JIBE ho! 2009 Jekyll Island Buggy Expo

acampbell - 11-10-2008 at 08:31 AM

We are all set with dates for the 2nd Annual 2009 JIBE (Jekyll Island Buggy Expo). Mark you calendars now for Thursday May 7 through Saturday May 9.

For 2009 we are moving the event from September to May for the following reasons...

>No more Russian Roulette with tropical storms
>Better chance of consistent prevailing easterlies
>Still comfortable weather prior to summer extreme heat
>Early enough to to minimize beach "crowds" (Jekyll is never crowded anyway)
>Less conflict with other kite events (Wildwood, AKA)
>We couldn't wait a whole year to do this again!

We have also decided to start on a Thursday so that we have two weekdays with fewer other people on the beach. Jekyll beach is never crowded anyway and this is still pre-season, so we will have a better shot at extended distance runs. Sunday is reserved as a travel day.

Registraion will be posted in early 2009.

Well I'm ready again. I can't imagine how much more fun it would be with even fewer beachgoers, direct onshore winds, and those fantastic JI beaches.

tridude - 11-10-2008 at 05:08 PM

the southeasties are def the best BB. Chad and I could actually do a down winder back to our houses.................................:D

BeamerBob - 11-10-2008 at 06:01 PM

Someday I'll get a park and ride for miles. Haven't had that in the bug yet. I have several beach trips through winter and spring, so maybe I'll score one eventually.

kitedog - 11-10-2008 at 06:30 PM

Great news Angus! I had a great couple days last May in Jekyll with some minus tides.

Speaking of tides...the middle of November is showing some minus tides. Anyone game?

Greg

PHREERIDER - 12-10-2008 at 02:13 PM

i'm down for it. start a thread with a date if you can firm it up.

acampbell - 12-10-2008 at 03:49 PM

The dates are there in my post but I just realized that I forgot the link to the event page!

http://www.coastalwindsports.com/JIBE2009.html

PHREERIDER - 12-10-2008 at 05:11 PM

agus, that was for kitedog RE: low tide run in november, he mentioned a novemeber run on jekyll and should start a thread for it if he has specofic dates.

this would be a hi jack redirect.

BeamerBob - 13-10-2008 at 06:22 AM

When does this Meet/Festival/Expo warrant its own dedicated event forum. We are getting more and more users in the local (within 3-400 miles) area that are on the forum and wouldn't miss an event like this unless something serious was in their way. Add to them the buggiers in Louisiana, Texas Oklahoma and further that with some warning, will go anywhere there is a kite meet up and you have a big East Coast buggy event that gains popularity every year with the perfect conditions at Jekyll Island.

lunchbox - 13-10-2008 at 08:25 AM

Oh man...I gotta go to this...been drooling over JI since I first read about Angus 4-8 mile runs!

Well it is my b-day in April, maybe I can start hinting to the wife right now and set up a little JI 'trust' account for myself.

kitemaker4 - 13-10-2008 at 08:47 AM

Not sure if any of the Texas/Louisiana folks will make the event. We have or own in Galveston. We celebrate Cinco de Mayo (May 5) and have been doing so for several years now.

I bet your buggy would come apart and fit in a golf travel bag.

Hmm, yeah I overlooked that. I was trying to stay far enough away from NABX and not get too near Memorial Day Weekend as well as get low tides in the afternoon. How long does the Cinco de Mayo run?

tridude - 13-10-2008 at 10:13 AM

LB,

Check air fairs in to and out of Myrtle Beach and Jacksonville. Charleston is very expensive. If you get a good fair into Myrtle, Ill come pick you up and we'll head down to Jekyll. This means you have a place to stay and wont need a rental.....your call of course...........................

Texas/Louisiana will still be crying over losses to Georgia and Ole Miss so anytime in May will be fine..Im a Gator hator but thoroughly enjoyed that 51-21 thumping. Did anyone tell Less Miles the game started at 8pm?

Very, very cool...Thanks for the offer Tridude...I just might take you up on it!

I'll probably end up getting a rental car...never been to the Southeast so I'd love to do some sightseeing...but if the conditions are really good...that might have to take a back seat.

