Msg sent to him..

lamrith - 29-10-2011 at 01:22 PM

removing comment after phone call with seller. Very cool guy..

lamrith - 29-10-2011 at 01:23 PM

My response to his email was within 1-2min of his reply..

Samm - 29-10-2011 at 01:23 PM

I contacted him too.. looks like three have so far. I dont want to make this into an auction and raise the price for everyone. So i think we should discuss who'll take it for $175? I dont really need the kite.. would be nice of course..
What about you lamrith?

Samm - 29-10-2011 at 01:32 PM

I dont know who the third guy is, but i think you messaged him a few minutes before me.. so you have my withdraw.

arkay - 29-10-2011 at 01:38 PM

postings on ikitesurf are usually questionable

lamrith - 29-10-2011 at 01:41 PM

I edited my comment.. I just spoke with him on phone and looks like we have the deal done. I should have a paypal invoice shortly. He did stay with the advertised amount.

He said that he has been hammered with over 30 email since this post was put up. people must know a way to get his email addy without using the ikitesurf form, so not only 4 of us responded..

He is actually a pretty nice guy now that I spoke with him.

lamrith - 29-10-2011 at 01:42 PM

Ohh and Sam, I appreciate that. This will be my largest kite and my 1st depower, so really jazzed if all goes thru!

Samm - 29-10-2011 at 01:47 PM

Awesome! Hahahaha yeah Arcs get eaten up on this forum.. I've been trying to pick one up without killing my budget forever now, but always get beaten to it.
Just keep me in mind if its not your kind of kite ;)

lamrith - 29-10-2011 at 01:48 PM

You got it!

dman - 29-10-2011 at 03:09 PM

I think this is the same one I tried to pickup here on a local forum for sale thread for $50. I messaged him minutes after his post early in the morning and he came back with some BS about many people in front of me with dibs. I think he realized he was letting go too cheap.

dave brown - 29-10-2011 at 03:30 PM

I was the first guy..I sent him a message 3 days ago..
Sent me pics and a shipping quote.. I said I will take it
I was about to send him the Paypal and it was sold out from under me

I didn't need it anyways but what a deal

tridude - 29-10-2011 at 04:18 PM

thats quite the deal...............I have alot of success on deals but none this good

dandre - 29-10-2011 at 07:15 PM

Lamrith=big leauges

tridude - 29-10-2011 at 07:29 PM

it would appear so..................

lamrith - 29-10-2011 at 07:59 PM

Just right place, right time on this one. and not care about Jacking CC a bit more for a deal like this..

I did recieve a tracking number on it, should be here Wed. WOOT!!:wee:

Bigbear97e - 30-10-2011 at 09:51 AM

Lamrith .... hope the deal comes through for you ... big kite for 1st depower ... be cautious, but enjoy .... this coming from a guy who recently had a pretty good feed of sod behind his 4.5 ace ....lol..... guess my Drewculous wind scale needs calibration .... thought it was epic, but after a belly scud started to think maybe it was stupid.....lol:lol:

lamrith - 30-10-2011 at 10:24 AM

Bigbear - I do appreciate the warning. I am sure when I roll this monster out the 1st few times I will get a hefty case of the puckers!

Thankfully I have a couple things going for me, winds are traditionally weak here, 5mph typically, occaisional 10mph days and a rare few 10-20. I have a few smaller FB rigs for those high wind days.

AND my buddy Ken has a Pulse 7m on it's way already so I can try depower on a much smaller rig 1st THANKS BLADE!!:Ange09::thumbup:

Hrmm.. Seems we have a kite race on already.. I live in WA, the Pulse was shipped Tues via USPS, from a location in Canada 5hrs drive away. The Venom shipped yesterday from UT via UPS Ground.. Which will I see 1st?:dunno:

bigkid - 30-10-2011 at 10:45 AM

Customs takes 3 to 5 days, my money is on Utah.

AD72 - 30-10-2011 at 10:48 AM

Lamrith - I recommend getting a pre-inflator. Either build one from a PC fan and tubing or get a battery powered leaf blower. It will decrease your frustration trying to get the monster to fly. Completely inflate the beast and you won't have to deal with bow tie and botched launches at low wind causing line tangles.

lamrith - 30-10-2011 at 10:52 AM

Bigkid - yeah me too! I found it funny that it left Vancouver and went.. TO San fransisco!? It will have traveled probably 6x the distance required when it gets here.. I can only assum SF is the regional customs hub for USPS?

Yeah Thanks AD. I woke up thinking that exact thing this am.. Perk of being a PC nerd, I got fans laying around, even have a few from old school Xbox. just need to fashion up the battery/electrics for it. Onc eI get the kite inhand I can start working on it.

Bladerunner - 30-10-2011 at 11:03 AM

I had a good deal selling on iktesurf on a 7m Speed with a straight up local buyer but Spam offers followed for years after.

