Power Kite Forum

the beach from hell, (at least it started that way).

bigkid - 18-8-2013 at 09:04 AM

Been out the last 2 days and the frustration level has been higher than the tide.
The beach does not deserve to be called a beach, maybe a salty wet pile of sand at the best.
Everything about it is wrong and a problem to fight with. While fighting with the public and the low wind(0-2mph) I did get some play time in but had to work at it way to much.
The soft dry upper beach is too soft for bigfoots and you cant get going in any direction as you are drug along with the kite.
The lower section at the water is ok with bigfoots but too soft for barrows.
The sectin between the upper and lower were the traffic drives is not wide enough to drive on even with a small buggy.
There are pools of water deep enough to dive into and sand bars that are surroundedon 3 sides.
The elevation of the beach is 6 feet in spots.

So with all this, and all the different buggies and different setups I have, along with a 12m kite on 200 feet of line, i was able to have a bit of fun for a few minutes.
I flipped my buggy changing direction as I was sliding sideways down a 3 foot drop off into the water and was dragged to the other side of the pond as the kite reached the zenith it lifted me up to my feet and thats when the buggy let go of me.
Most of the time it was like trail riding because of the bad sand and all the trucks driving next to me trying to talk to me as I am trying to get down the beach. Not knowing they are on the only hard part of the beach that I need to access to get back.
So it was off to the surf and through the ponds to get past the people.l

Now to my point of this thread.
With 3 buggies, and 3 different tire setups, any one buggy would not work but for a small area of the beach. Not being able to park the kite and head up or down the beach with a perfect onshore wind was a bit frustrating. The sand wasnt consistant, and the beach was not flat at all. I watched a jeep going down the beach and it looked as if he was at a monster truck race with all the jumps and holes to bomb through.
17 inch Sysmic wheels and tires woulnt work, 21inch beach racers were useless, and the barrows were a joke.

I am hoping for a better day today as a few others will be out trying to buggy. I will sit and watch:evil:

I cant print any of the words I was yelling yesterday, I dont even know how to spell half of them.
How about 7734, is that ok?:saint:

The beach is 2 miles north of Cranberry Road at Long Beach.

Morrie Williams - 18-8-2013 at 11:47 AM

Sorry to hear that you had so many "challenges". Will be leaving for Long Beach in about 2 hours. Will see you at the Sid Snyder/Tenth Street approach on Tuesday, I'll be there starting Monday and staying thru Sunday.

Better luck at WSIKF!

crazyherb - 18-8-2013 at 12:12 PM

Heading out for this afternoon @ Cranberry..

bigkid - 18-8-2013 at 11:45 PM

Yep, stood around and played with a few kites and I did not buggy. I did enjoy watching a few others deal with the stuff I did yesterday. Wet kites are not fun, and the walk of shame is even better when you can point and laugh. Thanks guys, you made my day. Should we try again in the morning? HaHaHaHaHaHa. you guys are great.

crazyherb - 19-8-2013 at 12:20 AM

(Raising Hand) For the walk of shame.
Tomorrow, if I didn't have to work...arg...Oh...I'm off at 4:30...evenings...hmmmm...

Glad to "share some of the pain" with you today!!

More line, we need more line Scotty....I'm give'n her all she's got captain!!

I still see a 21M Flysurfer or Spleen X19 in my future for days like today...$$$$

crazyherb - 19-8-2013 at 12:57 AM

Oh...ya...

Let's just call the beach "Tactical" ;)

I took my electric RC glider out after the wind failed us and grabbed a video...and have it uploading to vimeo.
Coming soon...

lives2fly - 19-8-2013 at 02:19 AM

Feeling your pain guys, my beaches are always changing and are sometimes unridable. I have a lot to choose from but you could waste the whole day checking them all out!

They are better in the winter though which is when i do most of my buggy/landboard riding.

csa_deadon - 19-8-2013 at 03:03 AM

But remember, "A bad day of kiting, is still better then a good day at work."

Wow sweet little video. The beach sure looks better up there than it does down below. Thanks for the smile, I had to get back to work for a day or 2 and this makes it a little bit better.

erratic winds - 19-8-2013 at 10:43 AM

yeah, based on BS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K-s description of the beach, I expected normandy during the landing, from your aerial video it looks amazing.

I was 2 miles farther up the beach. Its hard to see the elevation changes from so far up.
If you walk accross the wet sand you will leave little puddles where you stepped.

crazyherb - 19-8-2013 at 05:51 PM

Those "little" pools are DEEP...

Cheddarhead - 19-8-2013 at 08:28 PM

I can almost feel your pain Jeff:( Try bugging on a beach around the Great Lakes sometime. We have no tides so it's interesting to say the least.

RonH - 22-8-2013 at 04:15 PM

Here is what you need to do for the beach conditions...

crazyherb - 22-8-2013 at 04:35 PM

Torn... big light wind LEI for water or FLYSURFER...
$1500 vs $2300

ARG!! (Pocket lint)

ChrisH - 22-8-2013 at 09:14 PM

Rough life, traveling from here to there...kiting along the way. That would suck. I would hate that.

MDK - 24-8-2013 at 09:16 PM

sounds like my experience at Pacific City OR.

bigkid - 24-8-2013 at 09:21 PM

Post the video Steve, show the world how to fly in no wind with a 10m on 270 foot lines.
There was a little breeze, the yellow flag out by the water was moving, sometimes.
Almost took out your glider a couple of times with the kite.

Wicked cool video! Thanks for sharing, I love the POV and the music fits very well!

PistolPete - 25-8-2013 at 08:53 PM

Thanks for the video Herb, was a fun weekend! Amazed Jeff could buggy on those 288ft lines, was a handful flying static... Enjoyed watching how you flew that 24m Phantom on 180ft lines while riding the haize/flexboardz. Hope to get down to the south coast area for another NAPKRA event soon.

crazyherb - 25-8-2013 at 09:46 PM

I may have to hire you Steve for your video expertise.
Nice job.

PistolPete - 29-8-2013 at 08:01 PM

Oh yea, forgot to mention, while we were riding last week and saw all those Revolution Kites in the air...that was a record breaker of 81 (9x9 grid)!
