Diversions

macboy - 11-9-2008 at 09:08 PM

So, I've just come home from beating the living daylights out of an RC truck on an evening that I "should" have had a kite out and was wondering what diversions you all have that battle for your valuable time? I'm bad for RC but the wheeled variety is new to my world. My low wind exploit was always RC planes & helis - kiting being a natural compliment but the trucks kinda compete. Moreover, I've got a neglected sport bike in the garage that doesn't get nearly enough love and a handful of woodworking projects sitting unfinished.

.....oh, and a wife that demands "quality time" :singing:

NPWfever - 11-9-2008 at 09:14 PM

Building is a huge distraction/money eater for me. Paragliding as well......photography.....and I'm looking at making an RC paraglider right now out of my 2m Junkie. Any ideas on that macboy?

dylanj423 - 11-9-2008 at 09:37 PM

Golfing does it for me... except every time I go out, it seems the wind is blowing. Then its kinda hard to focus.

I'd love to hear news about that RC paraglider.

NPWfever - 11-9-2008 at 09:40 PM

It should be alot of fun to make, and fly, would be great fun to fly from a tandem glider, as a passenger, off your wingtip. In all actuality though, I would say kiting is a diversion from paragliding :D

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE to kite, but god, the feeling of free flight is just.....unbeatable!

ohhhhh boy do i have too many hobbies my friend. I have a skateboard that i haven't used in years which I really enjoy using, a longboard which i use every so often, I did have a snowboard (which i used every year) up until last year((it got stolen :( )), I've got a mountain bike i like to ride, PC gaming is another hobby that takes a lot of my hobby time. Im also an avid camper i go camping every chance i get :P. I also have rock climbing gear which i have yet to use for a second time, oh and a set of golf clubs i LOVE TO GOLF!.... As you can see my wife was a bit weary of me getting into "yet another hobby" (powerkiting). I'll tell you what, it's definitely the hobby to end all hobbies!!!!:P

ripsessionkites - 12-9-2008 at 01:24 AM

Our wives should talk. I hear the same words. That's what I heard when the lure of kiteboarding got me into power kiting and the buggy. I have a road bicycle, a mtn. bike, ski boat (former top passion) with specialties in slalom and barefoot, can't wakeboard anymore due to the landings bothering discs in my neck, camper, roller blades, disc golf, rappelling gear, tennis and raquetball raquets, skeet shooting, snow skis and we like to hike as well. Throw in the pool we pay mandatory neighborhood dues for and tournament baseball and we could stay busy with hobbies if there were no jobs at all. Now I'm constantly wanting the buggy (got it) and "just one more kite".

hahaha dang man, i think you've got me beat!! :P . Yeah, that's great stuff :D. Disc golf, not a lot of people play that! That's cool man :) I started to get into it, I bought one disc and didn't go any further with it. Haha! Looks like fun though :) .

WadoGal - 12-9-2008 at 08:17 AM

For whatever reason, this topic has inspired me to make my first post.
Aside from kiting the rest of my time free is taken up by karate (wado kai - hence WadoGal:karate:), dodgeball, snowboarding, mountain biking, kayaking, camping, hiking, Guitar Hero, painting miniatures (Warhammer Wood Elves - I'm know I'm a nerd...) and subbing in for the various staff teams at the Edmonton Sport and Social Club usually volleyball or ultimate frisbee. Most of these activities I do with my boyfriend so I still get a lot a quality time with him! I even get to kite with him - he's not too fond of landboarding though. If I could get him into a buggy perhaps....

lunchbox - 12-9-2008 at 08:41 AM

Surfing, SUP, going to the gym, mountain biking and spending time with the family...

archkiter - 12-9-2008 at 08:53 AM

road biking, photography, ceramics (most of my free time last winter was spent behind a wheel at school and now I have one on loan to me to use a home- whoo-hoo ) , and tinkering with tools in the garage.