BTW, I'm going to try packing my board in my suitcase but I'm hoping there will be an extra buggy laying around (I'll pay a rental fee of course) ;)

It's a PL folding buggy...I've never broken it all the way down but that might work...don't all airlines charge extra now for golf bags?

Sorry for being away for a little bit . I have been realy busy at work. But put me down for this one again. JI is my favorite beach I love it

acampbell - 5-1-2009 at 11:08 AM

I am pleased to report that the Registration for JIBE 2009 is up and available here...
http://www.coastalwindsports.com/servlet/the-JIBE-Registrati...

Complete info is available here...
http://www.coastalwindsports.com/JIBE2009.html

It's the same weekend as Mother's Day, but the event ends Saturday leaving Sunday for travel and visiting.

We got some great press coverage from the Jekyll Island Authority in their "Beachscapes" newspaper...
http://tinyurl.com/8ya5h7
Several PKF members in there, including Bobby, Kullas and Phreerider. See page 5
The Newspaper is handed out to every visitor to Jekyll and has a large mailing base.

BeamerBob - 5-1-2009 at 11:18 AM

I know I HAD to be the first to sign up. :bouncing: I signed up both Wexler and myself. Next is to make hotel reservations. Guys, this is SO much fun being on the beach with lots of other like minded enthusiasts. We wouldn't miss it for anything.

acampbell - 5-1-2009 at 11:39 AM

That didn't take long.

One more thing: We have public clinics scheduled for Friday and Saturday afternnon- the idea is to put some trainers up for people to try. I could use some volunteers to take an hour or two to help preach the gospel according to Ripstop.

We will be getting a lot of publicity at the local Fedral Law Enforcement Training Center (a huge facility down here) and a lot of the folks there are the 'xtreme" type that will dig this. A lot of other press coverage is planned, too.

Let me know if you are interested.

BeamerBob - 5-1-2009 at 12:15 PM

I can help out with that. It's good to give back to the sport.

Taper123 - 5-1-2009 at 04:54 PM

Cinco de Mayo will be held the weekend before.

NABX conflicts with my work schedule... Was planning a buggy trip either late March or early May. So if we don't head to La Pesca or Tamiahua, we'll head that way.

MadKiteBoy - 5-1-2009 at 05:04 PM

WOO HOO:singing:
Definatley count me and my dad in... we will register soon ... i am looking forward to getting together with everybody again!

Bladerunner - 5-1-2009 at 05:47 PM

Last year I got my buggy to NABX in a ski bag . It is not the P.L. fold up but an early generation Flexi. The tires came in my suitcase.
Most airlines accept ski bags ?

[It's a PL folding buggy...I've never broken it all the way down but that might work...don't all airlines charge extra now for golf bags?

acampbell - 6-1-2009 at 06:58 AM

I booked NABX with Continental and there was no specific charge for what I described as an "oversized Golf Bag" (Mystic Gear Bag, 43x35x150 cm). Fees are $15 for the first bag and $25 for the second bag., if combined weight is under 50 lbs. If combined wieght of both bags is over 50 lbs then there is a $50 aditional charge, and $100 if over 70 lbs. Max size for any bag is 292 cm combined LxHxW. I'll pay the $100 since shipping it UPS will be slower and almost as much, and cheap hotels at NABX keeps overall cost low.

Likewise at JIBE, hotels are not expensive, so even with baggage charges if you have to fly here, it can be affordable. Micro-Suite Motels on the mainland (15 min, from the beach) ar $50 a night and beachside motels on Jekyll Isalnd can be had for $90.

Book to Jacksonville, FL (JAX) which is served by most major airlines and is only 55 min. from the beach. A little over an hour from Savannah airport if that works for you.

BeamerBob - 6-1-2009 at 07:43 AM

I stayed at the Microtel out by the interstate last time and was very impressed with the neat and clean atmosphere and especially that it was only $60 a night. An in-room Jacuzzi would be nice but I work out my tensions out on the beach.

speleopower - 12-1-2009 at 07:38 PM

I'm hoping my friend and I can make this event.

