SOLD: Mac Bego

slothart - 4-3-2012 at 10:15 AM

Cleaning house... I get to kite about once a year these days, if I am lucky, and this kit deserves to be used. Keeping my low aspect ratio Ozone Kites as those are easy to use for someone way out of practice, but have decided to part with my Begos that take a bit more technique to fly safely and well.

WOW.... that's a beauty...... if it wasn't for NABX just around the corner I would be spending some money.....

Hey.... I got an idea..... maybe you should add a survey to your sale...... it seems to be giving thanson2001ok quite a bit of attention!!!!

Anyway..... great looking kite..... I'm jelly!!!!

mougl - 4-3-2012 at 12:43 PM

Omg....gorgeous bego!!!

B-Roc - 4-3-2012 at 12:51 PM

That was the best bego color scheme, hands down.

slothart - 4-3-2012 at 01:12 PM

Thanks ya'll... I got very lucky when i bought these... both my 400 and 600 had the gold, black and red color scheme

mougl - 4-3-2012 at 01:34 PM

Thing looks new! Someone is going to score a sweet deal here!

Goof, pull the trigger bro! This is one kite you don't want to slip away. On smooth wind days I fly my 600 and all I can say is WOW! Gets you rolling pretty fast in some pretty light wind. Turns easily with not too much input, and when u want to turn fast, it does turn on a wingtip. Easily one of the best kites I have owned!

g00fba11 - 4-3-2012 at 02:21 PM

mougl, man I want to..... but it comes down to the Bego or NABX....... just can't do it...... I don't know what I would let go in my quiver to get this.....

besides my arcs would get jelly.... and there is that new P2 24m on the horizon......

Well..... gotta quit looking at this thing before I spend my dough......

Beautiful kite....... hey.... didn't beamerbob say he wanted to go fast???? at least with this kite he'd be trying in grand style....... I think he should buy it......

mougl - 4-3-2012 at 02:23 PM

Someone needs to buy this so I don't have to justify to Sheska why I own 2 Bego 600s...

g00fba11 - 4-3-2012 at 02:24 PM

HAHAHAHAHA.......

remove the temptation mougl.........

you will be like royalty flying this on the beach!!!!

I hear foot steps........

clocks ticking!!!!

great pic.................nice lightweight ripstop..................you can see the cell walls thru the skin. Take a look at the intakes. They are full open via being reinforced with stiffners to allow for early on and smooth air flow into the cells..................cross vent ports are well done......paraglider quality incorporated throughout...........hard to beat. I needed a four meter kite to round out my FB buggy quiv (boughthis 400) or I would have snagged this one.................dont let this package slip away:lol::lol::duh:

I can't believe this is still here. Bego 600 is like a little slice of heaven

Time to pour some gas on the fire

(Short review and some outdoor pics to fully highlight the color scheme, which is the same as the one that is up for sale).

I think this http://www.racekites.com/2007/09/2034/ is a great review. Its of a 400 but they fly the same - just in different winds. Begos are unusual kites, but IMO they were ahead of their time and still very viable.

tridude - 8-3-2012 at 04:52 PM

picked up the 400 today..................this kite is almost new, maybe 3 to 5 flights..................the whole RTF package is cherry!

slothart - 8-3-2012 at 05:36 PM

It's been flown a bit more than that. :)
Happy to hear it made to you safely.

I take care of equipment as best I can... and I will say, the 400 saw more use than the 600.

B-Roc - 8-3-2012 at 06:34 PM

What color scheme was the 400?

tridude - 8-3-2012 at 07:01 PM

same as his 600...............

Slo you do take care of your equipment...................the whole package mint cherry/.....................dont let his 600 get away folks..................the 400 completed my FB buggy quiver:thumbup:

mougl - 8-3-2012 at 07:36 PM

I still can't believe this has not sold. Folks, it doesn't get much better than this for an all arounder...

slothart - 11-3-2012 at 11:59 AM

Heading out of town this coming Friday for a week. I can ship a Paypal purchase out before I go; otherwise, I'll check back in here when I get back.

soliver - 11-3-2012 at 09:05 PM

Just curious,... the "600", is that 600 cm,... does that mean it is equivalent to a 6m kite?

