17m Flysurfer Speed Silverarrow (Silberpfeil)

SecondWind - 5-2-2007 at 08:21 AM

I got to fly it for the first time yesterday

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/DaVinch/speed_silver.jpg

Even though it was 8 degrees F out, I just had to try it.

First thing you notice when unpacking this kite is the ultra light weight material (Skytex 27). When packed up, it looks like the same size as my old 8.5m Blade III.

When stretched out, she measures 32 feet long.

The winds were 5 to 6mph.

The kite easily inflated and with a gentle tug on the center lines, she was off. The white/silverish translucent color is just stunning in the air. The power was very impressive for such low winds - this kite will be perfect for those calm summer days. The turning rate was slow, but faster than I thought it would be for a 17m foil.

My overall Flysurfer experience is really positive so far since moving from fixed bridled Blades & Begos.

The quality is top notch and only downside I've found so far is the extensive bridle system.

Careless packing = big bunch of line salad to untangle.

Packing up is pretty simple once you open the two zippers on the leading edge. Just fold and roll.

I'll get some pictures the next time I'm out.

awesome :)
it was the speed 1 right? I think the new speed 2 comes as silver arrow in 19m! :wow:

I love my speed to death it's amazing, my only complaint is the turning speed.

I'm getting a 10m flysurfer psycho III to compliment it, think i'm going to give up peter lynn and become a full on flysurfer boy :spin:

SecondWind - 5-2-2007 at 05:03 PM

Yup, it is the Speed 1 version. I had it out again today in 8 - 10 mph winds - very nice

I've heard great things about the 10m P3. How does it compare to the 10m Speed 2?

tridude - 5-2-2007 at 05:57 PM

Sweet kite Da V! Now all you need is the 200! Kites came in today! Very nice and will send pics tomorrow! 32 feet long, you realize a F15 wingspan is only 67 feet. I believe the F5 is only 42 feet--thats freakin huge. Must be an awesome adrenaline rush!!! As usual.........stoaked:thumbup::yes:

Oh almost forgot, caught a dust devil gust and updraft today at the state fair grounds. Saw the dust devil bookin my way from the dirt parking lot. Anyway, popped a pendilum jump as it passed where I was flying and caught HUGE air with a nice landing--two pointed that SOB and was my heart pumping. Id estimate at least 12 to 15 feet. It was a freakin rush!!! It was on the Bego 600 of course!

SecondWind - 5-2-2007 at 07:28 PM

Thanks Tridude. Yeah - let's see some pictures of the Begos (all three in a line)!

B-Roc - 6-2-2007 at 06:57 AM

17M FS :o

That kite is 2 feet longer than my house :o:o

SecondWind - 6-2-2007 at 07:05 AM

Hey B-Roc,

The kite really seems huge at first, but once in the air it feels so "light".

The power delivery is so smooth...

I just need either more snow here or it needs to melt so I can use my mountainboard or buggy. We only have about 2" of snow on the ground and my snowboard was digging into the dirt during the last session

B-Roc - 6-2-2007 at 10:17 AM

I hate that in-between time when there isn't enough snow for your board / skis but too much for the buggy / ATB

Da V,

Amazing pic! That must be an awesome feeling flying something that BIG! What size lines? Must be mooring lines from the USS Ronald Reagan! as usual............................................stoaked:thumbup::smilegrin:

B-Roc - 12-2-2007 at 06:58 AM

Sweet kite and great pic with it out on the end of the lines.

tridude - 12-2-2007 at 08:35 AM

Whats up with the Diet Coke?

SecondWind - 12-2-2007 at 09:33 AM

I needed something in the picture to show you how small it packs up :tumble:

I'm a coffee/espresso guy, so I grabbed the wife's Diet Coke out of the fridge.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/DaVinch/IMG_3161.jpg

What safety system are you using? It's not the normal speed 1 backstall system?

SecondWind - 12-2-2007 at 03:59 PM

Domdino,

It's been upgraded to the fifth line FDS - works very well.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FULL DEPOWER SAFETYLINE ( FDS ) - we have been able to integrate an additional system for your safety. When using this system it is possible to fly the PULSE with an 5 th line, enabling you to react to drastically changing weather conditions and to stay in complete control. In an emergency situation, just deploy the FDS and set the kite to almost zero power whilst maintaining the possibility to relaunch the kite.

domdino - 12-2-2007 at 04:30 PM

ahh yeah i was wondering about that FDS system. Would you rate it well then? I kind of like the back stalling system (although it's useless if the wind gets too strong) are you able to still use this method to land the kite as it makes it so effortless?