Scott

acampbell - 12-1-2009 at 09:09 PM

Just a few hours up I-95 for you. Hope you guys can make it. You will be most welcome.

pokitetrash - 28-1-2009 at 03:41 PM

Yo, I'm in for sure! Looking forward to seeing you guys from last year and meeting new Buds. This year I should be well kited-up for all wind conditions. My wife will provide the ever present chin music about me taking the "family" on a trip where they'll sit and watch me buggy, but like always I'll tell her "Hey! Be thankfull for an all-expenses paid beach vacation! Now get back in the kitchen and bake me a pie!!"

Fthwaaap! aaackaaaaaack-Uuungh!!

Sorry, my beautiful wife was reading this over my shoulder. I didn't know she was there.... Still going though, but probably without pie.

Taper123 - 29-1-2009 at 12:32 PM

Get a tandem buggy and tow her... adds a whole new meaning to dragging the old lady around. (just don't go through the water... :dunno: )

pokitetrash - 29-1-2009 at 08:31 PM

It might mess up her hair...

acampbell - 19-2-2009 at 01:20 PM

I have just added a new JIBE Registration category called "Beach-only, no dinner" for those who cannot make dinner Friday night. The cost is only $15 and includes registration for one buggy or land board, T-shirt, water and Ice all for all days.

Remember all profits go to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.

I am delighted to see the expected attendance list grow. Between registrations received and those who have tossed their name in to be expected, we are tracking to easily double last year- and it is early yet. If you are planning to attend and want to sit on your cash 'til later, that's totally cool- just drop me an e-mail or U2U so I can plan logistics.

We are getting good local press coverage and I expect some curios locals to show up for our public demo clinics from 1-4 pm on Friday and Saturday. I'll be asking for volunteers to give just one hour on either day to help newbies with trainers. Help spread the Gospel according to Ripstop.

Updated event registration info...

acampbell - 9-4-2009 at 01:52 PM

I've shaken off all the playa dust from NABX (still some in the kites) and am turning toward JIBE about 4 weeks out.

The registered/ confirmed list exceeds last year's final count and a lot of the usual local suspects still have to check in, so it looks like a big field. We have visitors from NY, TX and possibly CA. A lot of new names!

If you want to register but don't want to pay until the event, that is OK- you can register on line and choose "check/ money order" for form of payment. I just need head counts for Dinner and Sea Turtle Center Tour.
See http://www.coastalwindsports.com/JIBE2009.html#3

Even if you have been to the Sea Turtle Center before, there are lots of new patients, new stories, and new science to learn about. That will be during high tide, Friday and/ or Saturday morning.

This year there will be raffles/ auctions (format TBA) for kites and cool stuff- once again all benefiting the Sea Turtle Center and reminding local government that traction kiters are cool people that support the community and environment.

BeamerBob - 9-4-2009 at 02:00 PM

I just got back from a beach trip and my sails are all pointing towards JIBE and those wonderful Jekyll Island sands now. There is nothing like a sky full of "our" kites.

vwbrian - 10-4-2009 at 05:29 AM

Is anyone planning on camping at this event. I am looking for a place to park overnight and just camp in the car for the night. (I will be working on a limited Budget) I may be able to make it Thursday and Friday. it is a 550 mile drive from where I will be. I am not sure about getting my buggy there but can bring some of my kites.

BeamerBob - 10-4-2009 at 05:59 AM

This one is too short for us to justify pulling the camper down there. We will be staying at one of the nice but inexpensive hotels at the interstate. The campground is conveniently located though.

acampbell - 10-4-2009 at 06:28 AM

I'm afraid there is no overnight parking on the island except for the campground, and you really need reservations there (and they may be booked already ). Call 1-866.658.3021 They have all the facilities you would need from showers, to laundry to WiFi.

If you really want to just park, I would suggest one of the truck stops at exit 29 off I-95. They are 12 miles from the Island. The Flying J has public showers, but I do not know how much they cost. Not elegant but clean, safe and practical.

Remember to budget $3 a day for parking on the Island. that gets you good public rest rooms, outdoor running water, drinking fountains and beach access. We will have lots of free ice, compliments of Blackbeard's Restaurant.