In other words what size is this?

tridude - 11-3-2012 at 10:31 PM

correct mi amigo....................great low wind 6m sail.................you have the skillz to handle this kite. Lift is there if and when you need it or you can dial it out if you want to stay grounded.....................Mac Para quality is right there with the big boyz (FS, Peter Lynn, Ozone, Flexi)........

slothart - 12-3-2012 at 08:23 AM

Yep, as Tridude said... 6m.

To get the best performance out of the bego they need to be flown with a bit of break applied which is the learning curve with the kite. My 600 is power ringed, which helps with this too.

A good trick when first learning this kite is to fly with the handles held horizontally like they are a bar so the bottom end of the handles extend out to either side which keeps a light constant tension on the brake lines

Bigbear97e - 12-3-2012 at 08:44 AM

I bet for its size, this kite pulls like a truck ... the projected area of the Mac Bego 600 is very very close to that of a 6.8m ViperS

B-Roc - 12-3-2012 at 09:13 AM

Begos are very flat kites which means they project almost their entire sail to the wind. When they are staked out on the ground this will become very apparent.

You will be hard pressed to find any 6 or 4 meter kite that pulls harder than a 600 or 400. When they were more available, they were known to be the hardest pulling kites of their size.

As an owner of both a 600 and 400, I totally agree with that statement.

I sold my 7mm JOJO ET Instinct and my 8.5 Blade III after buying my 600. The 600 had better upwind ability and was faster then both and had a better low end then the 8.5 because it was lighter and faster.

They aren't that tough to fly. If you can fly foils and can't figure these out in 5 minutes then you are doing something wrong. I gave my 600 to a blade IV buggy rider and he took it for a spin with no issues, no learning curve, no crashes and no backstalls. He commented that it was one of the best kites he ever flew on a first attempt.

It's in good hands  you still coming to JIBE?

lad - 12-3-2012 at 09:58 AM

I really hope I'll be there (If I can afford it now)

I'd come w/ Phull Phanny quiver in tow, for those who want to compare!

mougl - 13-3-2012 at 09:15 AM

For those in doubt....Just got home from a session that I started with a Bego 600. Wind was 8ish mph...was practicing 2 wheeling...

Wind picked up and the Bego went back in its bag. Epic low wing engine here!

As much as I might love to have more stuff, I have to put the kybosh on buying... (wifey looked at me cross eyed after she saw the price of the new bug)... I'll be in the market for a 4m-ish something come fall though,... so its good to be aware of a contender. (guessing the 400 then is near 4m + or -)

Thanks for the info, really I was just curious, and being a newby, I am only familiar with measures in meters for kites (funny thing for an American carpenter).

mougl - 17-3-2012 at 05:20 PM

Bump for an AWESOME kite! I'm half tempted to sell mine and scoop this up! LOVE the colors!

Rabbit - 22-3-2012 at 10:08 AM

I am interested in your Bego 600. U2U sent.

I am looking for a light wind (1 – 6 mph) kite for scudding and landboarding with more pull than a Crossfire I 4m. According to the wind chart at http://older.macpara.com/kites/kites.html, the Bego 400 would probably give me a better wind range for my weight of 135 lbs. Nonetheless, all the posts make this Bego 600 seem like it is something worth considering. Can any of you experienced Bego fliers comment on the accuracy of the wind chart? Thanks.

mougl - 22-3-2012 at 11:30 AM

For whatever reason I can't view the chart but what I can tell you is this: the 600 will fly in almost no wind at all. I have launched in a breeze that had dragonflies buzzing around without issue and in the buggy I've been moving in grass in 5mph wind. Keep in mind I'm about 210 pounds and I am using extra wide tires.

