in DC prior to wedding functions... generally as part of a drink bet.

Sam

Feyd - 3-6-2011 at 06:40 PM

Please don't ask Seanny what else he shaves.

shaggs2riches - 4-6-2011 at 09:54 PM

Just watching videos and couldn't help but notice how Best Kiteboarding videos really put a ton of emphasis on their Best Girls. Not that looking at babes in bikinis bothers me; but, it makes me wonder why they are the only ones who need a team of calendar girls to sell their gear. Is this the same ego that they are pushing when they choose team riders as well?????:puzzled:

bigkahuna - 5-6-2011 at 03:41 AM

@shaggs - IMO yes. While living in Hawaii I got to meet and kite with dozens of pro (and wanna be pro) kiters, and in general certain companies seem to pick riders who behave like professionals (North, Slingshot and Naish riders come to mind) while other companies tend to pick riders who behave like spoiled brats (Liquid Force and now also Best). Some years back we lost access to one beach thanks to the antics of a couple visiting LF team riders and now this video shows that Best is looking to do the same thing here in NC.

[FWIW I've edited my signature to remove the Best product name. I don't want to in any way promote a company who has no respect for the communities where they ride.]