Hope to see you there

geojones - 12-4-2009 at 06:09 AM

"now get back in the kitchen and bake me a pie" LOL:smilegrin:

flyguy - 15-4-2009 at 02:14 PM

Cant wait to meet some of you guys, I have been "teaching" myself to buggy for about a year and a half- so am really excited to see how to do it right.
Scott
will be coming from the mountains of virginia (talk about gusty wind) see you soon:wee:

BeamerBob - 15-4-2009 at 03:24 PM

You will be in awe about what you learn from buggying around others. You will notice things people do to be courteous to you, and you will also learn from bad positions others put you in that don't realize what they are doing. Sometimes, someone just has to stop but in most cases if everyone works together everyone can just zip on by. In all cases, the downwind kite goes low and the upwind kite goes high. Don't stay and fly somewhere that has another flyer blocked. I'm sure I still make mistakes but if you do, try to recognize it and fix it asap. Bottom line is everyone is easy going and laid back and you won't get an earful from anyone. You might get some helpful hints like I have every event that are meant to help you do better. Ever the student.

levitation^Drew - 16-4-2009 at 12:27 AM

Finally got signed up. Got the time off from work. I can't wait for this one. I'll be there Thursday morning. Anybody got room for a roommate? I can pay cash or beer and food or a combination of the three. :spin:

BeamerBob - 16-4-2009 at 03:33 AM

I can help out Friday night. We can't make Thursday because of my work and Wexler's school but will arrive Friday morning and can make some room that night if you don't have arrangements.

EDIT: I have a roommate now.

acampbell - 30-4-2009 at 04:27 PM

OK Gang, one week to go and everything is getting dialed in. I have 24+ hard-coded registrants and a few more expected so I suspect we will be over 30, plus family and friends.

For those who are coming but have not registered, please give me a heads up so that I can plan for dinner Friday. We have a great dinner planned and Blackbeards Restaurant and the Jekyll Island Authority are bending way over backwards for us, so I do not want to deliver too many surprises.

Also we have the Sea Turtle Center Tour Saturday Morning at 11:00 am. Remember that it is not included in the registration and is an a' la carte item since we have those returning registrants who have been before. I still encourage returning guests to attend since there are always new stories, new cases and new science to learn about. I need to let them know about how many.

We will be having a raffle for everything from brand new kites to cool accessories and gear. Remember, all proceeds go to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to support their research and education. This helps to tell local government and the press that kite people are good people and care about the environment (and yes, safety)!

Special thanks to local kiters who have volunteered to chip in to help with public clinics and course marshaling / public safety. If anyone else wants to give a small amount of time to the public clinics on Friday and Saturday, let me know. If I have enough people, then nobody has to be away from the buggy for long. Help us preach the gospel according to ripstop.

vwbrian - 1-5-2009 at 01:06 AM

Hello Angus
I can not make it. I thought I would be able to but I have family commitments.
Have a great time all that attend.

Of course everything else in the kitemobile is up for grabs too.

acampbell - 2-5-2009 at 11:11 AM

Stuart, you have missed the chance for the award for longest distance traveled to the JIBE, but sure, we will put a shirt aside for you.
See you in July!

acampbell - 2-5-2009 at 11:22 AM

Hey Gang
Went to Blackbeard's Restaurant last night for extensive PTE (Product Testing and Evaluation). Met with the manger and planned the dinner. Menu will be...

Fried Seafood platter
Broiled Seafood platter
Rib-eye steak
Grilled Chicken
Veggie/ pasta
Kid's menu available if needed

We will have the whole bar to ourselves.

They have a new Happy Hour on Friday from 4pm on and they have opened up the big front deck that overlooks Kite Beach. They are thrilled that we will be filling the sky with rip-stop and putting on a show for the patrons.

pokitetrash - 2-5-2009 at 01:54 PM

Yo Fellas! Looking forward to meeting up with you all again at JIBE! I'll be down Friday, most of the day and Saturday. I'll have 2 buggies with me with the tandem tow hook if anyone wants to borrow it to give/get a ride or better yet to drag their complaining spouse or child thru the surf... I'll do that last part for free:evil:. See you then.

Chris

acampbell - 2-5-2009 at 02:21 PM

Chris that is great. Jekyll Island Authority will be out with video. You can take them for a ride but not in the surf. Likely other press too.

pokitetrash - 2-5-2009 at 02:37 PM

Oh, thanks for the pressure Angus! No anxiety there, just a couple laps with the people who can make us go away, but the "caught on video" pile up won't be on the news until 11, so I'll be on the way home by then...

