Sunset Beach weekend of Nov 10

buggeyed - 23-10-2012 at 09:50 AM

I am thinking of making one last trip to Sunset Beach for the year.Tides should be low for a good part of the day on Nov.10 weekend. This is a long weekend with the holiday falling on Mon.It would also depend on the weather :puzzled:
Anyone else up for a fall blast to Seaside?(if your not there already)

bigkid - 23-10-2012 at 11:23 AM

wow, 2 events on the same weekend, at the same beach. dude you are the man. I plan to be there at the other event so I may try to show at this one also.:lol:

3-Days Out....

crazyherb - 23-10-2012 at 09:25 PM

I'll let you know...like 3-days from the event...LOL...
That's about as far ahead as I can plan without domestic duties trumping my plans...but I'm sure the wife will appreciate the early warning shot off the bow...

Stocking up on double layer long underwear and Gortex..and a massive investment in RIPSTOP.....until then... :P
Maybe some interesting things will happen before then (nudge) Jeff...(cough)...

At least it's not a long drive...for me anyway....

BTW - What's the "OTHER" event that's supposed to be happening??

buggeyed - 23-10-2012 at 11:44 PM

I posted this up early to give people time to plan ahead. It won't be a sure thing for me until I see the weather report a few days ahead. But if the beach is in good condition and the weather looks good I'll be there.

BTW-There is no other event, only a fool who posted the same event twice, once in the wrong section:spin::spin:

I can only hope also, but does look good.

It won't happen again, right? I think I did it once to. I was looking forward to 2 events, would be cool to join them together.:wee:

sand flea - 24-10-2012 at 04:59 PM

You know I'll be there!!!

The beach is in fantastic shape and the entry is in very good condition also.

Yes lets watch the weather closely and see what happens.
Remember the time we sat in the back of my van and flew the Revs in the rain storm? And then we pulled out the buggies!
That was awesome!!!
Let's hope for better weather this time!
fingers crossed
Chris (C1)

i wanna see Herbs 24m too!!!

"Chris (C1), Are you guys trying to start something south of the border:lol:

I dont wanna see Herbs 24m, I want to fly it. I think the one he's getting is slightly used.:P

fletcht - 25-10-2012 at 06:44 PM

Better chance of decent weather at the sod farm. ?? Will be keeping my eyes on forecasts.

sand flea - 25-10-2012 at 07:24 PM

With decent weather I know the rest of the Sunset Beach Bums will show up too.

Crazy Herb rips it up and I just wanted to see him fly his 24,
and I would love to see it as a buggy engine.

We'll talk,
Chris C1

csa_deadon - 25-10-2012 at 11:02 PM

Bah! day 2 of 6 in a row at work that week.

Bladerunner - 26-10-2012 at 05:33 AM

Hmmmm ,

I have a feeling I will be desperate enough to take the drive ? I'll keep an eye on the weather as well.

Where in the world have you been?
Eating crumpets with the Queen? Figured you gave up the states for a long walk off a short pier. :P

So are you back now, or chit-chating from afar?

buggeyed - 26-10-2012 at 09:28 AM

csa-If the weather is good you need to come down with a case of kitebuggyitis,it's always good for a few days off work and there's only one cure.
I'm hoping for some good weather!!!!

bigkid - 26-10-2012 at 11:54 AM

The wife asked if anything is coming up, she wants to get away for the weekend.
Good weather or not, rain or sun, calm or wind, Hell or high water, life or death, well maybe not death, anyways the RV is ready and the campground is reserved and She said, "lets go". I got the best wife:saint:

ChrisH, you coming? Bring the MG CrooZer.

Bladerunner - 26-10-2012 at 03:42 PM

This sod farm ?

How many hours from Van ?

Won't it be soaking wet ( now ) by then ?

Hotels?

We are NAPKA. would we need a practice permit ?

Are they OK with ATB ?

Wind? Predictable ??

:bigok:

Alvord keeps looking interesting and then I think about 28 hours drive time ?

bigkid - 26-10-2012 at 04:24 PM

I will have to call and see what the wind is like this time of year. It gets rather calm late fall early winter before the snow flys by on it's way from the pass to Idaho. The beach would be a better bet.
I will call and double check. If any Canadians show up at the sod farm then it will have to be a NAPKA event, if it is me and my friends then no permit is needed.:P:lol: The owner is a great guy, he has a buggy and kites so he would welcome us with a big smile
The sod farm is about 160 miles East of Seattle, just shy of 3 hours and over Snoqualime Pass, which could be a mess this time of year.

