2012 NABX Dates?

flyguy0101 - 17-8-2011 at 05:44 AM

Trying to figure out my schedule for next spring, now that Jibe is set, Has a date for NABX been selected yet? I am thinking it is usually in April, is that correct?
Thanks
Scott

csa_deadon - 17-8-2011 at 06:28 AM

End of March, first week of April usually.
I would start watching the NABX site around October.

ripsessionkites - 17-8-2011 at 09:59 AM

its going to be another good year. travel and more trips.

after WWBB, only 6 months to go. back to NABX planning. :eureka:

deanaoxo - 11-9-2011 at 10:10 AM

Our web site does not allow us to up date the dates until November. We really want to fix that, and are working on it, but It's complicated.

Induhvidually i've been letting people know it's the 3rd of April through the 8th of next year.

AND THIS IS PROBABLY WRONG! NEWS FLASH NEWS FLASH

MOST LIKELY IT WILL BE MARCH 27TH THROUGH THE FIRST OF APRIL!!!!

This is because of the NALSA folks that have their event first and we share the tents and port a potties with.

We will be trying to get a bigger marquee next year as well(that's tent for those of you raised in the U.S.).

All sorts of good things are planned, and we will start rolling some of those out to you as the year ends.

Stay tuned, and pass the word.

Work starts now on making our 10th anniversary, and Flexi's 40th really a big deal!

aoxomoxoa~!~

Deano- I am going to go ahead and throw my hat in if you guys need some help, I would love to volunteer for my fav kite party :)

nudge - 20-9-2011 at 06:25 AM

Am gonna be coming in 2012 so you have another brit making the trek, totally lookin forward to it

bigkid - 20-9-2011 at 06:49 AM

Looking at the dates and found that NABSA is hosting the World Cup, April 5th to the 13th. They are expecting around 300 competitors world wide.
Going to be hard to decide which camp to play in.
Going to be a lot of enjoyment going on for that week :bigok:

BeamerBob - 20-9-2011 at 01:07 PM

Oh NO! NABX has stepped forward enough to match up with spring break for the kids. That would be all fine and good for me and the boys, but that's one of the few times in the year we can take a family vacation and have time to reach out and do something special as a family. nabx does not meet that definition with my wife unfortunately.

Wolfpaklv - 20-9-2011 at 03:06 PM

Any truth to the rumor of raising the prices again?

BeamerBob - 20-9-2011 at 03:08 PM

It's not a rumor. Word is $100 a person. That will sting if I'm able to bring both my boys for a hopeful Friday/Saturday.

I can't imagine the additional $25 making someone reach a decision to not come though. It IS the greatest buggy event in the world.

dman - 20-9-2011 at 05:01 PM

Still a great value for an event like that. I'd almost gladly pay that much for what I get out of it.

Wolfpaklv - 20-9-2011 at 05:08 PM

Almost!

40 minutes down the road and you worried about $25, think about us that fly in from Canada or the UK....$200 and I'll still be there......just to annoy the Aussie :wee:

flash - 21-9-2011 at 07:03 AM

yah..... 100 is totally worth it for me. Snowkite events that last 2 days cost that much or more....

Wolfpaklv - 21-9-2011 at 07:37 AM

I realize there are a lot of people that fly in. That's another reason why it would be best to stop raising the prices. The more they charge the less people will be able to afford to attend. I can afford it but there are some who can not. The fact is that we can visit the dry lake for free. And there are a lot of us that don't eat the food. Look at SOBB, there is no fee yet it is a great event. I didn't mind paying $50. But then they raised the prices last year, and now again this year and I don't understand why.

702dirtsurfer - 21-9-2011 at 09:28 AM

The first thing you are gonna hear is insurance. And YES, we do NEED insurance. Dude you can't deny that our first year out there, we were a hazard to others. Accidents happen, especially with that many people flying around each other. Also, as locals we don't see that many kites in the air routinely, many of these riders do. I suspect the insurance is MORE beneficial to us locals than anyone else, especially in the long term usage of Ivanpah.

My daddy said it's much easier to improve someone else's system than to create your own, duh!

As a local I am perfectly fine with the participant price. I thought the guest fee was a little pricey, I had a lot of friends who could only come out for a few hours to see what its all about, but not for $50. For you non locals, try to understand that its not just an extra $25 for a drive we can make supposedly anytime. I hate hearing that. Do you go to the beach anytime in LA?? NABX is a vacation for most and something we locals try to cram into our everyday busy lives. Lets all wear our empathy suits for this....

Is it possible to work out a "basic" package entry for those who just want to ride and thats it? It's not crazy to think with as fast as NABX is growing, the volunteer pace could be outdone by the sheer volume of people in some years down the road. Selling those who just want insurance with no frills (numbers, food, access to main tent, races, etc) just that will ease some work on the volunteers??? Just putting ideas into the universe

702dirtsurfer - 21-9-2011 at 10:21 AM

Forgot to mention port a potty rental in the basic discussion. BTW, for the record I payed the participant fee and guest fee for my lady and I last year and even though we missed most meals, we still felt like the mugs, beer, insurance, restrooms, etc were worth the money and I have no doubt it will again this year.

Let's also realize asking for basic packages is asking NABX to cater to a pretty minority share of interests and they have plenty on their plate. The burden of change is on those who ask for it. See if you can petition enough interests in a basic package and present it to NABX.

The Aussie said something about you being a "snooky man" and he could eat you for breakfast. Ok, I added that last part myself. :saint::smug:

Back on topic, I know I'm quite the minority by bringing not just 1 son but my younger son is also on tap to come in 2012, but in sports leagues, there is a discount for registrations after the primary. IE. Registrant 2 and 3 are less than the primary, as in $100 for me, $75 for my first son and maybe $50 or 60 for the third. You can look at it like that would be $225 instead of $300. Or on the other end, is it $100 instead of $300 for someone out there. My 2 sons won't take advantage of much of the opportunity to be there, but they will probably need the portaloos (UK lingo) and might get to eat a dinner or 2, but won't leave with a mug or drink any of the beer. Again, its a new process for the organizers to work around and I'm sure any effort towards working with this issue looks like less money in the coffers.

None of this affects my choices of attending and I'm sure I'll provide some volunteer effort for the event since I'm "on location". When you're heading home from the event, the additional $25 isn't going to be what you are thinking about.

There, clear as mud now........;-)

Donaldgould - 21-9-2011 at 12:22 PM

Well NABX is out for me:( $300 is alot when work is slow . And the food is not that good and then they have no trash cans for you to use .

Donnie, you have family that you bring out? My $300 figure is for me and my 2 sons.

I'm ok with the garbage thing. No one else should have to haul my garbage out.

Wolfpaklv - 21-9-2011 at 01:38 PM

Its not about the garbage. How much do you pay at Sobb? The correct answer btw is not nothing! You pay for what you use. You donate in the jar according to how much food you eat and conribute for the porto potty.

So true. Someone else should pick up our trash!

Lets think of some other things that they should do. Like wipe our butts?

Heaven forbid we clean up after ourselves...

Hmm, from what you wrote it doesn't sound like nothing. Sounds like there are things to pay for, and people pay. How is that different from Nabx?

Nabx has an entrance fee because of many things need to be paid for. I'm sure Dean will be on here to list them out. I can think of some: porta potties, the big tent, insurance, blm fee, supplies for numbers and ID tags, storage rental fee for all the gear, and did I mention insurance? Not to mention the helicopter rides from the airport...

Some people have attended in the past without paying. Last year it took this forum to shame them into paying if they were going to attend. And even after shaming them, there were still people on this forum who would buy product from them. Yikes, all of us don't have the same values (even very high ones). Hope we don't have to go through that again...

dman - 21-9-2011 at 04:03 PM

I for one liked the food and appreciated the fact that I could kite, drink and screw off all day and come in for food just about any time I felt like it.

I still say for what you get out of it weather your participate in all or some, it's a whole lot of value for the dollar.

BeamerBob - 21-9-2011 at 04:07 PM

I must take a stand on the food myself. I thought it was awesome every meal I got both this past year and the year before. Not just grub to fill your gut, but really good tasting food.

Wolfpaklv - 21-9-2011 at 04:50 PM

Where did the helicopter rides come from?

And What is so different from last year to cause a 30% increase? I'm not saying I don't think we should have to pay something. But why has the price doubled over 2 year? The first time it was due to the bathrooms leaking which personally I would have gone after the company that provided them. What now?

You are joking ??

I'm not going to attend the #1 kiting event in North America because I don't like the chairs and have to pay for ice!

The Helicopter from the airport is a nice touch though! ;-)

nocando - 21-9-2011 at 07:27 PM

Hey Boyza I would pay 300$ just to have the opportunity to play verbal tennis with you:bouncy::bouncy::bouncy:

kiteboyza - 21-9-2011 at 07:33 PM

for me

Food was good
I could store my buggy
I had ice when needed
I got a t-shirt, a watch, NABX patch and other stuff
I got to hang with all nations of the world and annoy the Aussie
I got a brilliant suntan
I met some great folk
I kited

It cost me $600 for a flight, $120 for my excess weight, $300 for a car, $170 for hotel, lots spent on drinks and gambling.

Would I do it again, Feck yeah!

Donaldgould - 21-9-2011 at 08:51 PM

you know NABX is fun you get to buggy with new people and see old frineds ( thats cool ) i will pay for that . and i bring up trash can why me and my two kids they were 5 picked up trash for two hours next day . now you ask why i picked up the trash because i live here what SOME people leave behind i have to see all year . so if they had some cans there would less for us that care to clean up and more time for to do what we go for having fun .

I just wanted to make sure everyone knows that the above comments are not about myself or our shop A Wind Of Change Kites. We are a proud sponsor of the NABX event and have been sponsoring this event for the last 10 years.

Again just want to make sure this is clear to everyone as I know how rumors and talk gets spread around.

Buggy On!

Earlier this year I was Ranting to Dean about how the airline prices had gone up....and the reduction in the weight carried....and yarda...yarda!