BeamerBob - 4-5-2009 at 07:02 AM

Windmapper is showing 6-9 mph from the SW Friday and Saturday. I guess that will be overcome by the afternoon heating effect? If afternoon heating overrides the prevailing winds, what type wind speeds do we end up with?

acampbell - 4-5-2009 at 07:07 AM

Seabreaze patterns are predicted all week and they will most often prevail over local westerlies. Hard to predict velocity but stronger later in the day after the tide change.

acampbell - 4-5-2009 at 02:22 PM

Info packets/ PDF's have been e-mailed to all known registrants. If you are registered and did not get one, or if you are coming and registering on-site, e-mail me for a packet. angus "at" coastalwindsports.com Especially if you are a first-timer.

See you on the beach!

flyguy - 4-5-2009 at 07:28 PM

I have a challenge for anyone attending the JIBE- I have a montana II seven meter that I have never been able to get to fly right. The first time i flew it, I snagged a rock and put a tear in the back (was not flying right then)- sent it to some place in texas to be fixed (cant remember the place but was recommended by several on this forum). After getting it back tried flying several times with marginal luck at best- the challenge is make this kite fly and show me how. I will be there thursday and friday- have to be back in virginia on saturday- hope someone is up to the challenge........

joecat - 5-5-2009 at 06:38 PM

Hey Angus,,, how are you ? The bigfoot buggy you sold me is still kicking butt! The New Jersey Buggy Club is having our spring bash this weekend also. Friday Sat Sun, 8th 9th 10th. Hopefully our weather will improve alittle.. Of course we are in Wildwood NJ. We should stay in contact this coming weekend to share stories and photos maybe one of these years the two groups could meet somewhere halfway between here and there..... Anyway hope you guys have a great time and good weahter... if anyone wants to check out our website its www.njbuggyclub.com from there there is a link to our website for our bash....... talk to you later.

acampbell - 6-5-2009 at 04:30 AM

Hey Joe, good to hear from you and glad the buggy is still trucking- I ride a BF now, too. Strange how Don scheduled Wildwood for this weekend when I announced 7 months ago (top of this thread) that part of my motivation for moving JIBE to spring was to avoid conflict with Wildwood!

When I saw Don at NABX he seemed to think no one would come to JIBE from your region anyway, but we have several registrants from NY and the NE. So let's work together next year to avoid conflict and make both events stronger. Because of our huge tidal range here in the gut of the Georgia Bight, we are really dependent on tide tables to schedule the event. I don't think your guys are as dependent, are you?

Our weather is looking good. More easterly components are being added to the forecasts, and the sea-breeze is expected to be dominant in the afternoons. Good thing, because the temps have been in the low 90's. I am hopeful for some epic park-and-rides on late Thursday and Friday afternoon.

We will definitely trade pics, thanks!

leebrianh - 6-5-2009 at 04:55 AM

Hi Angus,

I agree with you on event day coordination to avoid conflict next time. I would love to visit Jekyll Island and buggy with you again. Such a beautiful place. Enjoyed camping there very much

Looks like we might have some showers on Saturday but Sunday is looking good. Should be fun either way

Hope you have beautiful weather and good wind for your event. Don't forget to share your story with us later along with some pictures

Unfortunately, Wildwood is just as dependant on tides. High tide is nearly unrideable. If the wind direction is straight onshore, you might be able to ride on a high tide, but you would probably run into a peer or two...

I'd love to get down there for JIBE sometime, it looks like a great place to ride. Unfortunately, travel is a big issue for me... Maybe next time. :)

joecat - 6-5-2009 at 10:44 AM

Hey Angus, there was some conversation about conflict with JIBE however to be honest with you I never really thought about the posibility of traveling down there but now that it is brought up I think it would be kind of cool and would diff think about it....When we were planning we had to consider tides very much as Ragden said and then our tourist season kicks in very soon so this was the best weekend to pull it off. So we aggreed to having it now... But as Brain said,, next year lets work something out so we and others could try out both... It would be a blast to have you and others come up here. Can you actually camp right on the beach there where you ride?