Now you need to use your powers from the " arc side " to convince the wife this was 1/2 as good a deal as we all know it was ! ;)

lamrith - 30-10-2011 at 11:19 AM

Blade - Better for right now to just hide it in the huge Duffel bag with the rest of my quiver!:cool2:

Yup, it's interesting to track parcels .... bought a helmet, gloves, knee and elbow pads from a place in Cailfornia... package went to San Francisco to Nashville to Toronto to Winnipeg to Vancouver to Prince George and then Houston.... not bad though .... 6 days from paypal to delivery

lamrith - 31-10-2011 at 09:57 AM

Well the Canadian USPS shipment won! Just landed on my desk.. Always funny.. 8:00am this am the last status shown is SF on 25th..

Then now that it is inhand, it shows a hit here locally @6am:wee: :-p

bigkid - 31-10-2011 at 11:00 AM

San Francisco is the Customs Depot:crazy:

Happyness is...

lamrith - 2-11-2011 at 11:00 AM

A 15lb box of crispy ripstop being delivered to your desk by your shipping Dept..:wee::singing:

Is it time to go home yet?

How about now..?:puzzled:

Now?:mad::ticking:

Bigbear97e - 2-11-2011 at 04:13 PM

Glad to hear that deal came through .... wind? wind?

lamrith - 2-11-2011 at 06:26 PM

Thanks bigbear, unfortunately it is not all candy and cake :-/

This kite is NOT R2F as the seller represented. I asked him specifically when I emailed him does it need repair, is it R2F. Due to the low price, I am really torn on challenging him on it or not. If it had been as represented I would have gotten an INSANE deal as attested by the 30 people the emailed after I did. At the same time, I have a kite that I DO need to spend money on before I can ever fly it... I would really like opninions/thoughts from you experienced guys. You can U2U if you would rather make comments privately.

So I went to a local elementary school on the way home and opened it all up fully.

Issue #1: Some people may have seen my other thread about chicken loop. This kite did not come with one at all, I assumed that when a kite is listed as complete, kite, bar, lines that it will include a chicken loop. I further asked the seller on the phone "So this kite is ready to fly?" and got a yes reply.. Ready to fly imho means ready to connect to a harness and go...

Issue #2: kite feels nice and crisp when I unrolled it, some minor sand dirt, but I was very happy with it. Colors are vibrant. Top side looks good, no issues I can see, no visible repairs. I flipped it over and gave the bottom a once over.. almost immediately I found a failed seam/tear/rip. Talk about bummed. It is not very big, but the thread has failed and is coming out of the kite and right in the middle of that there is a hole.

I really want to hear everytones thougths on this.. Been a bit disheartening to open new toys and find they are "busted" so you can't play with them.. of course the wind was gusting as soon as I had the kite layed full out.. totally could have flown if not for the high tension main power lines right over me...

g00fba11 - 2-11-2011 at 06:37 PM

if you can look on the inside of the kite through the inflate or deflate and see if there is any detachment from the rib or not..... from the pic it looks like it is right above the strap that runs through the kite.

I had a small one like this in one of my arcs. It was right above the strap..... I figured it was from strap wear on the inside???? I checked the inside and there was no separation of the rib seam, the hole was right above the strap.......

I slapped a piece of tear aid on the inside and the outside and called it good...... have had no issues with the repair or the kite......

I think that repair is going to be much easier to deal with than getting that bar going......

lamrith - 2-11-2011 at 07:05 PM

hrmmm Interesting thought G00f. You can see the adjuster strap right there under my hand.. I was just not sure if I should take it someplace to have that thread fixed?

The tear as you can see is RIGHT on the sew line, but I am also worried about that thread continuing to undo once I inflate and start stressing the kite..

stetson05 - 2-11-2011 at 07:14 PM

I recommend you send it to powerzone. He might be able to help with the chicken loop issues too.

lamrith - 2-11-2011 at 07:19 PM

He is up in Seattle I think? Does he have a website/email I can contact him thru?

g00fba11 - 2-11-2011 at 07:22 PM

I tried to get a picture but you can't see anything..... tear aid is clear and it just doesn't show up......

tear aid is some tuff stuff...... the repair I did was right on the sew line and was about the same as yours..... I popped a piece of tear aid on both sides..... I added about 2 inches in length to the outside patch to keep the thread from pulling out more......

I have only flown the kite 3 times since I did the patch job..... but it shows no sign of pulling apart..... I am anxious to see how it holds up in the snow.....

another thought..... I don't know how close to John at http://www.powerzonekitesports.com/home/ ..... I hear he does some bang up repair jobs...... I have a kite I have been planning on sending to him for a repair..... I just haven't been in a hurry because I have plenty to fly......

just a thought on the patch job..... tear aid worked for me..... I keep that and a roll of clear rip stop tape in my bag just in case......

One thing that I didn't try that I thought of after I did the patch job..... a couple of drops of http://www.kitebuilder.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/19... before I applied the tear aid just to keep the threads in place......

lamrith - 2-11-2011 at 08:03 PM

I just sent a contact form to powerzone. We will see what he says, probably help me with the bar/CL as well..

