Anybody try this new Peter Lynn Single Skin Traction kite?

Randy - 19-3-2015 at 04:46 AM

Found this on the Peter Lynn himself webpage. Anybody try it? Looks a bit like an NPW. I got a quote of $65US and $30 for shipping...

That looks like the "Skin" ...I've seen a few guys talk about it here... I think Flyguy0101 and Bobalooie57 both got them, not sure I remember what they thought though... here was the thread http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=27318#pid26...

ssayre - 19-3-2015 at 05:41 AM

That seemed like a project that had potential but never took off as far as availability of sizes or one of the major brands buying into it. I heard rumors of peter lynn kiteboarding was suppose to have something single skin in the works?

It might be worth buying for you since you can make kites. You might be able to make and modify a few?

MeatÐriver - 19-3-2015 at 07:18 AM

Give it some time and I hear PL is going to drop their new single skin line called the "Uniq". It will be offered in 2,3 and 4 line models in various sizing of each.
I don't think it's really too far away either.

Randy - 19-3-2015 at 08:19 AM

Thanks guys - sounds like the same kite. I think I'll get one, though figuring out how to place an order with alibabba is a bit confusing. I got the price from the kite company, but they didn't tell me how to order it.....

bobalooie57 - 19-3-2015 at 08:21 AM

Maybe try clicking on "Contact Supplier" on the alibaba page. Jessica Liang is the same customer service rep that I had.

Randy - 19-3-2015 at 08:40 AM

I tried that and I got an email from her with the price. Sent one back saying - ok - how do I order it? I thought Alibabba was supposed to be the greatest thing since NPW kites....:D I guess the time difference is a factor in all this.

markite - 19-3-2015 at 08:43 AM

The new UNIQ is a bit more refined than the link to the earlier kite. It's not released yet but the quad line version is sized from 1.5 - 4.5 m.

MeatÐriver - 19-3-2015 at 09:17 AM

My personal opinion would be too wait for the official PL release. It will undoubtedly be more refined, as mentioned above and I would be stupified if it didn't offer better performance.

I would consider the kite on Alibaba still much more in the prototype stage.

abkayak - 19-3-2015 at 09:38 AM

im w/ Meat....i wouldnt spend the 95$
an Oreo kite might be cool though

Think I saw that in an email from one of the online kite shops a few months ago,... didn't realize it was manuf. by PL... looked cool, kinda like a smaller version of the Peak.

ssayre - 19-3-2015 at 09:45 AM

Only up to 4.5?

MeatÐriver - 19-3-2015 at 10:02 AM

As far as the 4.5 being on the small size..... I haven't seen one yet, but who knows? It could possibly be similar to the peak1 in regards to its very flat profile, giving it a rather high PA for it's size. ie more power per m². Obviously we're not looking at something that is "a 4.5m that powers like a 15m!" or anything though. Time will tell.

Trying to run down some pics.

markite - 19-3-2015 at 10:48 AM

It's more refined than the skin (the version mentioned at the top) but not like the Peak - looks to be in between the two. No word on actual release date but should be coming soon. If anyone followed the Mongolia buggy crossing last year the kites are similar looking and the guys commented on how much more power per size they had compared to the f.b. foils and far more adaptable in gusty winds.

Hé hé hé, Don't think one would need much bigger than that... Windrange on them is silly, they fly in next to nothing and power up as well.

But, with enough people asking for bigger sizes they might come..

bigE123 - 26-3-2015 at 03:31 AM

It is the "refined" skin, as far as I'm aware the plans were given to a third party to build under licence, it flies pretty close to an NPW, I have one of the skin prototypes which at the time needed some adjusting to get the most out of it. It's very much like an NPW I haven't used it much for the buggy since doing some initial testing on it, personally I thought it a bit flighty at times and went back to the NPWs for a more stability. If you want a fun kite it's worth a punt but for serious stuff wait till the next real PL branded generation of single skin.
I had a 4m skin back to back with an NPW, power was pretty much the same, however the newer style (more peak like) I reckon do pack more power and fly in lighter winds, I had a static session with my 5m in @ 3mph and it was easy to keep moving round and was generating some pull when the wind lifted a touch.

That's what she said. :D

Single skin design is my preference for my goals and conditions. Looking forward to trying one. I noticed your mood (longboard). Have you tried these with short lines and longboard.

John Holgate - 26-3-2015 at 04:32 AM

Do we know if these are the kites that Craig Hansen was using on his Mongolia trip?

Flyguy had immediate trouble with his.

Are these kite only?

-mj- - 26-3-2015 at 08:03 AM

Haven't used them with my longboard yet, we are just coming out of winter here and wet'ish streets aren't cool to ride.