BeamerBob - 6-5-2009 at 11:26 AM

The campground at Jekyll is a short walk from the beach but a mile or two from the prime buggying beach now dubbed "Kite Beach" even by the local government. If you look at an aerial map, the campground is at the northern tip of the island and kite beach is less than a mile north of the entrance onto the island. I've only been to one campground (Fort Clinch State Park in Florida) that you could walk your buggy from camper to beach and they won't allow kite buggying on that beach. The quest continues.

acampbell - 6-5-2009 at 12:00 PM

The reason there is no camping on the beach is due to the sea turtles coming on shore to nest, and they are protected. Not even any flashlights after dark (upsets their navigation ). No overnight parking on the island except at homes and in the campground since they do not want night activity near the beach. The campground is set back in the woods across the street from the beach.

Blackbeards Restaurant is getting turtle-friendly lights for their outside deck (overlooking Kite Beach) so that they can open it at night.

The local Suspension bridge over the river has special dim lights that won't mess with the turtles.

This is a pretty good place to be a turtle.

LevitationDrew is on the scene and says the sand is hard (as always) with light breezes. I wish I was already there. Leave first thing in the am with Pokitetrash.

DonaldLL - 7-5-2009 at 01:12 PM

Did anybody ever stop to think that maybe the turtles were coming to check out the kites?

Man, I wish Wendy and I could be there but just can't make it.... it all happened so fast.

acampbell - 7-5-2009 at 05:16 PM

Epic Day.
Sea-breeze kicked in in afternoon and several made 3-4 mile runs.
Many more showed up late afternoon for action tomorrow.
Sea-breeze looks even stronger for tomorrow (Friday).
Rock on

silvereaglekiter - 7-5-2009 at 05:23 PM

I hate I am not able to make it this year but I am loving my new job, climbing towers for the state rocks.
Have fun down there.

johnnylaing - 8-5-2009 at 09:46 PM

It never happens that you get GREAT CONDITIONS in an event that needs wind...

Today was the exception! Lots made the 3-4 mile runs, more than a few flew for the first time...

Fun had by all! It's really cool to see others that you normally only "see" here.

BeamerBob - 9-5-2009 at 10:02 PM

I'll post more later but Friday was a day that I will remember for a long time. I put 40 miles on my buggy that day. The wind was about 45 degrees onshore. I started out on the 4.9 Reactor but was having to work it a little. Then came the 7m Blurr and it was fine on the upwind slogs but got somewhat treacherous when going fast (around 20-30 mph) and have a gust hit hard. After I had some miles under my belt and was familiar with the wind, I got out the Montana. This was the tool for me that day. I felt better having the built in safeties and when I was able to let it roll on down the beach or making the upwind haul up the beach, it was nice to have the "throttle" to modulate as the wind changed or my need for speed kicked in. I had a new personal best speed of 35.4 mph and what was funny was that it felt not quite as scary as 23 did the run before. I guess you get used to it. There is something liberating about having a mile and a half of beach before you can see the next person and another mile to the next one. I could just let the speed build because there wasn't any reason for the next several miles to need to slow down.

It could go without saying how cool it is to be around the growing familiar faces and to meet the new faces that go with familiar names but I have to say it was again great to be around so many that are passionate about kiting in all aspects.

And finally, Angus did a great job of organizing, and facilitating the whole event. Everything seemed well thought out and planned. He seemed amazed at the volume of us regulars that attended and also at the number of people that booked hotels in the area because this event was a target destination for them. This JIBE thing is going to keep growing as the word spreads about how much fun it is and what a great location Jekyll Island is for the kiters and their families.

pokitetrash - 10-5-2009 at 05:24 AM

Folks, I'll tell you what, being in the sport for only a little over year, I always wanted that elusive "park and ride". I was absolutely sure I would drink a beer with Big Foot before getting a long distance run. every time I trekked to a beach there was bad winds, no beach or both. Then there was was JIBE 09! Friday--WOW! 3 and 4 more mile runs was the typical run that day as others have already said but what topped it off was I didn't need to eat much lunch because on my first park and ride run to the water tower and back I know I ate 3 or 4 bugs that zoomed right down my throat (no B.S., REALLY!!!!) because I had my head thrown back, mouth open laughing ang grinning like an idiot the whole way. After about the fourth bug, and I calmed down a bit, I learned to clentch my teeth better. Lips still wide open so I just strained a couple more bugs and globs of mud thru the gaps in my teeth (also no BS!). All the people were great to meet again and many for the first time and I bought a Flexi Blurr 5m from Angus that I used all day and really beefed up my confidence with that smooth power. I can't wait to go back to Jekyll, looking at my calendar now!

