After leaving a company that supplied steel arch supports for mining, I went to work for a short time in a foundry....at this stage of my career my
back was shot, and so I wore a weight training belt everyday for work, as there was a lot of heavy lifting involved, at the start of each shift, I
would breath in and do my belt up....one of the lads said ehh he looks like popeye after eating his can of spinnage....after a while the management
realised I was a qualified welder...derrrrrrrrrrr, that was on my CV....anyway, I started getting all the repair work to do to keep the machinery
running, and all the welding jobs that needed doing....the lads then called me Popeyethewelder, everyone had silly names there, is was quite funny,
there was also Jonnypigface Picker, Ray Ticklemtyler, John the Baptist etc etc. I liked my name as among all the foundry workers, I felt as at least
everyone knew I was a welder....I have always been proud of that....
I have had other jobs along the way too, I had my own Pub/bar for a few of years, was a fitter/lathe turner for 8 years....as said earlier worked in
the mining industry for 9 years, but the last 10 years, I have been a structural plater/welder....
I am a plater/welder by trade, and any plater would hate to be called a welder, its an insult to them, but thats never bothered me...unless you are in
the trade most people dont know what a plater is, and so if I had been called popeyetheplater....most folk would I thought I had something to do with
crockery lol....no I like popeyethewelder, and tbh, its the only nickname I have ever had, and is only used in the kiting fraternity....
I like to think of my job title as an International Fusion Engineer:singing:
I am just Carl to everyone else.