Flying static I have found that this kite started to develop power in 3-4 mph wind. From my experience, the Bego likes to be kept busy in the air. I keep mine moving when flying static as well as in the buggy. It's a very fast turning kite for its size. It will turn on a wingtip with the proper input from handle and brake.

I love my Bego for low wind days

B-Roc - 22-3-2012 at 11:43 AM

I weigh 150#s and have a 400 and 600. If skied with the 600 in measured 4mph winds (but it was a fast / ideal surface with smooth, steady winds). I've used it kite landboarding in under 7mph when the flag was just barely blowing. It can become a handful for me when the wind starts pushing 10 (especially if the wind isn't smooth).

There is no magic bullet for no wind days. The bego is excellent at creating and flying in apparent wind but if there is no wind then there is no wind and it won't fly unless you want to run around and pump your arms like crazy. You won't be scudding at 1 mph. If the wind is a constant 4 and you can turn it through the center of the window, you probably can scud. Low wind flying really is dependant on wind quality.

Lulls to 6 = crap flying with the kite pulling then collapsing in the lulls. A steady 3 - 6 mph wind makes a huge difference and the bego will capitalize on that difference. But if the wind drops to nearly nothing, the kite isn't going to stay in the air without significant effort on your part.

Rabbit - 22-3-2012 at 06:05 PM

Thank you mougl and B-Roc for your responses. I had a comma in the link I posted, here it is corrected - http://older.macpara.com/kites/kites.html

mougl - 22-3-2012 at 06:09 PM

I'd say thats pretty accurate. Like Roc said, smooth, constant wind is essential.

Beaudryjoel - 22-3-2012 at 09:22 PM

how crazy is this wing to fly- i am getting started, i have a HQ Apex 5m depower and a 2m trainer.
just picked up a bug and want to add to the quiver.
keep reading that the Bego is quite the sail but want to know if its out of my league.
any advice?

lad - 22-3-2012 at 09:28 PM

It's not really for people just starting out!

mougl - 22-3-2012 at 09:31 PM

Agree with lad here. Not for beginners. Check your u2u :)

B-Roc - 23-3-2012 at 06:04 AM

Begos are unique kites, IMO. Given when they were designed, they really have some of the rawness of the blade III series with the speed and upwind abilities of a race kite. The race kite cross breeding smoothes out some of the lift from the blade like cross breeding. The begos are, by far, the fastest kites I've ever owned. The first time on skis with the 4m I was FLYING, hit the brakes to back it away from the edge and it was like I down shifted and then stomped on the gas. The thing took off. For a while I didn't know how I was ever going to redirect it and stay on the ground. When they get going, they really get going. When they get going and the wind gets punchy, you really feel it. Not that the kite is likely to collapse but it keeps down shifting and accelerating and you need to know how to ride that out.

If you are a beginner and this scares you, pass on the kite because I am not exaggerating in the slightest. However, if you use your head, go out in low wind and build your confidence and understanding of how to fly this kite then you can learn on it and should buy it. I learned on a 8.5 blade III. Wasn't the smartest thing to do but if you respect the kite and the wind, you can do it.

They do have insane A/Rs so if you are flying in crap, turbulent wind then you will not enjoy these kites. However, if you ride in relatively smooth winds and you want something that is FUN to fly, has great speed, and great lift when you want it, begos really can't be beat. They'll teach you how to fly on the brakes and really feather your control for ultimate response. Kind of like flying a Rev. My 400 is the most fun foil I own to fly because of how it dances on the brakes and can pinwheel on a dime turning around its own wingtips. The 600 is fun too but I'm not a big fan of pumping and running so its more a light wind weapon for me then something I'd break out to static fly.

Just got back home this evening and have a backlog of emails, etc to go through... I'll get replies out to everyone by tomorrow at the latest.

P.S. snuck an LD and my samurai into a suitcase in the hope to do some static flying and scudding while I was out of town... manage to get a few hours to myself and found a safe stretch to fly on with a fairly steady wind.... :D I reeeaaallllyyyyyy miss being able to fly kites regularly.