Bladerunner - 12-9-2008 at 11:39 AM

I smoke a lot :duh:

macboy - 12-9-2008 at 01:45 PM

....wait a second. WadoGal....did you say Edmonton Sport & Social Club? Could it be? Have we flushed another one out in Edmonton?!

WadoGal - 12-9-2008 at 03:04 PM

Yep, well Spruce Grove to be precise. I'm just starting the snowkiting thing this year, so I hope to be out at Cooking Lake a few times, otherwise I do most of my kiting at the local fields in Spruce. And if my deductive reasoning is correct, I believe that your neighbor has sent me pictures of your AccessXC.

macboy - 12-9-2008 at 03:24 PM

What a small world. Glad to finally "meet" you. We'll see you out at Cooking Lake for sure! I'm resolving to push my limits on the snow this year so look for the guy being dragged around by the chickenloop ; )

USA_Eli_A - 12-9-2008 at 03:33 PM

paragliding, surfing, biking, hiking, hot springing...

oooh, and I got nunchuck skillz

diversions, I'd say distraction from kiting...:moon:

Chefmini - 12-9-2008 at 05:40 PM

Kayak fishing, Mountain biking, photography, Flyfishing. Crap, too many expensive hobbies.l:spin:

Well, for me. Work...and school. Well, by work I mean the internet. I work as a web developer. I love it, and will find myself working way way to much, because I enjoy it to much.

But also, Philly distracts me. Concerts twice a week, a conference every other weekend, something awesome happening every weekend, countless of parties to attend, and people to meet. I love the city life...but its no doubt distracting!

And school. Organizing the Ski and Snowboard club...a lot of work. (deciding how to work snowkiting into our trips...) Its the biggest club in the biggest high school in the area, and I've got to manage it...well, the web site that manges it I should say. Not to mention the hardest year of my life, and applying to college...its a lot of work.

Hopefully it will all clear up and slow down come winter, allowing me time to snowkite...and take my 18th birthday road trip to Canada, for snowkiting, and other obvious reasons. :D

You get to Edmonton Barnes and the BEER'S on me! We'll make sure you forget you turned 18!

zztopfugate - 14-9-2008 at 10:12 PM

sailplanes, RC sailboats golf building cedar stripcanoes and kayaks running bulldozer [and welding on it ] rc helicopters am no good at any of these still searching.........

NPWfever - 15-9-2008 at 05:25 AM

OOH! Sailplanes! I just got a bunch of RC stuff to make an RC paraglider, and it wound up in a sailplane.....lol. Oh well, another trip down, another $50 and I'll have both. I was always REALLY afraid of RC, and like, IT"S SOOOOOOO EASY!!!! They're hard to fly, but easy to build.

Don't give me temptations like that or I just may drive all 3,000 miles up there!

But really, I was thinking Montreal / Quebec as that is a reasonable 10-12 hours up north...and any local PKFs want to meet up around December 29th to snowkite and celebrate my B-Day!

macboy - 16-9-2008 at 01:04 PM

Rumor has it that there's a bit of a community in Ottawa too, an hour or so from Montreal I think. That's where our funny guy Rick Mercer did it if I'm not mistaken. Actually it was probably Gatineau - which is across the river from Ottawa. The clip (www.cbc.ca/mercerreport/backissues.php) shows quite a few kiters out.

kiteon - 16-9-2008 at 01:20 PM

paragliding, bmx, fishing, camping, skateboard, all seems to get in the way of what realy matters (kiting) as long as ther is no wind

Bladerunner - 16-9-2008 at 08:05 PM

Barnes,

Get a hold of Buzz ! He is a great guy ! He will set you up with all the info on the Uber active " Paraski " scene in Quebec ! They are literally a generation ahead of the rest of North America in snowkiting. Just check out Conceptair's history so see what I mean !
I'm off to visit Quebec City in 2 days !!! It is their 400th anniversery :singing:
I'm pretty sure the drinking age in Quebec is 18. I actualll thought THAT was what you called obvious :ninja:

While you are way up North, trip on over to Vansterdam ! :wink2:

dan - 16-9-2008 at 09:44 PM

Wow..now here's a great thread. I am just getting into power kiting now....have several stunt kites that my kids now fly for the most part. I fly a powered parachute when I want to really "fly" under canopy. I own a 2.5r TMAXX Rc truck that fully tricked out, with a Picco engine, Fantom tuned pipe, and can really scream. I coach Youth Tackle Football grades 3 and 4..since I played in HS and college, I love coaching now. and my wife and kids..and that pretty much eats up all my time.