Yeh, I'm back. Not a lot of crumpets, but some good ales with locals. Had a good walk at West Sands beach in St. Andrews. Locals there aren't as hard up for flying as we are, no one about. Did have coffee and a good conversation with Rodger however..

My point, in bringing it up. I'm already on this side.

I'll keep Sunset on my radar. Wife has to be in Seattle on Tuesday the 13th. Sod farm looking better. :)

Bladerunner did mention Coupeville, in another post. been there haven't flown there. We are talking about Whidbey Island right?

Ok....now...LOL!!

crazyherb - 27-10-2012 at 12:17 AM

Hey now...Read the topic!! LOL...
Sunset Beach Weekend...(Long Pause)...

If you want SOD FARM start your own thread!!
LOL... (I keeed, I keeeed)...

I'm still doing my anti-rain dance....(wife says it resembles some sad version of N'Sync Bye Bye Bye)... :o

Bladerunner - 27-10-2012 at 10:32 AM

Right ,

I have explored my options and Sunset as always looks best.

Just curious. If we had a NAPKA event at the sod could the owner attend or would we have to get him to join us ? :duh:

bigkid - 27-10-2012 at 10:43 AM

The sod farm is always a great place to ride. If Kent is busy for the day, he will find a way to join in, if not no big deal.
Just need one of the regulars to be present to keep Kent happy.

Seriously thinking about heading down on that weekend.
I have the 9th off and have to head back on the 12th so I would leave here on the evening of the 8th.
Everything now depends on the weather.
Fingers crossed.

Great to hear Ken, the beach is awesome and HUGE!
I'll start to work on the weather.

cross your fingers too

Bladerunner - 2-11-2012 at 06:44 AM

The 14 day trend went from rain Sat. + Sun. last night to both days clear today ? :dunno:

I am desperate enough that anything decent in the way of weather will see me there ! :bouncing::bouncy::bouncing:

bigkid - 2-11-2012 at 10:38 AM

My wife said we are going, rain or shine, wind or calm, we are going.
Then she asked me if the weather isnt any good for bugging, "what are you going to do?" I have one kite with a double dose of Kite-refit on it, just need a rain coat and I'm good to go. Maybe need to do a stop rain dance

This is a big part of why I want to get down.

High wind and I can test the Flysurfers treatment .
Low wind and I can test the Aurora wet.

I kind of like the idea of you BK being there to see both of these virgin ( ish ) flights ! Nobody can call it like the BK ! :wink2:

So a BIT of rain won't be welcome but won't be scaring me off.

ChrisH - 2-11-2012 at 06:32 PM

The weather is looking really good so far! Sunny and clear on Saturday, hopefully there's wind!

bigkid - 2-11-2012 at 07:07 PM

OK, so I will do the wind dance to,

Where are you staying Jeff?

Test flights

crazyherb - 2-11-2012 at 11:13 PM

Blade...looking forward to seeing Aurora in person...almost jumped on the bulk order...but was saving for a different kite..(nudge) Jeff... :singing:

bigkid - 3-11-2012 at 03:53 AM

Fletcht, I am staying at Buds. They have Chinese food next door:thumbup:

Crazyherb, still waiting on things. Don't know how to say, I want it, please send it now, I have cash, any other way but, I WANT IT, PLEASE SEND IT NOW, I HAVE CASH. I was told I would have it in time to deliver it to you on the 10th.:dunno:

buggeyed - 3-11-2012 at 10:03 AM

I'm hoping the forcast is going to hold,it's looking good for next weekend.

I just picked up a set of 135cm skis with a sweet quick click system for adjusting to boot size . If any of Y'all are into it, bring yer boots and give " sandski " a try ! :duh:

Offer does not come with any promise toward your safety! But I'm happy to risk MINE !

The Aurora also arrived and will be there for everybody that wants a shot at it !

Judging by tides I will be there Sat + Sun. Leave here Fri night.