Look for an invite to Aiken Sc, "OOBE Field" soon. Huge polo field that Beamer Bob and I fly regularly. We have to work around polo schedule. Dumb sport! Why don't they just fly kites!?

Hope to see you folks soon!

Chris

Come on People !

We are looking for a full report here !

acampbell - 10-5-2009 at 04:32 PM

It's Mothers' Day here in the States and a lot of wives are getting a kite-free day.

I have not cracked the paperwork open to count, but we had well over 30 attendees and our own little Buggytown was crawling with attendees, family friends and curious public.

Weather could not have been much better as the sea-breeze ruled on Thursday and Friday on the relatively vacant beaches and many riders had their first park-and-rides and many personal best speed were set.

Besides a few skin samples left on the beach and a strained shoulder muscle, no real injuries.

I want to thank all who came out to make this a great weekend. Special thanks to local help from Johnny, Bobby, Chris Dover and Chris Rieke and Peter Boyton for the daily set-up and tear-down.

Pics and more info to follow. The wife is coming, gotta go

PHREERIDER - 11-5-2009 at 05:17 AM

Here are some photos from Saturday that were taken as we were mostly milling about...They do show the main area of Kite Beach, but do not show the 4 miles to the end of beautiful, desolate Jekyll...Unfortunately, the best riding was not documented by this rider! Anyone have shots from Thursday or Friday? I have those images in my head, drag racing for miles, trying to catch Elijah!

mgatc - 11-5-2009 at 06:20 PM

JIBE pics. First time linking to my gallery - hope it works.
Check out how much room there is on the beach! There is one photo looking down the beach with quite a few kites visible in the distance. This was on Friday with the onshore which allowed the epic 3 to 4 mile runs.

mel great series!

JOSH hitiin' the board like mad, nice

mgatc - 11-5-2009 at 07:52 PM

I tried all day to get air but the 11m wasn't quite enough for me. He hops on the board during the last 30 minutes and pulls off this stuff that he has never, ever, done before and makes it look easy! Ah, youth is wasted on the young.

Phree, next time we're out, you've got an IOU for me and the camera.

well powered kite breeds confidence.

the power is right there, trust your balance up and down with the power through the harness and the stoke makes you repeat it til gut aches.

posting a few in the gallery..wife & camera truly beautiful things

Scott
Thanks to you and Eric for coming down and helping to make the event a success.

acampbell - 15-5-2009 at 05:13 PM

Gang
Will be announcing JIBE 2010 dates soon. May 12-15 looks good, pending approval from Jekyll Island Authority. No spring tide, but still plenty of room in the afternoons.

PKF has agreed to establish permanent Official Event Forum for JIBE. Should be up soon. Special thanks to PKF.

We are considering a new model for 2010 with no registration fees. Just merchandise sales with expanded line of shirts, bags, hats (and yes, Chris R. you will get your license plate frames).

Also possibility of hired private security overnight so that people can dump buggies and stuff in parking lot overnight instead of packing into cars every night. Valet Parking comes to JIBE!!!

More info soon...

BeamerBob - 16-5-2009 at 05:12 AM

I"m very proud that JIBE has grown enough that it warrants its own event forum. I imagine that we could further increase attendance as the wide flat hard-sand beaches get more and more of a reputation and more of the locals come and people come from further away. There aren't many places in the country especially on the East Coast where you have 2 1/2 miles of desolate beach along with another 1 1/2 miles with the occasional beachgoer where you can let it roll fully lit.

tridude - 17-5-2009 at 06:52 AM

an awesome event no doubt........................amazing venue for sure. With the new job and long hours tweeking things I couldnt make it....................