Dan

KYTE SLINGER - 17-9-2008 at 06:39 PM

besides other kiting activity like stunt, quads, indoor slks, demo flying yada-yada I build long gun mostly AR15s due to the people's republic of kaliforina gun restrictions and other long guns for the little woman thats a dang good shooter in the woman's class and out does some in the men's, my son shoots as well, 300+ yard's tack drivers so most extra time is reloading shells and keeping them clean ... my family and I will spend one weekend day at the range for target practice maybe a 1/2 day then hit the beach

Oh! and I took up sewing last year so I been stitching up some custom kites and banners.... that I'll do more of when the rain season starts up

NPWfever - 17-9-2008 at 08:36 PM

I'm really surprised how many people on here fly paragliders, or powered paragliders. Probably because they bear a resemblance to kites, they catch our attention....

Same goes for the paraglidng forum, alot of them fly kites.

McDuck - 22-9-2008 at 03:09 PM

I generally like to go go fast and catch some air therefore: snowboarding, wakeboarding, skateboarding, Landboarding w/ my Ace 6m.

I also like to speed cube which is about the nerdiest thing you can do but I love the challenge. If you know what that is deduct two cool points. =)

My wife is the exact opposite, she likes crafty activities but I must say, since she got into blogging her photoshop skills have exceeded my own!

WELDNGOD - 6-2-2009 at 05:00 PM

I got a new one, Airsoft! Damn, I love guns! especially ones you can shoot each other with. And I can tell it's addictive ,because I want ALL the guns. :ninja:

kitedog - 6-2-2009 at 05:39 PM

I've been getting a pretty good board rush on the Wii balance board and Shaun White's Road Trip. I'm just getting the hang of it. Very challenging. I'd like to be able to hook my own board up to this thing. How cool would that be!?!

WolfWolfee - 6-2-2009 at 06:39 PM

Lets see, I work, I kite, I work and I kite. Is there really anything else?

PHREERIDER - 6-2-2009 at 06:59 PM

WOOOHH, That thing is one of the badest toys on earth. Saw that vid going around the net.

Been though my share of diversions/hobbies...
Kiting is the recent addiction.
Kitewingn' the past 5 winters when there is ice/snow.
A few RC trucks, 2 E-Rustler vxl's and a Baja 5B
Hockey and rollerblading.
Race supermoto (KTM450SMR) and minimoto (KX65 and CR85)on the local kart tracks
Retired from roadracing a TZ250 6-7 years ago after a few good crashes. Helmets and leathers work but bones break.
Still have a sportbike but only find time to get out 3-4 times a year.
The '96 Van Diemen formula car waiting for a ZX-10r motor swap to run FB/F1000 in SCCA.
Enduro racing a KTM 250 and trail riding with the kids. Restoring a '74 Bultaco 250 Astro flat tracker and finished an '84 RZ350 KR street bike.
Sea kayaking, Mt. biking, and a few stalled solar/wind/ micro hydro/ e-bike/alternative energy projects in the garage.

Add in a wife, a few kids, and a tile and stone business.

Life is short....do it all.