Bring your Long Johns . It looks clear but cold so far ! :wee:

What are the beach approaches like ? Any I should avoid with a basic car.

crazyherb - 4-11-2012 at 12:56 AM

Oh no...skis...LOL...
Just watched the video the other day...of the dude kite skiing on the beach..
What a tease...I think my knees are already barking at me...
Wonder if there's any yard sales on boots this weekend.
:spin:
Now I'm really looking forward to the event...even if, just to watch!!

bigkid - 4-11-2012 at 03:21 AM

I have the boots and 2 pair of skis that haven't seen daylight in years, might as well make use of them. I have 2 snowboards that are ready for kiting, might use one to do a bit of sanding if and only after the skis succeed or fail. My knees are yelling at the thought already, might be the wind and rain dancing was a bit much.
And by the way, fletcht, in private is not as much fun as in public.:P

BB, I look forward to the Aurora Borealis to make a showing, see what we can do to add a bit of seaweed green to those great colors.

Great to here. Having only 2 Kens is like Larry and Curly showing up with No Mo' !

Seat warmer ..... Now that is one thing you haven't put on your pimped out bug. I give you 1 week to invent one ! :ninja:

:smug:

P.S. From the little experience I have had trying to get motion over resistance like these skis it is my core muscles that are my weak point. I am confident I can down wind it like crazy. Holding a line will be amazing and the real challenge ? :puzzled:

dirtslide - 4-11-2012 at 01:23 PM

looking at heated motorcycle vest right now!!! Thanks for the idea Blade.

First you have to undergo a background check, be finger printed, show 2 pieces of ID, leave a cash deposit in USD which is non refundable, and lastly you will be fitted with an ankle monitor.
After you fulfill those requirements, I will make a decision based on whether the ball and chain will fit around your neck.
I will hold off on the bomb vest for now:lol:

anybody looked at a wind forecast. Weather looks OK, but Sailflow's wind forecast for OR coast looks like garbage. Around home sailflow's record is that they seldom underestimate wind. Their predictions are for like 4kts or less.and mostly from the south.

didn't look at the wind forecast or the tide table or the weather report. As long as the wife said we can go, WE GO.
If we can't fly, we can always sit on the beach and drink a cold or hot one, and tell each other lies and tall tales, we can be a legend in our own minds.:P;
I will at least get some pics of the new Big Kid Kite Stakes I have developed. They cost about 10 bucks each, but shipping will be much more than they are worth. But they are cool.

this got me laughing, I use WetAlert, I just hold up a finger make sure you lick it first, what ever side is colder is the side the wind is blowing from.

A more high tech solution is the use of Styrofoam weather worms, throw them out in the yard.
If they are wet, it is raining.
If they are all white, it is snowing.
If they seam a bit dry and crunchy, it is sunny out.
If they are not in the yard, it is windy.

buggeyed - 6-11-2012 at 09:58 PM

Unless there's a big change in the forcast ,Sat weather still looks good ,hopefully the rain will hold off until Sun. evening,Mon good chance of rain.
I'll be bringing lots of kites for whatever winds are there or are not:dunno:.I hope Jeff has been out doing his wind dance with his little styrofoam buddies.:D

Wind Buddies

crazyherb - 6-11-2012 at 11:21 PM

Freeking awesome Jeff!!

I LOVE the WIND BUDDIES!!

I gotta make some and do a funny video with them....
WIND CHECK!!....
Scene 1
Kiter1: All serious with his digital wind meter...testing...probing...holding up cell phone, checking web sites.
(Cut to scene 2)
Kiter 2: Just going ALL OUT tossing WIND BUDDIES all over the place, jumping up and down....yelling "Yes!! YES! It's blowing, It's blowing!!"

Ok, now back to kiting....

It's been awhile, but with a SE how is the area down by the river? Just North of Seaside.

buggeyed - 7-11-2012 at 06:56 PM

The river shifted towards Seaside this year so there's alot of beach down there that should be good on a SE.

sand flea - 7-11-2012 at 06:58 PM

Hi Fletcht
Bison and I go there on occasion and its a great place. Not the several mile pulls SS offers, but some good runs absolutely.

I think it's working.

some of us do have a few big kites you can barrow for the day or weekend, my kites now come with a timer connected to the explosive device in the handles, just be sure to return them before Sunday afternoon, it would be a bit tricky loading up your new bug with out any hands.

fletcht - 8-11-2012 at 02:07 PM

Is the parking for the river area, (don't know if it has a regular name) the same as it has always been. Small little lot off of town. I've been in there with my Van before but not sure about navigating that area with my Van and trailer. Other options? Hoping to get in early enough Friday to fly for a bit. But we will see. Forecast looks NE Friday ideas?