Bladerunner - 12-2-2007 at 05:44 PM

I'm curious about the FDS ? Is it possible to fit my Phsyco 2 with 5th line ? Would I need to buy an upgrade kit or could I make one myself ? ( I have a spare safety leash and line ) Exactly how does it depower ?

SWEeeet kite by the way ! I often wonder why Flysurfer doesn't get more respect. Never have I seen better quality from the Backpack to the lines, all a+ materials and craftsmanship !! Amphibias to boot!!! Ozone needed a bladder to make a usable water kite !?

domdino - 12-2-2007 at 06:04 PM

you can get the upgrade kit on flysurfers website, i think maybe you need to add bridles though? ummm, here it is: http://www.flysurfer.com/Shop/pop_up/?Bild_gross=112_gr_245....

It's designed for speeds though so dunno if it'd fit on a psycho II? Humm

SecondWind - 12-2-2007 at 08:37 PM

Not sure on the P2 Snowbird. The guys at foilzone would know for sure.

woodneers - 13-2-2007 at 11:49 AM

Hasn't that thing hurt you yet DaVinch the pictures alone scare me! looks like a blast!

SecondWind - 13-2-2007 at 12:11 PM

No woodneers - but I play it pretty safe.

I haven’t found the top end for me on snow yet. I'm guessing around 15mph and I'll have all the power I ever wanted.

We just got another 4" of snow last night, so I'm ready to get some speed runs (skis on lake) in this weekend!

As for the fifth line safety system - I have used it on the Pulse a few times in big winds.

It just folds in half and drops to the ground.

In high winds, I usually bring it to the side of the window close to the ground and just let go of the bar (chicken loop undone) and the kite goes to the fifth line with very little pull. I then attach the safety line to my skis or snowboard and walk to the kite to set it up again or pack up.

In light winds, I just pull the brake lines to land it on its trailing edge.

SecondWind - 17-3-2007 at 07:04 PM

OK - found out the top end for me on land today with the SA. Winds were 14 - 18 mph. Got in some great static jumps - I was too overpowered on the board. Still a good day

Bladerunner - 18-3-2007 at 04:48 PM

I have the Phsyco 2 out for an FDS upgrade. I've been a bit shy of it's lift on land and hope with the FDS I'll use it a lot more.
Let us know how the Phsyco 3 works for you ! + what wind ranges you find. I've been to chicken to find the top but it has a definate bottom end of about 9mph.

SecondWind - 18-3-2007 at 07:24 PM

Sure will Snowbird. The UPS man should be here soon.

domdino - 18-6-2007 at 01:20 PM

I have one of these now!! :) WOW what an amazing kite. Best litewinder i've ever flown, but if it picks up it gets rather frightening!

Pssstttt, Snowbird, meet me in Squamish one day, I'll find the top end for you, ballast can do wonders.

Bladerunner - 19-6-2007 at 09:14 AM

Pab's ,
You are more than welcome to drag the P2 out to the spit.
It may well keep you going when the wind is too much for the Scorp.. The 12m F-arc is yours to use as well. You could hold on to the F-arc if you need a smaller ( older ) one. I almost never use it. If you are heading out you can swing by my place and pick them up. It's a bit of a detour to Lions Gate bridge but not too much.

Pablo - 19-6-2007 at 05:19 PM

Thanks for the offer, with my gut I can hold down the Scorpion till about 30mph, should be ok for big air at Squamish, land riding I tune it down a hare. If anything I'm more curious as to how the P2 will perform and help you get out on it. I've heard good things about them and it'd probably make a wicked all around kite for you.

domdino - 16-10-2007 at 11:39 AM

I totally want a review of the 19m silverarrow in comparison to the 17m!!!! :)

SecondWind - 16-10-2007 at 02:16 PM

Will do  I only flew it one time so far - It's been raining so much lately :sniff:

Note: I fixed the picture links above of the 17m SA1

SecondWind - 16-10-2007 at 06:36 PM

I did get a few pics of the 19m SA2 before the storms came in.

Here is how small it packs down:

gawd i love me some flysurfers :)
but this one's just so much bloody money!!! Grrr.

SecondWind - 16-10-2007 at 07:08 PM

I know...I just had so much fun with the SA1 last season on the frozen lake that I talked myself into the SA2.