Bigbear97e - 2-11-2011 at 08:19 PM

Hopefully the repair doesn't set you back too much ... would hate to hear you banished to the garage with a ripstop blanket... :P

While not up to par with some of you, I could have quite a warm blanket arrangement with all the ripstop in my car trunk now!

markite - 2-11-2011 at 08:46 PM

for the outer skin the panels overlap each other much in the same way as shingles overlap on a roof (going left and right across the kite), and that overlap is about 10mm and has double sided tape applied to seal the two panels together. The rib is then stitched to the outer skin with a straight line stitch right down the centre of that overlap. From the stitch on the rib there is a about 5mm of material that sticks out beyond that stitch to the edge of the rib material. This bit is not taped down to the outer skin.

When a rib has a pressure tear it often pulls away from the outer skin and it could either leave the stitch in the outer skin and it pulls that small edge of rib material through the stitch (shreds it) or it tears the rib off along the stitch or the rib stays intact and pulls the stitch through from the outer skin resulting in a slit down the middle of the overlap.
The tear often runs along the rib and goes from somewhere within the middle of the rib out to the edge.

There are straps that run lateral inside the kite and in some places they are stitched in place when the rib/webbing strap and outer skin are sewn together. There are other parts of the kite where that strap floats so there is a gap where the rib is not sewn to the outer skin. The rib is stitched to outer skin along the length but a small gap the width of the webbing allows the strap to move. There is a stitch that still runs along the outer skin where that rib leaves a gap and there is a small reinforcing dacron d.s. taped and also held in with the stitching above and below that gap to strengthen and take abrasion.

It looks like you have a small wear from a floating strap and as noted you could simply put a small piece of repair tape and a small dacron patch for strength. Because it has split the overlap you could put a small stitch around it but you don't want a lot of extra stitching because it also perforates nylon and you there is a point where it strengthens and a point where it weakens. Certainly taping adds strength and air tight.

Because kites incorporate double sided tape in construction there is always going to be small amounts of sand or dirt that stick to exposed sticky edges as soon as you lay out a new kite and use it and some types of seams also tend to hold small bits of sand trapped so white seams or hems will look dirty with very little use.

Powerzone is good and should be able to take care of you. It's a fairly small thing but always good to catch before it gets bigger.

lamrith - 2-11-2011 at 08:52 PM

Thanks Mark!

Yeah I have to say this kite is crisp and sharp overall. It is used, but not abused by any means.. The seams look pretty good and I have a feeling he mostly used it on snow? (He is in UT) Zippers worked ok, a hair stiff, but all functioned fine.

The wind was gusting once I got it laid out and I SOOOO want to fill and launch her, but the tear, odd bar set-up and more importantly overhead High tension power distribution lines made me think better and call it a day..

lamrith - 3-11-2011 at 11:42 AM

Thanks to all that recommended John @ powerkite sports. I just got off the phone with him and we are going to hook up to get it repaired. Very nice guy, easy to talk/work with..

lamrith - 3-11-2011 at 09:01 PM

Got a reply from the seller. he insists there was no tear or dmg when he shipped it, said he woudl file a ups claim if I wanted. Problem is I know there is no way UPS caused the damage. Inside a fully rolled up kite, inside a heavy bag, inside an undamaged box... And the package was only insured for $100, base repair is $40 and looking at it closely tonight it looks like there may be a internal rib involved which shoots the labor time up.. Pretty sure if they pay the $100 they get to keep the contents of the package..? Not willing to take that trade-off :-p That said the seller has said to let him know what the repair cost comes to, he is not running away from it or giving me a cold shoulder..

For the loop he thought I knew what an older windwing bar meant. Bad assumption on both our parts, but he gave me a brief overview and basically it works much the same as a strop. You just loop the rope under the hook and off you go. I will write up more in my chicken loop thread since it has bearing on that conversation...

markite - 3-11-2011 at 09:17 PM

The location and size of that split would be hard to see unless looking over the entire kite carefully and pulling spreading material - I can see it being easily missed. Sounds like you both have a good communication going. If you had experience it's a small fix, more of a hassle for you in cost to ship plus the work involved. Even with the cost of repair it's a good price on the kite and maybe he'll split the cost with you? The bar ahhh I guess, I've seen a lot of thrown together pieces of crap just for the sake of including a bar and maybe some sellers aren't even aware that they are selling crap just passing along something that frustrated them. Not saying it's crap, sounds like it'll work but personally I'd make a few changes.
But keep it all on the positive side, everything just adds to your learning one way or another.

lamrith - 4-11-2011 at 10:03 AM

Mark - very true

Yeah looking at the pict he took of it inflated it might have been hidden in a crease.. The hangin thread is what drew my eye when I layed the kite out uninflated. I usually do a full check if I am selling or buying something so I can make sure a listing is accurate.

This bar is not great, but G00f sent me out a proper CL and line today, once it lands I will rebuild and clean things up. Bar is nothing fancy, but it will work to get started!

Ohh it is all about learning!! Very glad you guys are all so patient with my non-stop questions!!

CL is on its way USPS priority mail.....

I still have not gotten a chance to fly this badboy.. The New Kite curse is in FULL effect!
:eekdrull:

pongnut - 10-2-2012 at 12:31 PM

Me thinks a trip to the bean and broccoli bar followed by a toe-side launch should take care of that curse...