PHREERIDER - 7-2-2009 at 04:00 PM

YOU HAVE TO LOVE THE SAW!

love karting, motoX...... i knew when to stop

last of the car porjects TR 7 with 350 4 bolt with a turbo 350 trans and tidy 10bolt rear
nice little conversion kit i came up with out of an old hipper ripper
total sleeper and AC (gotta have it in the south)

had a small herd of TR 6 done with it now

BTW just came off Phantom 15 from my man CARLTB

fast and powerful....... mad flow on the jumps (turns slow) but sick juice power

thank you carl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kitedog - 7-2-2009 at 07:31 PM

I see that a lot of you guys have been or are into rc cars and such. Check out this low wind day of fun for me, my rc truck and my Jack Russell.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLmqVzNzueQ

Oh yeah...that's where I practice when the wind allows.

I can't get that hotlink to work. The address is right, just and paste if you're interested.

WELDNGOD - 7-2-2009 at 08:28 PM

:o I WANT ONE, MUST HAVE ONE, COULD BUILD ONE.... HMMMMM..

kitepool - 7-2-2009 at 10:13 PM

I make sure i can kite in any climate.
at sea at land on snow on pavement U name it!
But Man can't live on wind alone.

for the Wii I like Mario Cart

for outdoors I got a boat
a little speedboat 90 hp evinrude
eighteen footer with barely enough room for 4 adults
its good for reaching remote light-wind local NJ kitespots
and when the wind really fails we are always ready to
wake-board our Kite-boards with a Tow-Rope

in the winter though I'll take my skis n snowboard to some local slopes
for some downhill action.

johnnylaing - 8-2-2009 at 12:01 AM

Windsurf...alot! Have gear for 5 or 6 to the 44 we measured for Fay last year...
landsail on an Earthboard w/ windsurf rig
light air wavesail on the outer sandbars using SUP w/ 7.5 Ezzy windsurf rig...it goes off when you know the tides...
SUP in surf and marsh and blackwater
Looking forward to kitesurfing!!! Flying with the bug has been a beautiful thing and I haven't even got started good...
Also...bodyboard, billiards, pocket pool, bumper pool, golf, disc golf, frisbee

I seem drawn to the flow side of things...esp. when it makes you grin.

speleopower - 8-2-2009 at 08:11 PM

It seems like a lot of folks are into RC airplanes as well as kites. Let's see some pictures of your projects! No ARF's 'cause thay ain't real projects: ya'll know what I mean.

Oh, I also have done a lot of miniature painting for Warhammer and the likes. I also dig Legos and slot cars. Oh, jetskis are awesome as well.

Here is my blog on RCgroups.com with a bunch of pictures.

PHREERIDER - 9-2-2009 at 02:29 PM

i have scratch built a stack of sticks, ugly sticks simple not scale but love to fly, so build was necessary but i did not like too much time in a build.

my fav was /is a diablo 60/ super tiger ringed 60 it's a semi arf really tough just right for my interest level in building and totally on for flying.

WELDNGOD - 9-2-2009 at 04:31 PM

hey speleo, I still got all my group 12 outlaw and x-15 motors and cars, super hot magnets, tools, and my imported Di Falco controller w/ huge multi-tap power resistor and adjustable brakes. But there is nowhere to race around here any more. I got into slot cars like I got into kites, full steam ahead into it .

speleopower - 9-2-2009 at 05:59 PM

Lets see some pictures!

Would like to see the slot cars. I only have a simple Carerra track with the cars that came with the set.

geojones - 18-2-2009 at 01:57 PM

diversions?--fishing,camping,chess,painting and powerlifting, but the biggie for me is music......ive been playing guitar mainly but really anything i can make music on--drums,piano ,bass guitar,synth,sequencer.......i only play when the urge comes up which fortunately is often.......i could NEVER EVER give that up!!!! for me ,making music has always been, and will continue to be almost larger than life....and so the joy that comes with it.....but i DO have to say that for sheer ADRENALINE and TERROR--nothing beats flying a power kite:wee::wee::spin:

dylanj423 - 18-2-2009 at 03:16 PM

I just started getting into jewelry making... made a bead necklace for my girlfriend on V-Day, and a bracelet.

Not tapped into it yet, but I will be following up as soon as I get situated after my move.

Super easy and zen inducing