The kites for the Mongolia trip were late prototypes, that's about all I can say for now.

And no, the PL single skins will all come complete with lines, handles and all.

ssayre - 26-3-2015 at 03:18 PM

I'm going to guess they will fly on short lines. I would like to add another design to my single skin collection. The anticipated sizes sound perfect for longboard, but unless they are miracle kites, I will most likely need the larger sizes for my wind on grass. Either way, I must have one at some point just for being single skin.:)

Randy - 1-4-2015 at 03:05 PM

Meant to reply to this earlier, but forgot. I am a little confused as to which comments apply to which kite. Some may be talking about the "Skin" while others about the "Uniq" which may not have been released yet. Anyway, after looking at the photos again, and bablouie57's video, I don't think this kite is the "Skin." It looks like it has 5 panels, while the Skin seems to have seven, though I'm positive about either number.

bigE123 - 1-4-2015 at 03:20 PM

5 or 7 panels there were various prototypes, having looked at the photos on the link..... erm I think it's not really being targeted at a "serious" market, it does have power and I'm surprised it's marketed showing children flying it like it's a box kite!

skimtwashington - 1-4-2015 at 03:52 PM

Flyguy had his 'Skin' for sale awhile back. Not sure if he sold it. ..but ask him .

You may need to mod it for better flying...?

John Holgate - 3-4-2015 at 02:31 AM

Found a pic of the Uniq 2.5m and posted what very little info I could find here: Peter Lynn Uniq Very much like the Mongolia prototypes that Craig Hansen was flying. Definitely not the 'Skin'. This looks like a very promising kite.

bigE123 - 3-4-2015 at 03:46 AM

Have I seen something like that somewhere before?

ssayre - 3-4-2015 at 04:05 AM

Nice picture BigE. The unique does look just like yours. Too bad they won't come in the sizes yours are.

bigE123 - 3-4-2015 at 04:09 AM

:D at least it proves there is a lot of mileage in this type of single skin design, I think commercially the smaller sizes have a bigger market until they get everything ironed out to start making bigger sizes. Toying with making a 3m next and pushing the AR wider ;)

ssayre - 3-4-2015 at 04:21 AM

BigE, have you tried flying your design just off the power lines? In other words, would they fly well as 2 line or would it be like trying to fly a traditional foil on a bar?

bigE123 - 3-4-2015 at 04:32 AM

What I have done to mine is add a Z-bridle so yes it will fly as a two line, due to the sizes I've built I'd rather keep the 4 lines tho' for the extra control. The 12m does fly off a bar as I added de-power to it. We're just going in to spring, so now I have a tuned 3 kite quiver I'm going to try a turbo on them, can't see any problems as my NPWs worked well on the turbo bar.

Copied the Peak design?

skimtwashington - 3-4-2015 at 07:51 AM

The uniq and Peak look alike(except for AR) and even rhyme:P...

The same 'rib' design stands out foremost...with curved leading edge right behind.

Nothing unique in the Uniq....

Apparently nothing proprietary in the Peak that's granted if applied for...?

What company is next?

bigE123 - 3-4-2015 at 08:19 AM

The Peak bridle attachment is different, the un-uniq has a slightly different wing tip. It's like a children's spot the difference competition :D

-mj- - 15-4-2015 at 07:55 AM

Hold on!
Copied peak design...

Peak vs Uniq is apples and oranges.

Peak is a depower and needs the bar regulation to keep in shape, next to that its got glasfibre rods all over the leading edge, also to maintain shape I might add.

The Uniq's are no depower kites, and do not have (or need) spars or intricate systems to keep them in shape and flying well.

Oh, and I've been flying the 3-line version on short lines with longboard, works like a charm

I suspected it would work well :D. I must have one now! Do you have any idea when they will be released.

ssayre - 15-4-2015 at 02:46 PM

Interesting find alf, the uniq does look very similar to those. The YouTube video on the their website was published in January so I'm guessing they are fairly new?

-mj- - 16-4-2015 at 12:10 AM

Can't confirm a release date with 100% certainty but they're in production now so it 'll take a couple more weeks.
As they're a completely new product range we will have to do a final check when we get them here, which 'll also delay them by an extra weeks or so.

(testing at the beach... such a hard job :D )

-mj- - 16-4-2015 at 12:20 AM

And yeah, interesting find Alf.
Ours look better tho :P

(and 'll be cheaper...)

alf - 16-4-2015 at 12:41 AM

at the end most of us with use those kites
i am asking myself if they would keep their shape on a frame for kitewing use

3shot - 16-4-2015 at 03:55 AM

Looking forward to it -mj-!!