Bladerunner - 8-11-2012 at 06:01 PM

Hey Chris,

I'm happy to loan most of my gear. While this Blade has a pretty small range it is a great engine. Had it for years and never been spanked by it !
I'll be sure and toss it in ! Jeff will like to see the shampoo job so it is win, win !

:bigok:

PS bring your own KK if you find you need them.

fletcht - 9-11-2012 at 05:04 PM

As well as the 1/2 inch of hail

sunset-Jim - 9-11-2012 at 05:40 PM

alright, who brought this hail shower with them? It was nice n clear till I got back from Rockaway Beach this afternoon.

Sorry...

crazyherb - 9-11-2012 at 05:55 PM

Sorry...my Southwest rain dance kicked off a hail storm...
Shake the wrong way and all heck breaks loose...

Tomorrow will be better...just needed to get it out of it's system..

sunset-Jim - 9-11-2012 at 05:58 PM

I'm kinda thinking that since the forecasters didn't mention this hail storm, that perhaps they will also be wrong about the forecasted E winds for tomorrow

What's this??

crazyherb - 9-11-2012 at 06:16 PM

Looks about right to me?

fletcht - 9-11-2012 at 06:24 PM

I'm not responsible for the hail. The light snow in the mountains didn't follow me. This storm came from onshore. So, tomorrow should be great. Right?

sand flea - 9-11-2012 at 07:04 PM

I looked at a beach cam and thought it was snow! Good thing it was only hail.

well it was good seeing you all, too bad there was no wind. See you in the Spring!

The flying was not great, but three days on the beach in relative sunshine was incredible. I think Saturday was warmer than some of the days I was down for in June or September. Awesome to see everyone. Thanks for suggesting it, Bugeyed.

What a beautiful day, i saw a temp of 50 degrees in Seaside!
I wish you guys didn't have to live so far away

Take care

In case someone posts any pics of me dancing or of the sand ditches, it's all a setup, it wasn't me, I had nothing to do with any of it.

It was nice to stand around and tell stories and lies for the day. I know I had a great time.

A bad day at the beach is better than the best day at work. Wait a minute, this is my work.
A bad day at the beach is a good day at work. Yeah thats what I meant to say.

Nice video Big Kid. Great choice of music; are you trying to give a little culture the group? Sort of like adding yeast to the wort when making beer.
How many rods did you guys break?

I don't listen to much music anymore and I have no idea of how to get some with out paying. So if youtube is willing to give it for free and it is already there, it's a no brainier. Besides, I didn't recognize any of the bazillion songs and artists that were listed except a few of the oldies. But you are correct, our group needs a bit of culture.

Gerald broke only one tube and it was the ferrules so it will be a easy fix.

Would have been a great day for the kite drags, but nobody had the nerve to try it out.
I was talking to a couple that decided NOT to do a downwinder and put his kite away, but asked about the small foils we fly. I showed him a 2m NPW on just bridle and handles. Bad Move, butt scudding at 35mph is very hard on the jeans. But what a rush, so I guess I am the winner, the world champion, the best in the west, the undefeated champ. I am the Mohamed Ali of Kite Drags. just glad I stopped before I ended up with this:moon:
Think I will hit the trophy shop later today and have a big 4 foot high trophy made up. I am the Greatest..

I hate to be the one to say this... (ok, I really don't) Ya should had been here today!! Gerald did and boy did it pay off. When I left he had dropped down to a 7m and it wasn't lacking any power. AND, no rain. We even ended up giving some lessons to a few that stopped by. Happy Veterans Day

Ha Ha,

Gerald is famous for hanging on and getting the best of it after we have left ! Way to go Buggeyed! :ninja:

Any time spent on the beach with the the Oregon crew is worth the ride. Sharing a cottage was fun ! It wasn't a great weekend of flying but still a lot more fun that I would have had hanging around here and cursing the weather !

C'ya all in the Spring !

As always Sunset didn't let me down and I got my 4 hours of riding in yesterday.I'll post some video once I get it edited.
A great weekend and we'll see you in the spring.:bigok::yes:
