Drones and buggying

Thinking of getting a Parrot drone 2.0- you know, the Amazon package delivery deal!

Anyways, thought it would make a great tool to record a Buggy blasting down the Beach! I've always thought a 360 view as the buggy is cruising would make great video

anyone fly one of these?

http://ardrone2.parrot.com/ yea page not found.. But all you gotta do is copy paste into the browser.

I would LOVE to have one of those.. multipurpose. And I can see using one to video the buggies zipping up and down the beach.. flying in for close ups etc..!!!

Not many of the smaller less expensive models are able to be flown outside let alone in 15 to 20mph wind.
the blade 350 qx is able to fly in 15mph and film with a gopro.
One neat thing about the 350 qx is it has a safe mode that will send it back to where ot launched from when it looses its transmiter signal or the battery reaches a point of going dead. Only 2 models are able to do that, unless you build your own.

I have three multi rotors and use all of them to film ,first is the Blade QX 350 that Big kid mentioned ,I flies well but is a bit small for filming with the gopro and only gets 6-8 minutes of fly time with a camera on board. Second is my DJI F450 flame wheel which is bigger and handles the gopro well but needs some mods to mount the camera and is built a bit light so the pilot has to be very careful . number 3 is a fully loaded DJI phantom with a digital gimbal ,this one also has a FPV transmitter that uses the gopro for streaming video and broadcasts to my 7 inch black pearl monitor that I mount on a tripod , this works best as you can see what you are filming and can frame the shot perfectly. watch for some awesome kite buggy videos to come in the near future .

Dirtslide, cant wait to see some vids.
The hero 3 can do the wifi thing along with the adixxion. Working on a bracket of some sort to hold my tablet on the transmiter, only got 2 hands. Need one to operate the copter and the other to work the tablet, the PKD neck strap holds the transmiter infront of me. All I need now is one of those hard hats with 2 cans on the side with a straw connecting them together so I drink when I get thirsty.:D

Woot had the parrot for $169 yesterday- almost bit but thinking these are just starting to come out and I am sure in 6 months there will be huge tech advantages.

Figured filming will be a 2 person task- unless you are Bigkid who will look something like the geeks in "Sixteen Candles" with the Headsets on! Also you did not leave any hands or feet to fly the kite!:D

I use my feet to steer the buggy and I learned from dirtslide to fly with my teeth. I learned to tie a knot in the stem of a maraschino cherry some time ago.:P
I tell my grandkids all the time "Granpa can do everything and I know it all too". They laugh and tell me I'm wrong, "Grandma can do anything and knows everything, besides shes the Boss".

The price is reasonable.

My question, just how much wind can they handle and still hover?

Talking to a few who have them, I have to agree with them. The blade 350 qx will maintain a hover in safe (smart) mode in wind 15mph and less, full operation in safe mode under 12mph.
In stability mode and agility mode, one guy said 28mph was a hoot to play in.
I do the stability mode from time to time if I have the room, but agility mode is beyong my skills when filming. Without the camera, doing flips and mach 3 at the beach is more than my heart can handle.:o
The phantom will not handle as much wind as the blade in any mode. At least I wouldnt use the phantom in much wind. All the others are less able to operate in wind, so to say.
Now understand these will work in wind and might do very well. I had my wife and Levi walking down the beach in 12 to 16mph wind and used the blade as they were walking away from me while trying to film them as I would a kite and buggy going down the beach. I used the phantom the same way as they walked back.
The blade was easier to use and circled them in a gentler circle than the phantom. Both of the copters were flown in safe mode, they might be different with more impute from a more skilled operator.

I would guess if the quad copter cant fly in 10 to 20mph wind it wouldnt be any good for filming someone in a buggy. A 10m on long lines would be filmable in 0 to 8mph wind, but any depower or twinskin would need 10mph wind at the minimum to fly.
Guess we need to do some R and D, anyone up for a week of WORK at the beach?

Spent some time with the AR.Drone 2.0 Quadricopter Power Edition. Got to say it has surprised me. The biggest surprise is the ease of the tablt or smartphone used to opperate it. You can set the parameters before you launch, height, speed, along with a bunch of camera adjustments. Save the video or photos to your tablet/smartphone or usb card.
It has its own video program in the app that will send the footage strait to youtube or Picasso. I do like flying while watching the tablet to make sure of getting the shot I was working for, or making multiple attempts in the same shot. Shooting a moving target is not as easy as you can imagine, at least not yet.

Not sure of the speed aspect but will hold and hover very well in 12mph wind. Much more to come after getting back from Sunset this weekend.

I like the AR but do not like the "stickless" controls. There are mods that you can buy which include a new Transmitter but it then puts its price into the next grouping of Quadcopters.

I have looking at EVERY Quad/Drone out there and it can be difficult to find one that has the goodies you need. The Walkera Blade 350 is my 1st choice but these are so popular now they are getting overpriced for a "hobby".

Dirtslide- do I really need GPS, auto hover, follow me? I do like the return to home feature! The camera I am not concerned about, I will use a Mobius and make my own mount. Seem to be headed towards this unit:

The gps is a nice feature. Got to remember, and if you dont know, if the quad is on its way up and away from you and you loose contact with it due to a building, tree, dead transmiter battery, etc, the quad will continue on its way until its battery dies and it falls from the sky, miles away from any recovery.
The gps will allow it to return home just before the battery gives out. Good quad. :D Not easy to say byby to 300 to 900 bucks with or without a cheap camera.

The tablet/phone controller is a hair slow and not as precise as a real transmiter, but thats part of that particular setup. I hope to use the tablet and the ar drone this weekend on full mode setup and see how it works out.
Your right about your wants/needs not available in one setup, thats why my truck was custom built for me, by me, for my particular wants/needs.
You can always build your own and then rebuild it again cause it just isnt right.:D I like off the shelf buying for now till I know what I like or dont like and if the cost is worth it for the want.

One thing not talked about yet is the repair after the crash. I carry a few tubes of super glue, a small role of foil tape for quick repairs and 2 types of epoxy for overnight repairs.

The local hobby shop is much less expensive.
I fly this in the truck while sitting in the wonderful Seattle traffic jams, everybody else talk on the phone.