I thaught the 17m SA1 was perfect  I only wanted a bit more depower. With a 1.5 mod, you should be set.

tridude - 16-10-2007 at 07:22 PM

Sweet!!

domdino - 16-10-2007 at 07:36 PM

awesome... yeah the depowerness is the only thing that bothers me about the 17m! It absolutely starts destroying me when the wind gets above 13mph!!!! I think i shall send it over to powerzone soon :)

It would be very naughty of me to fork out WELL over 2000$ to get a speed 2 :) hehe

powerzone - 16-10-2007 at 08:30 PM

Hey DOM.... start talking yourself into and FDS for the SA 1.5 as well....HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED !

the FLS and the old Roto-Leash are far inferior to the FDS. gives you even more confidence.

Send that 17m over!

powerzone - 5-11-2007 at 08:30 AM

well... the SilverArrow 17m Speed 1.5 MOD enabled another one of the funnest sessions ever this past weekend.

the wind dropped just below 10knots so the SilverArrow came out.... ZERO pre-inflate, a perfect side window-launch, and i was off smiling

cruising, jumping, upwind, etc.... in 8-10knots for 2 hrs on a Spleene 134.

these kites are unbelievable.

it is an awesome experience to jump and hear pure silence. can't hear the wind (there is none), can't hear the water (its nearly calm), just quietly float for a while....wow. its enchanting.

thanks DOMINDO... for the fun session, i get dibbs on this kite should you sell.

domdino - 5-11-2007 at 08:45 AM

Glad you had fun! :)
Look forward to giving it a try myself if the wind ever calms down a bit here!!! :)

SecondWind - 9-12-2007 at 08:12 PM

I finally got a chance to use the 19m Silverarrow 2 on snow today

Winds were only about 10 mph with around 5" of snow, but I had plenty of power to get in some decent runs and jumps (long/floaty).

Here are a few pics I took while skiing.

Thanks Tri - It's hard to get any good pics by yourself

tridude - 10-12-2007 at 07:01 AM

your tellin me!

SecondWind - 29-12-2007 at 08:12 PM

OK - this is going to sound crazy.

The winds today were 5 - 6 mph with small gusts to maybe 8mph. Frozen lake with about 2" of crusty snow on top.

My top speed was 26.9 mph! It just doesn't seem possible...

Park and ride seemed to build more speed than working the kite - it just kept picking up speed.

tridude - 30-12-2007 at 11:51 AM

Congrats, and not hard to believe. Basically you have a 19m depowered race kite, more or less. OK John, go easy on me! This summer, a directional 6'4 board should get you going in just about the same winds-- maybe a tad bit more but not much! So a trip to the Rockies before winter is up?

powerzone - 30-12-2007 at 10:13 PM

you talkin' to me?

go easy on what?

tridude - 31-12-2007 at 07:19 AM

yes I was, referring to the SA2 as a depowered race kite. With constant acceleration it seems to be.

speleopower - 5-5-2008 at 01:03 PM

I want to try one of the 19m Silver Arrows:P Anyone have one for a Pass the Arrow???? Just kidding. It looks like the ticket for summertime low wind blues.

I've already tried to get Tridude to pass on his flysurfers! i dont think it's gonna happen anytime soon!

Bladerunner - 5-5-2008 at 04:44 PM

James is a local that just picked one up and this is what he has to say.
http://kiteboardbc.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=494

I consider him to be one of the best educated and most experienced riders in these parts.

powerzone - 20-5-2008 at 12:30 PM

it makes me giggle... so many people just "finding" flysurfer all of a sudden and are amazed at what they can do.

leebrianh - 20-5-2008 at 01:16 PM

I wish more shops carry Flysurfer for demo in US. I have to "buy" them to just "try" out.

DenisLaMenace - 20-5-2008 at 01:43 PM

so far I have tested in my short Kitesurfer carreer the following Flysurfer kites in the order:

Speed1 13m (demo)
Pyscho3 10m (demo & current onwer)
Psycho3 6m (demo)
Pulse1 7m (previous owner)
Pulse1 10m (previous owner)
Cool 4m (demo)
Speed2 15m (demo)
SA2 15m (current onwer)
Speed2 10m (demo)
Speed2 8m (demo)

The only one that disapointed me was the Cool 4m.

The most difficult one to handle was the Speed2 8m. Does not like gust and too fast in high winds.

I would not hesitate buying another FS without trying if reviews are good.

SecondWind - 20-5-2008 at 02:17 PM

I agree Buzz - The small Speed 2s are quick

A slight adjustment to the mixer really helped the stability on my 8m Speed 2. It's a rocket on the snow :D

So far, I have flown (Flysurfer):

7m, 13m Pulse 1
8m Pulse 2
8m, 10m, 13m, 17m Psycho IIIs
8m, 15m, 19m Speed 2s
17m Speed 1
