Octane 5m minimum wind

kodiakfisher - 28-3-2014 at 10:12 AM

Ok so I have been flying Rev's and Ozone 1.5m for awhile now. The 1.5 doesn't surprise me much anymore.

Went landboarding on the beach 10-12mph and with the 1.5m had to really work the kite through the wind window while taking advantage of apparent wind. Lots of work but doable.

I would like to know what the minimum wind this kite will work in with 30m lines taking advantage of apparent wind on hard pack sand (low tide)

Thanks,

Kodiakfisher

you should be able to fly down to 4 mph or so without a problem. keep it moving and maybe even lower.

You were able to landboard in 12mph with a 1.5m ?? That's impressive - no wonder it was lots of work! With a 5m on 30m lines - I would have thought you'd need 6-7 mph. I need about that for my 6.5m Method on 30m lines.

I was thinking more like 5 myself. The 5m will definitely fly in 4mph winds. If it produces enough power for your surface in that wind is speculative. It sounds like you have a super surface so ... 4 - 7mph. Low end depends on so much. Your weight, location, pilot skills etc..

Nice thing about the 5m is it's range . I think it is the most versatile FB . Once you are master of it you can use it into the upper teens and spank it around to squeeze out a good low end.

Big Mike, if you are at IBB please say hello. I have wanted to meet you for a while now. I will be with the Vancouver crew and on Coyotes.

With my Octane 5m, the winds needed to be around 8-10+ mph minimum to be useful. At 4-7mph, the only thing I could do is keep it in the air and twiddle around doing figure 8s or something.

Here is a bit of evidence of our landboarding in 10-12 mph winds.

I am the guy in front my friend is using the red Ozone that has more pull than the older yellow one. The newer (red) 1.5m has screen over the vents and an extra opening. I could have gone faster with the newer red Ozone and longer lines.

At one time my dad driving the truck said I was doing 10-12 mph so basically with 20m lines 1.5m kite and really working the window with a sine wave yup we did it. Now I've flown for a few years now both Ozone's and Rev and skateboarded a bunch as a kid.