So Dean's reply was "If you think that the NABX is worth it , you will come....if you don't.....shut up Walt"

I have to agree! If this event is Really worth the effort....then you will do whatever to get here.

I will be making the effort....I will pledge my allegence to the NABX clan.....I look forward to seeing all my friends and making new ones.

End of story!

heliboy50 - 22-9-2011 at 12:23 AM

Last year was the first year my other half and I went to any of the dinners, I would say well worth the cost of admission. My only tweak was that she didn't get a t-shirt with a guest registration. She was bummed. We are both looking forward to '12.

csa_deadon - 22-9-2011 at 04:29 AM

How much fun can one person have in the desert?

Lets see. First year I attended '10 I wrapped a pickup in pink, oh yea "carma" got back at me and wrapped my buggy in brand new lines!!!

In '11 I was threatened with physical violence if I tried to put the Pink Super Ozzy cape on Ozzy again!
Attempted to get Dino to sing Karaoke "Mary had a little lamb." didn't really work out. Yet!
Spiked Rip's already spiked drink at the last dinner.

So as I see it each year the price goes up, I just have to attempt to have more fun. Hopefully at Rip's expense!:lol:

How much fun can I have in '12?

Bladerunner - 22-9-2011 at 06:39 AM

I met AJ at NABX !

PRICELESS !!!!!

:saint:

Meeting and firming up brotherhood among my PKF family is what makes NABX priceless to me for SURE !

greasehopper - 22-9-2011 at 06:40 AM

Ya know, if I didn't know better, I'ld swear this thread has gone retrograde.

There's no reason to poke holes in an otherwise stable boat. Outside of Bob's "family plan" point with the "minor" lads, it's all a matter of priorities, values and personal choices. Personally, I need a little "Bohemia" in my life once in a while so it's entirely worth the price I pay.

Doesn't matter what your affliction, if you wanna play, you're gonna pay.
For some, that's a little, for most, that's A LOT !

For those of us on this side of the pond it's almost ludicrous to consider a $100 fee as excessive. Playing at Butter Cup Sand Dunes in Imperial County, CA. is a $150 bill weekend before you get out of the driveway. A trip to the Colorado River for a bass tournament is a $200 per day bill before you get a line wet. Sleepin' in the dirt on Stewart Island is a $3000 adventure even if you book way in advance and take advantage of the hostels and trekker's cabins. In fact, I'm 6 hours away from 5 of the nicest dry lakes on the planet and it's still a $100 weekend for me even if I sleep in the dirt.

If you're considering letting $25 stand between you and the camaraderie of the most wonderful and entertaining folks on the planet, maybe money plays a bigger role in your life than you're prepared to admit.

So sorry i have not heard about this. Of course she gets a t-shirt! The whole t-shirt thing has broken down the last two years. No excuses, it's our bad. We are fixing it i promise.

This is not a back handed admonishment but please, register at least 30 days prior to the event. We had lots of late registration, and guessing what sizes for those registrants is not our forte.

Contact me deanjordan at g mail dot com and let's get the t-shirt thing sorted.

I don't understand $300. What's that price for?

The food is not that good? Srsly? uh, could you elaborate?

YES, we have no trash cans.

Think about this for a moment.

When we inherited the event 9 years ago, there was a huge trash problem(we may still be picking up that trash).

It took us years to remove the trash cans as that was a mind set that the land sailors had. We solved it by refusing to pay, voila no dumpster-no trash cans. (BTW, biggest problem we ever had with BLM, with fines and warnings every year. Since we go last, guess who got blamed for all excess trash?)

It's a Leave No Trace concept.

Pack it in, pack it out.

It works. Try it. Be responsible for what you bring. Think about what you use and what you throw away.

NABX is a lot of things, but we will never be your Mom.

I'm an idiot damn.

So sorry!

HEY DEAN IT'S OKAY TO SHOUT!!!
But I do have some things that need to be changed about NABX this year.

*First and foremost, you are not allowed to find yourself in need of any sort of medical care within a week of the event, or during the event.

*Secondly, I will only buy raffle tix if I am told to #@%$#! myself out to get other people to buy them. If this means Nina and I on the tables in tutu's and corsets so be it. This last year I gave kisses and ass squeezes. I will only do this again for those that buy tickets! Plus this year, I am hoping I can break my two year trend of having the only ticket of mine that is drawn be for an HQ item :)

*Thirdly, i demand that if you need help you use and abuse my services.

That is all, I anxiously await seeing if the NABX committee will cater to my demands :) love ya guys!!!!!

BeamerBob - 23-9-2011 at 08:31 AM

So are we sure of the dates, Dean? I got to schedule at least 3 weeks for everything I am involved with and that makes about 5 weeks away from home. Just trying to get the wife to agree with me being gone for so long(she misses me from time to time).:puzzled:

Keep up the great work Dean, we all are greatly appreciative of your efforts and I will be happy to help out again this year.

I can drive the whole way but gas money would be greatly appreciated. ANYONE IN THE CENTRAL US NEED A RIDE. LOL. I have a couple of potential people right now but they aren't 100% sure if they are going yet.
